If you heard a deafening swallowing sound sometime in the past day or
so, we can explain its origin. The corporate makers of security software
must have collectively gulped when Microsoft announced its plans to
offer a free consumer security product.

Microsoft Announces Free PC Security Product

"Morro," as the product's called at the moment (probably named after
Morro Castle), is supposed to take care of a lot of stuff. Viruses,
spyware, rootkits, and Trojans are all on its kill list. It should
require little in the way of bandwidth and computing resources, too,
giving Microsoft an "in" with the growing netbook audience.

Some security stories relate to fairly harmless issues, but this one
might go well beyond "whoops." It seems that LIGNex1 and Hyundai Heavy
Industries, two Korean companies that construct things for the military,
have had malicious code planted within their computer systems.

Defense Companies Hit By Malicious Code

So you know the (potential) scale of the problem: LIGNex1 deals with
missiles, radar, and communications systems. Hyundai Heavy Industries is
the world's largest shipbuilder. And it was the National Security
Research Institute that found the malicious code. This sounds like the
start of some near-apocalypse novel by Tom Clancy, right?

As for who planted the code, how they did it, and what files were
affected, details are scarce right now. Chalk it up to government
secrecy or (and this is a slightly scarier possibility) true ignorance
at the same level.

A week and a half ago, Panda Security warned about the potential spread
of the Conficker worm, a virus spread via USB devices. Since then, Panda
has found that nearly six percent of scanned computers were infected,
spanning 83 countries.

Conficker Worm Called An Epidemic

Originating in China, Conficker worm infection seems concentrated in the
United States, Taiwan and Brazil. PandaLabs found 18,000 infected
computers in the US alone. Analyzing two million computers, 5.77
percent, or 115,000 were found to be carrying the Conficker worm.

In the time since the security company issued an "orange alert"
regarding the threat level of this malicious program, Panda says
variants have been identified that launch brute force attacks to extract
passwords from infected computers and internal networks. The company
says the frequency of "weak" passwords-common dictionary words, own
names-have aided the outbreak.

It's a tough line to swallow that Heartland Payment System's

Let's back up. Yesterday, while all eyes were on Washington, New Jersey

Visa and Mastercard alerted Heartland last week to suspicious
transactions stemming from what the company, after investigating, found
to be malicious software squatting on its network.

Conficker, also known as Downadup, Kido, and Conflicker, is a
particularly nasty and smart virus spreadable via popular USB
devices-you know, those little, tartish gadgets that flit from computer
to computer without a thought?

Turns out, in addition to installing itself, copying itself, adjusting
the Windows TCP/IP settings, and spreading itself to all
removable/network devices, Conficker also disables Windows cleanup and
detection services, deletes system restore points, blocks Internet
access to Microsoft.com and other security service sites, and waits
three hours before trying to download additional code from 250 different
domain names generated and set up daily.

Last year, companies worldwide lost about $1 trillion to intellectual
property theft and damage repair, an estimate McAfee calls conservative.
The company warns that a weakened worldwide economy will just increase
data theft in 2009. McAfee based that hefty number on a survey conducted
by Purdue University's Center for Information Assurance and Security.
Data from over 800 CIOs in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, China, India, and
Dubai were examined, especially in regard to the origination, storage,
transfer and loss of intellectual property (IP). Combined, companies in
the survey lost $4.6 billion worth of IP last year, and spent about $600
million patching up holes from data breaches.

When we first saw [Jeffrey Nelson]'s G1 based robot we immediately
wondered what the transport for the controls was. The G1's hardware
supports USB On-The-Go, but it's not implemented in Android yet. It
turns out he's actually sending commands by using DTMF tones through the
headphone adapter. The audio jack is connected to a DTMF decoder that
sends signals to the bot's Arduino. He wrote client/server code in Java
to issue commands to the robot. You can find that code plus a simple
schematic on his site. A video of the bot is embedded below.

