Setting up Firefox Sync - Before Reformatting and Updating a Linux OS

I don't run Firefox Sync, all the time. Because it uses too many resources. And slows down Firefox and my Computer as well. I guess a 1.8GHz Core 2, with 2.5GB of Ram. Just isn't enough machine to run Firefox Sync, well. But, I do like to Sync My Bookmarks and Firefox Add-ons between my other Linux Systems. I do this every so often. Especially, before I reformat a Machine with a new Linux OS. I like to try out different Linux Distros. First I try them out in Virtual Box or Qemu. Then if I really like them. I put them on a Real Hardware Machine. My Favourites are Fedora and Debian. So, I'm getting ready to Reformat a Laptop running Korora 17 (a Fedora 17 Remix). With Fedora 19 Jam-KDE. The Audio Video Spin of Fedora. If it runs well on the Laptop. It is a 2GHz Core 2, with 3GB of Ram. So, I think it will run just fine. Then I will put it on the 1.8GHz System too. I'm running Fedora 14 on it now. I stayed with Fedora 14. Because I love Gnome 2. And really can Stand Gnome 3. I don't really care for KDE, either. But, I love many of the KDE Apps. I cant work without Krusader! The twin panel file manager. I'm running Mate on the Laptop and it works just fine. But, Mate does not have all of the features that Gnome 2 has. So, I installed Gnome 3 on the Laptop. Just to get more Gnome functionality. And I've had a few headaches, with this System. With Gnome 3 and Mate Start-up Apps, fighting for control of the System. Such as Audio Settings and Screen Savers. I went through all of the Start-up items, several times and have most everything working well now. But, Korora 17 is now past it's End of Life too. So, I need to update my Fedora 14 and 17 Systems, soon. They all work just fine. But, There could be Security Problems, that come up. That I wont get any updates for. I run SE Linux. And it Stops most anything bad, that comes my way. But, SE Linux needs updates, from time to time too. So... since I always turn Firefox Sync off, after I get my Syncing Done. I have to set it up. Each time I want to Sync Again. And I forget the exact Procedure, that has to be done. To get it up and running again. It's really not very intuitive, to me. And the Instructions are written in Bits and Pieces Throughout the Firefox Site. So, I have to search and read and reread, just to get Firefox to Sync again. And of course I have to find that long Firefox Sync Key and my Firefox Password too. So, it took me about 2 to 2.5 hours, just to get my Syncing up and running this time!:O So, I'm Posting this and the Firefox Sync Instructions, in this Post. For my own and your future reference... What it boils down to is... Go to Firefox Preferences or Tools Sync and follow the instructions. But, the confusing thing to me. Is that you have to start on one machine. Doesn't matter which one. Get those Code Numbers from the Wizard. Put, them in the other Machine. Then in your "Other Machine". Do the same thing. Ya, that still doesn't make much sense. Just do the same in Both Machines and Follow the instructions in the Wizards. You have to do this on Both Machines. And I only saw this on one of the Firefox Instructions Pages. Way down at the Bottom. Just before the Android Set-up, info... So, maybe we will be able to get our Syncing Done, a bit faster, next time. If I can remember that I Posted this and can find it on my Blog, that is!;)

How do I set up Firefox Sync?

When you set up Firefox Sync on your computer, all of your data and preferences (such as your bookmarks, history, passwords, open tabs and installed add-ons) gets stored securely on the Mozilla servers. Then you can connect other devices (a mobile phone for example) and they will be automatically synchronized, giving you access to all of your information no matter where you are. This article will walk you though setting up Firefox Sync for the first time.

Part 1: Set up Firefox Sync on a computer

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click the Tools menu and select Set Up Sync. The Firefox Sync Setup window will open.
  2. Click Create a New Account.
  3. Fill in your account details:
    • Email address
    • Choose a password and enter it a second time to make sure you have it right.
    • Agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
