Interesting... I noticed that the hardware Specs are about the same as two old P3 PC's that I have around the house. Well, except I don't have 512mb of ram for them, more like 195 to 300mb. I've been looking for a Linux OS that could turn them into Media PC's. And I know that there is an Android-x86 Project - Run Android on Your PC. I don't have an HD-TV yet. So, all I need is S-Video or RF outputs to my TV's and those Video Cards are cheep now a-days.  Hmmm... I downloaded the Android-x86 Project - Run Android on Your PC and will tried it out in Virtual Box to see if I like it... Well, Android on Your PC is not what I expected. I was expecting a trimmed down, but use-able OS. Nope, that's not what you get with android-x86-2.2-generic.iso or android-x86-2.2-eeepc.iso. The android-x86-2.2-eeepc.iso is recommended for use in VirtualBox on this page, http://www.android-x86.org/documents/virtualboxhowto). But I could see no difference in either and x86-2.2-generic.iso or android-x86-2.2-eeepc.iso is mentioned as preferred by davematthew in his notes on the same page. All there is when you Boot them in VirtualBox, is a Desktop that does nothing. The only two things that even respond are the volume Icon and a Lock Icon and all they do is jump a little when you click on them. There is the Time showing, which does change, so it seems to work, but in Military Time. I had already spent about 2 hours Yesterday, on the Android Sites. Figuring out how thing work and finding the ISO files to download. So, I didn't feel like messing with it any more. There are instructions on how to upload and get music to play on this page, http://www.android-x86.org/documents/virtualboxhowto. Which I didn't find until today. It takes allot of command line work in Debug Mode to get it to work. I can already tell that Android-x86, is not what I'm looking for to build my Media PC's. So, Now I know...

Android-x86 - Porting Android to x86

Android-x86 Project - Run Android on Your PC

This is a project to port Android open source project to x86 platform, formerly known as "patch hosting for android x86 support". The original plan is to host different patches for android x86 support from open source community. A few months after we created the project, we found out that we could do much more than just hosting patches. So we decide to create our code base to provide support on different x86 platforms, and set up a git server to host it.

This is an open source project licensed under Apache Public License 2.0. If you think we did something great, consider making a donation.

What is new?

Android-x86 - Porting Android to x86

Build 20110101

Test build 20110101 for Android-x86 2.2 (Froyo-x86).

The Android-x86 project is glad to announce a new test build 20110101 for public testing. This is a release candidate for android-x86 2.2 stable release. Live CD ISOs are available from our sites, as usual

Key Features

The test build is based on the Android 2.2 (Froyo branch). We fixed and added many x86 specified code to let the system runs smoothly on x86 platforms, especially for netbooks or tablets. The key features contain
  • Kernel 2.6.35.7 with KMS enabled. Most netbooks can run Android-x86 in the native resolution.
  • Hardware OpenGL acceleration for Intel integrated graphic chipsets. It is turned on by default if the i915 driver is available. However, if you have trouble with it, you can disable it by adding HWACCEL=0 to the cmdline. (by olv from 0xlab)
  • Wifi and Ethernet support. Both are configured from the GUI.
  • Support 3G USB modem with auto-configuration.
  • A new text based GUI installer which supports ext3/ext2/ntfs/fat32 filesystems. The installer now supports read-write mode, as well as a tool to create a fake sdcard.
  • Bluetooth support for builtin device and external bluetooth dongle.
  • Keyboard layout is configurable. To use it, you have to install Android-x86 to harddisk and reboot after changing the setting.
  • External usb drive and sdcard are auto mounted on plugging.
  • Add touch features to simulate Home/Menu/Back keys, useful for touchscreen only devices.
  • Add software mouse cursor. Mouse wheel is also supported.
  • Compressed filesystem (squashfs).
  • MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is added to replace android's dumb sh.
  • Touchscreen calibration.
  • Battery status percentage.
  • AndAppStore client 1.6.8.