to downgrade from RC30 and install BusyBox. All you need to do to put
Debian on your phone is download the package from [ghostwalker] and then
run the installer script. This isn't technically a port since Debian

had access to the entire Debian package tree? A video of Debian starting

Build a solar dehydrator

[Erik Knutzen] and [Kelly Coyne], authors of The Urban Homestead, are
really into all things green and sustainable. In their blog, Homegrown
Evolution, they discuss building their own solar dehydrator using plans
from the February/March 1997 issue of Home Power Magazine. The
dehydrator is designed by Appalachian State University's Appropriate
Technology Program. If interested, you can check out or buy other solar
dehydrator designs. This seems like a great, cheap alternative to buying
an expensive electric dehydrator, and you get some great advantages,
like low-cost dehydrating, solar energy, and beef jerky whenever you
want it. Plus, the authors point out, for most of these designs, if you
remove the top box and you stick it next to a window, you've got a solar
heater. It's now a dual-purpose device.

solar powered ice maker
Producing ice without electricity just got a lot easier thanks to these
engineering students from San Jose State University. Their system uses
solar heat to facilitate evaporation of a coolant. When the sun goes
down and the coolant turns back to liquid, its temperature drops
drastically due to extreme pressure differences. The unit can produce 14
pounds of ice per day with zero carbon footprint. It has no moving parts
and an entirely sealed system, this should mean that the only
maintenance necessary would be keeping the unit clean.

Cheap hack may double solar panel power
posted Jul 10th 2008 6:30pm by Benjamin Eckel
filed under: news, solar hacks

MIT researchers have devised something they call the Solar Concentrator
which is to be placed on top of existing solar cells. Its purpose is to
separate the visible and infrared spectra of light by absorbing the
visible spectrum and routing the energy to specialized cells. They claim
this could lead to doubling the panel's efficiency and greatly reducing
costs.

We have seen many promising advances to solar panel efficiency in the
past few years, but what is special about this one is the amazingly
simple and cheap technique. Essentially, all the team has done is coat a
piece of glass with simple organic dyes. After the organic molecules
absorb the visible light, they remit the energy to the sides of the
glass where it can be routed to their specific cells. The process is
more efficient because the dye absorbs the light rather than something
expensive like silicon. That means less silicon, and thus a better price
range. Also, the fact that this material is just a piece of glass also
opens up the possibility of solar windows.

code originally intended for hacked Xboxes would be shown on NBC's Today
Show? We've been promised internet connected set top boxes for years,
but it seems like Boxee is here to stay for two solid reasons: 1. It's
free. 2. Major content providers have finally figured out how to publish
online and Boxee supports them. You can replace your network television
with on demand content from Hulu, ABC, and the like.

One of the most affordable platforms currently supported by Boxee is the
Apple TV. Lifehacker has a guide for installing Boxee on an Apple TV.
You prepare a USB flash drive that is then used to patch the stock
firmware. Once installed you can take advantage fun features like

[Matthias] sent us this project where he builds an AVR light controller.
He had a halogen bike light laying around, but was unsatisfied with its
lead-acid battery. He wanted to use a lithium-polymer battery but found
that they can't be used directly with halogen lamps due to their
voltage. His produced 8.5 volts at full charge and can't be discharged
to below 5 volts. He new a power controller would be necessary to try to
flatten that out for his lamp, which needed to stay between 6-12 volts.

He used an ATtiny45 doing PWM to change the voltage. Some other cool
features he added were the high and low settings and an LED status light
for warnings. You can find pictures, schematics and source code on his

HDHacker backs up and restores Master Boot Records - Download Squad

HDHacker backs up and restores Master Boot Records

Windowsby Brad Linder Jan 30th 2009
HDHacker
The Master Boot Record (or MBR) of a hard drive contains the information
your computer needs in order to know how to boot any operating systems
installed on your system. In other words, if something happens to your
MBR or BootSector, you could be left with an unbootable computer.

HDHacker is a Windows utility that lets you backup or restore your boot
record in a snap. The standalone program can be run from your hard drive
or a USB flash drive. The one thing it does require is a working Windows
installation. So if you've accidentally locked yourself out of Windows,
you'll need to find a way back in before you can restore your MBR.

