Sunday Synth Jam: Synthesist and Synthtopia reader Jason Job sent word of his new ambient slash minimal techno synth jam:

I’m a daily reader and a big fan of your blog. I particularly love all the Sunday Synth Jam’s you post.

Free Music Friday: Synthesist Bakis Sirros sent word of DiNDDL10 Submission 01 – a 9-track synth-heavy net release:

i participate with my collab (with Steve Law) project, ‘Memory Geist’ in this compilation.

It’s track 9, and its full of Serge modular.

Submission 01 features one track (or in some cases an edit) from each of the first nine DiNDDL titles.

Artists featured on this compilation are Ian Boddy, Dub Atomica, Bernhard Wöstheinrich, Markus Reuter, ARC, Zero Ohms and Memory Geist. Six of the tracks are taken from concerts performed by a selection of these artists.

Free Music Friday – Vintage Music For The Buchla 100, By A 14 Year-Old Girl

Free Music Friday:  My name is Marietta Cashman is the name of a long-lost collection of works created on the Buchla 100 by Hanna M.G. Shapero between 1968-69.

Shapero explains:

From 1967 through 1970 my father, composer Harold Shapero, was director of the Brandeis University electronic music studio. The studio was equipped with a Buchla 100 modular synthesizer, which was at the time the state of the art. Though I was not a Brandeis student, but still in high school, my father allowed and encouraged me to work with the Buchla in the studio. I started working there when I was 14 and continued until I was 17. The portrait you see of me with the Buchla was taken (by my father) in 1970.

I spent many hours over those years improvising various “patches” on the Buchla, recording electronic music onto quarter-inch magnetic tape, using the studio’s Ampex 351. Any modification of the sound was primitive at best; the Buchla was equipped with only a spring reverb. I would take the “raw” tapes home where I would edit them and physically splice them together into listenable sequences. I would usually edit copies of the originals, saving the original tapes unspliced for further use.

The sounds on this recording, unheard for 40 years, are a compilation of assorted electronic effects which were thrown together without much planning, rather as a storehouse than as a finished piece. They date from 1968 and 1969. The modern aesthetic of patchwork and accidental meaning, which was only at its beginning in 1968, has made this into “listenable” material. If you listen carefully, you can hear the splices.

Shapero has returned to making electronic music, after 40 years – but her debut release, My name is Marietta Cashman, is a unique sonic time capsule.

IDMf netlabel has just released my first album, Headcleaner.It’s a collection of experimental, ambient, glitchy melodic IDM, in the vein of Plaid, Autechre, etc.

Here’s what they have to say about the new album:

We are proud to report word of a new transmission received from the Quadslope Probe as it slides effortlessly through the abyss. This one comes from an unorganized thought void of time or light. The Probe and it’s sensors have been re-calibrated to listen only mode. These are the raw, unmixed, and unedited sounds that are captured in real time therein. Free Music Friday – Isotope Of Me’s ‘Heavy Heavy’

Free Music Friday: Synth addict Benjamin Cameron (Isotope of Me) recently reconfigured his modular synth setup, shown above, which also features Monome, Expert Sleepers software and Manta controller.

After getting some new additions to the system working, it was time to get his synth on – so he recorded a track and shared it.

Here’s what Cameron has to say about the track, Heavy Heavy:

The monome is running Stretta’s awesome plane sequencer, which is driving the modular along with the expert sleepers step LFO.

The manta was used to play the heavy lead lines which are the matrix 6-r and the DSI evolver. The matrix is doing a fine job of being aggressive without any external distortion here. For an 80s box, it certainly is flexible.

Of course, nasty is the evolver’s middle name, so no surprises about grit coming from that little box. The Telemark kicks in toward the end with some resonant sweeps, also feeling a little aggressive. Grr, argh.

Dean De Benedictis And Nyle Steiner Live In An Alpine Canyon

Sunday Synth Jam: This is a track from Dean De Benedictis’s project, Travels Rendered, that was aired on British radio program Sunday Synth.

The track/song is an improvised ambient piece that was performed and recorded live, in an alpine canyon near Provo, Utah, by Dean De Benedictis and Nyle Steiner (inventor of the EWI).

To create this piece, both men hiked up into the mountains with their gear, and then Steiner plugged his EWI and synth module into an audio card for Dean’s laptop studio (which runs Ableton Live and Reactor). Both men then preceded to improvise. The canyon was elevated in the mountains east of Provo, and it was a gray day.
