Tiny Core Linux 3.3 released - The H Open Source: News and Features

Tiny Core Linux 3.3 released

Tiny Core Linux 3.3 running the Chromium web browser. Vergrößern Tiny Core lead developer Robert Shingledecker has announced the release of version 3.3 of Tiny Core Linux. Based on the 2.6.33.3 Linux kernel, Tiny Core Linux 3.3 features updates to the Fast Light Toolkit (FLTK), such as a new integrated file manager and a minimal editor under System tools.

The latest release includes updated and reorganised boot help screens, as well as a reorganised Control Panel that places more frequently used items into the System Tools menu – AppsAudit and Run Command have been moved to the System Tools menu, while PPI Setup and TermServer Setup have been moved to Control Panel. The AppBrowser has also been updated, integrating setdrive, and the ondemand module for the Fast Light Window Manager (flwm_ondemand) has been updated to support a combined, single ondemand directory. Shingledecker also notes that a new data structure is used for wbarconf, which replaces wbar_exclude, so any current wbar_excluded items (xwbar.lst) will need to be remade.

Tiny Core is a minimal Linux distribution that weighs in at just over 10 MB in size. The "tiny frugal" desktop distribution features the BusyBox tool collection and a minimal graphics system based on Tiny X and JWM. The core can run entirely in RAM, allowing a very fast boot. With the help of online repositories, Tiny Core Linux can be expanded to include additional applications.

Further information about the release, including a full list of changes, can be found in the forum release announcement. Tiny Core Linux 3.3 is available to download as an ISO image file from the project's site. Tiny Core can be run or installed from a LiveCD or LiveUSB drive, and an installation guide is provided. At the time of writing, the project's home page had yet to be updated with the new version.