Fortunately if you have a Windows XP or Vista installation disc handy
you can probably boot into recovery mode and try to fix or rebuild your
MBR. But that's not to say HDHacker is useless. For example, if you have
a triple boot system running Windows XP, OpenSUSE Linux, and Ubuntu
Linux, one of the Linux distributions probably wrote over your MBR with
its own GRUB bootloader. If you try to uninstall Ubuntu and keep the
other operating systems you might wind up with an unbootable system. The
Windows XP installation disc can help you boot into Windows, but you
might find yourself without a way to boot into OpenSUSE unless you use a
program like HDHacker to restore the boot record.

At least that's one example off the top of my head. If you can think of
other uses for this program, let us know in the comments.

HowStuffWorks "How the G-Wiz Electric Car Works"

How the G-Wiz Electric Car Works

Sitting in front of your computer, you click "Buy Now." Making sure the
correct selection is in your online basket before you check out, you
notice the order total. For one item, the cost will be £9,194.00, about
$18,000 USD as of February 2008. But this unusually high price for
something purchased over the Internet doesn't faze you, because you're
not buying a really expensive book or getting ripped off by a
third-party seller on Amazon.com -- the product you're ordering is the
Reva G-Wiz Automatic Electric Vehicle, an emission-free electric
automobile made in India and available through UK retailer GoinGreen.

Ordering from an online showroom is just one of the company's tactics
that aim to cut costs and lessen the effect urban travelers have on the
environment. With smaller, more efficient cars like the Smart Car all
the rage in England, the G-Wiz has quickly become one of the UK's most
popular electric vehicles, with more than 900 models driving around the
streets of London [source: GoinGreen]. GoinGreen advertises the G-Wiz as
the greenest vehicle available for purchase in England -- its Web site
claims the G-Wiz's electric engine produces zero direct emissions, and a
full, eight-hour charge costs about $1 (50 pence), the equivalent of
nearly 600 miles per gallon. The vehicle is also exempt from London's
hefty new congestion charges, and drivers can park for free in certain
areas and make use of on-street charging points while away from the
G-Wiz....

G-Wiz Safety Concerns

One of the main concerns with compact cars is the safety of the vehicle.
The lighter weight of these vehicles makes them more susceptible to
damage in an accident, and automakers need to be creative if they want
to build a strong, protective body. The close quarters also put drivers
and passengers at an increased risk of being hurt by poorly designed
crumple zones or broken windshields.

The G-Wiz huddles among taxi cabs, delivery trucks and hulking
double-decker buses in London, England.
Scott Barbour/Getty Images
The G-Wiz huddles among taxi cabs, delivery trucks and hulking
double-decker buses in London, England.

The G-Wiz is very compact -- it's only about 8.5 feet long and 5 feet
tall -- and since it's classified as a quadricycle, it's not required to
undergo the same kinds of safety tests regular automobiles do.

So in 2004, Reva introduced the G-Wiz dc onto London streets, following
up in 2006 with the G-Wiz ac. No official crash tests were performed on
these vehicles, so consumers had no idea how someone would fare in a
collision. It wasn't until the summer of 2007 that UK car magazine Top
Gear performed its own series of crash tests with the G-Wiz. People were
finally able to see the destruction a wall -- or better yet, a simple
table -- could deliver to the popular electric vehicle.

The results of the crash tests, which you can view on the Jalopnik Web
site, are painful to watch. One video shows a G-Wiz driving into a wall
at 40 mph, while another shows two G-Wizzes, traveling at 30 mph,
hitting each other. In both, the front section of the G-Wiz gets
completely torn apart and crumpled in toward the driver and passenger
dummies. Another video, seen here on YouTube, puts the G-Wiz up against
a table, with simultaneously amusing and horrifying results....

HowStuffWorks "Did da Vinci really sketch a primitive version of the car?"

Did da Vinci really sketch a primitive version of the car?
The term Renaissance man is used to describe a person who seems to
know, and know how to do, nearly everything. He or she is skilled in
multiple disciplines, and, being well-educated, has a broad knowledge
of all sorts of subjects. When someone refers to another as a
Renaissance man, you know that person really has his or her stuff
together and would most likely be a great addition to your trivia team.
A polymath is another word used to describe such a person; the word
comes from Greek, meaning "having learned much."
Did Leonardo da Vinci, the quintessential Renaissance man, design an
early version of the car?
Hulton Archive/Getty Images
Did Leonardo da Vinci, the quintessential Renaissance man, design an
early version of the car?

The phrase Renaissance man comes from the period of the same name
between the 14th and 17th centuries, the Renaissance. This is the point
when historians agree civilization emerged from the Dark Ages and began
a new period of intellectual enlightenment. Scholars and artists during
these times took on all kinds of studies, including painting, sculpting,
science and mathematics, engineering
and philosophy.

Most consider Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), the Italian scientist,
inventor and artist, the ultimate Renaissance man, and you'll often see
him associated with the term. Leonardo was a master painter, and many of
his works are recognized worldwide, including the
"Mona Lisa," the "Last Supper," and his sketch of the "Vitruvian Man."
He was also a sculptor, an anatomy expert, an engineer and an architect,
and his seemingly endless amount of ideas and inventions were extremely
far ahead of their time. Most of his machines or gadgets were merely
proposed and remain sketches on paper, but Leonardo also predicted a
myriad of modern technologies, including the parachute, steam engine,
tank, helicopter, airplane
and submarine.

But did the one-of-a-kind genius have the foresight to dream up the
basic principle for the modern era's most influential mode of
transportation -- the car? If so, what did it look like, and how did it
work? Has anyone ever built a working model? Could this centuries old
design save you money on gas? To learn about one of Leonardo's many
quirky inventions, read on...

Upload time is minimized by only copying programs/modules which are not already contained in the SecCheck file repository ...this then enables us to perform centralized virus scans of these files and return the results to you.

When the submission is done, a new SubmissionStatus browser window will be opened. Note: Virus scanning can take 3-5 minutes to complete, so you may need to refresh the page a couple of times until results are populated.

The Spyware Warrior List of
Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites

Those who have followed the development of this page since 2004 will have noted that the list of "rogue/suspect" anti-spyware products has not been updated since May 2007. Unfortunately, other time commitments have precluded our efforts to keep that list up to date. Since the last update dozens of "new" rogue anti-spyware programs have hit the 'Net. The vast majority of them, however, are not really new, but are simply re-branded clones and knockoffs of the same rogue applications that have been around from years. In most cases, they are being pushed through the same deceptive practices by the same parties responsible for earlier versions. See in particular these "families" of anti-spyware products, which continue to live on through shameless re-branding: 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, & 23

If you are looking for information on the most recent rogue anti-spyware applications, we recommend visiting these sites:

Go to this page...

Trustworthy Anti-Spyware Products
Protecting your PC w/ quality anti-spyware applications...

When choosing anti-spyware protection, you should rely on products with deserved reputations and proven track records. That means avoiding the new and unknown, and not succumbing to impulse buys of anti-spyware products that you see on the Net, esp. those included in the "rogue/suspect" list on this page or advertised on Google

At the very least, you should have an anti-spyware scanner, and there are several reputable anti-spyware scanners available on the Net -- some even for free. But anti-spyware protection goes beyond having an anti-spyware scanner like Spybot Search & Destroy or Ad-aware. Even after installing and running an anti-spyware scanner, you should take steps to lock down your browser and protect your system against further infestation by spyware and adware.

What follows below is a set of recommended steps for installing anti-spyware protection for your PC. If your PC is already infested with spyware or adware, see the instructions for getting help included later on this page.

1.   Install an anti-spyware scanner (or two...)

One basic tool in every user's toolbox of software ought to be an anti-spyware scanner. There are several excellent anti-spyware scanners available -- some free, some for pay. These include (but are not limited to):

Note to Vendors: please do not email me and request to be added to the above list of "recommended" products. This list of "recommended" products is based on extensive experience with the listed products and is not a list to which one can apply for admission.

Disclaimer: the maintainers of Spyware Warrior have enjoyed consulting relationships with Sunbelt Software, makers of the CounterSpy anti-spyware application. Given that relationship and the inherent conflict of interest it represents, we refrain from recommending CounterSpy. Spyware Warrior has no financial relationship with any of the companies whose products are listed or recommended above. We are not employees, affiliates, representatives, or other agents of any of these companies.

In addition, there are other "freeware" scanners that you may find useful:

Type 2 Diabetes Diet and Nutrition Tips: Healthy Eating and Exercise -- Interview With Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD

Expert Q&A: A Healthy Diet for Type 2 Diabetes

An interview with Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD.
By R. Morgan Griffin

Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

Here's some good news: Healthy eating can have a dramatic impact on the symptoms and progression of type 2 diabetes and its frequent precursor, prediabetes. But the problem is that there's a lot of conflicting information out there. Just what does healthy eating with type 2 diabetes really mean? No sweets? Scheduled snacks? Low-fat, low-carb -- or neither?

To help guide you, WebMD turned to Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD, CDE. She's been a dietitian and diabetes educator for almost 30 years, and is the author of numerous books on the subject, including Diabetes Meal Planning Made Easy, published by the American Diabetes Association.

Re: 13 Great Free Backup Programs for Windows, Mac, and Linux - Download Squad

Well, not for sure... a couple sound familiar. But I read through them and I like BackupPc best for my purposes. Backing up to HD all my files, local and on networked computers. Here's their short description from their web site... http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/index.html

"BackupPC is a high-performance, enterprise-grade system for backing up Linux, WinXX and MacOSX PCs and laptops to a server's disk. BackupPC is highly configurable and easy to install and maintain."

I also saw an article today about another one that is free. It might be interesting...
http://www.techsupportalert.com/free-titan-backup.htm

The mains things to look for I think.. are how - where you want to store your backups.  Can you restore  single files?  and how good is the  compression. Zip Compression is good, but Tar can make smaller archive files sizes with the same amount of data. But with Vista, Can you work with Tar files? If the Backup program opens them and allows you to restore from them, that's good. But I like to use programs like Total Commander to look through Archive files to see what is in them and if I want to restore any of the files. I'm not sure if Total Commander works in Vista, but it does in 3.1 to WinXP...

TEMPEST: A Signal Problem
posted Jan 25th 2009 8:13pm by Eliot Phillips
filed under: security hacks, wireless hacks

tempest

TEMPEST is the covername used by the NSA and other agencies to talk
about emissions from computing machinery that can divulge what the
equipment is processing. We've covered a few projects in the past that
specifically intercept EM radiation. TEMPEST for Eliza can transmit via
AM using a CRT monitor, and just last Fall a group showed how to monitor
USB keyboards remotely. Through the Freedom of Information Act, an
interesting article from 1972 has been released. TEMPEST: A Signal
Problem (PDF) covers the early history of how this phenomenon was
discovered. Uncovered by Bell Labs in WWII, it affected a piece of
encryption gear they were supplying to the military. The plaintext could
be read over that air and also by monitoring spikes on the powerlines.
Their new, heavily shielded and line filtered version of the device was
rejected by the military who simply told commanders to monitor a 100
feet around their post to prevent eavesdropping. It's an interesting
read and also covers acoustic monitoring. This is just the US history of
TEMPEST though, but from the anecdotes it sounds like their enemies were
not just keeping pace but were also better informed.

Hands free point of view camera - Hack a Day

Hands free point of view camera

Here's an odd little footnote we found while perusing the Comic Tools
blog. [Matt Bernier]'s blog is dedicated to drawing and inking tutorials
for comic artists. He uses a lot of example photographs that involve
both hands. This week, at the bottom of his post on cleaning brushes, he
included a photo to illustrate how he takes all of these point of view
shots. The camera is strapped securely to his head using an old lanyard.
He can see the display and access the controls on the back. After
composing his shot, he just sets the timer, and you get a picture of
what the process looks like from his perspective. Sure, it looks silly
from this angle, but it really helps out the posts.

Sound effects box - Hack a Day

Sound effects box

At first glance, this may look like a retro styled monome, but it is
actually quite different. Merging a Project64 key pad and a Voice Shield
for Arduino, [Spikenzie] has made a sound effects box. Each button
triggers a unique sound that is stored in the Voice Shield. Of coarse,
it will be like a game of memory trying to remember what sound is where.
You can see a demo video here.

You don't need to buy new hardware to speed up your desktop

ZoomZoom

<>

Manufacturers and PC vendors would have you believe that there's only one way to speed up your machine: buy new kit.

And then, in 18 months, buy new kit again. However, it's usually our software that's the real bottleneck.

If you've been using Linux for a while, you'll already have discovered lighter alternatives to some of the platform's bloatfests – for example, using AbiWord and Gnumeric in the place of OpenOffice.org.

But what about the desktop itself? To start with, let's look at how the layers of the Linux GUI fit together.

That's the setup when you're running one of the big three desktops (Gnome, KDE, Xfce). However, if you choose a standalone window manager (WM), you can cut out the first and third layers in this stack. A window manager tends to incorporate all desktop functionality into a single executable that doesn't have additional programs such as file managers.

Ahead of Election, Iraq’s Leader Pushes for Gains - NYTimes.com

Ahead of Election, Iraq's Leader Pushes for Gains

Published: January 25, 2009

JANAJUH, Iraq — Few have as much to gain or lose from the provincial elections on Saturday as Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, whose party is battling rivals across Iraq.

From palm grove-sheltered villages, like his hometown here in southern Iraq, to the crowded streets of Baghdad, Iraqis will cast votes that will strongly signal how much power Mr. Maliki, an increasingly authoritarian leader, will be able to command. Either the vote will strengthen his party at the local level or it will bolster his rivals, who want to keep more power in the provinces.

For now, Mr. Maliki is trying to reassure Iraqis that while he will be a strong leader, he will also respect local interests. At a gathering of thousands of tribal leaders in Karbala recently, he said, "The iron centralization has ended," and added that the country would have federalism, a term used here to mean provincial power.

Many Iraqi politicians — even some onetime allies — do not believe him. They fear a return to the sway of a single leader, arbitrary and bloodthirsty, with power concentrated in Baghdad.

Virus strikes 15 million PCs - UPI.com

Virus strikes 15 million PCs

LONDON, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A virulent computer virus has infected more than 15 million computers around the world so far, British experts say.

The Independent on Sunday reported that the worm -- known as Downadup, Conficker or Kido -- had contaminated 6 million PCs in the past three days alone.

The newspaper said more than 3,000 British organizations, including hospitals and the Ministry of Defense, have received the virus.

Officials in Britain, the United States, Russia, China and India say they are waiting to see what the virus's effects will be, if anything.

The newspaper reported there is a possibility the virus has no function other than to demonstrate its originator's skill, but some security experts think it unlikely a worm so sophisticated at this one would have no ulterior purpose.

Tom Gaffney, technical manager of F-Secure, says this could be to capture confidential information, such as online account details and passwords. He said it is likely the worm is a "rootkit," which gives the virus designer administrative access to remote computers.

ardour | the new digital audio workstation

Ardour

Sounds like a Revolution

Ardour is a digital audio workstation. You can use it to record, edit and mix multi-track audio. You can produce your own CDs, mix video soundtracks, or just experiment with new ideas about music and sound.

Ardour capabilities include: multichannel recording, non-destructive editing with unlimited undo/redo, full automation support, a powerful mixer, unlimited tracks/busses/plugins, timecode synchronization, and hardware control from surfaces like the Mackie Control Universal. If you've been looking for a tool similar to ProTools, Nuendo, Pyramix, or Sequoia, you might have found it.

Above all, Ardour strives to meet the needs of professional users. This means implementing all the "hard stuff" that other DAWs ( even some leading commercial apps ) handle incorrectly or not at all. Ardour has a completely flexible "anything to anywhere" routing system, and will allow as many physical I/O ports as your system allows. Ardour supports a wide range of audio-for-video features such as video-synced playback and pullup/pulldown sample rates. You will also find powerful features such as "persistent undo", multi-language support, and destructive track punching modes that aren't available on other platforms.
