This is a Review, which quickly turned into a larger than expected Project. The XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle from Element14.com Review and First Experience by me, Don Bishop. When I first saw the Road Test on Element14.com for the The XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle. I almost didn't apply. I didn't have a Raspberry Pi. Though, I have been wanting one, since before they came out. I had followed the Pi's Progress, since I first read about it. When it was still in the development phase. But, still didn't have one, at the time. I have been wanting to setup an XBMC Computer for my Mom to watch Web Shows on her TV, for a long time. I have a few older PC's that would work just fine for the task. But, they all need more memory, which cost more money. And one, doesn't even have a AGP Video connector. So, it would need a PCI Video Card, to be able to connect it to a TV. And that's the one that I really would like to use. Since, I am using the other one my self, as a backup computer. So, with the price of the Raspberry Pi being low. And the built in Composite and HDMI Video Outputs. As well as a Stereo Analog Audio output. Her TV is a Big, older Standard Analog TV. She does have one LDC TV. But it is a small 15 inch, which is in her Bedroom. And I have already bought an HDMI Cable to hook up her computer in her room to that TV. I Just need to find my Round Tuit and hook that thing up;) So, the purchase of the Raspberry Pi, seemed reasonable. Instead of buying memory for the older PC's. So, I signed up for the Road Test. Deciding, that, if I were chosen to do the Review. I would go ahead and buy the Pi. And low and behold... I was chosen!:) Thanks so much Element14!:) I have done a couple of other Road Tests. Here, Beginners View of the TI 430Boost-CC110L AIR Module BoosterPack Kit. And here, Beginners Guide to The TI MSP-EXP430FR5739 Experimenter Board. And I wanted to do especially well on this Road Test. I hadn't done any Videos, in the past. Because I didn't have a Video Camera. I only had two old Web Cams, with very low Resolution. I've used them to make videos, before. But, don't like the low resolution video quality. But, since my last Road Tests. I was given a Laptop, that was broken. I fixed it and it has a fairly decent, built in Web Cam. So, I set out to do Video as I went, during my Testing and Building or Reworking of an Enclosure for the Pi. I spent as much time as I could. Since I received the XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle from Element14, on doing this Project and making my video as I went. Well, of course making videos. Takes allot more time. And just as soon as you start a task, that has any kind of Deadline. Unusual things come up and get in the way. So, at the present time. I am about half finished with altering an old broken HDTV Tuner Box, to be my Raspberry Pi Enclosure. But, I have done ample Testing and Setup on the XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle. I have four Videos Edited and uploaded, as of 10-21-13. With several more to come. Long Video Warnings here. I did my best to Edit down the rough videos, to make them, watchable videos. I spent a week on Editing just the first three videos and I' still going. Not to mention the time it took to make them in the first place. But, I just couldn't bring my self to cut out all of the pertinent info, that I worked so hard to put in these videos. So, feel free to Skip Ahead, if you are in a hurry or just skim the Text and Pics in this Article...

My first problem, was not actually with the XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle. But, with finding the Best Power Supply for the Raspberry Pi. I made a post on my Blog about that little four day search here, In Search of The Best Power Supply for the Raspberry Pi - Video and Links. I chose these for my Setup.
(Wireless Keyboard and Raspberry Pi)
After I received my Pi and the XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle. I Hooked it all up and began looking through the Raspbmc XBMC OS for the Raspberry Pi. Since my Composite input on my TV is already in use. I used a VCR as a Pass Through Composite input Device. I have found that old VCR's are still good for something;) That reminds me... I will be using a DVD Player Recorder, to get the Composite Signal into the TV in the Living Room. And just when I thought I might be able to get that thing back!... Oh well...
First thing, when you are using the Composite (RCA Connector) Video Output. You may have to hit the number 3 (for PAL) or 4 (for NTSC) on your Keyboard during Boot-up. Each number, (1-4) is used to Activate a Video Output (Composite or HDMI). The default is HDMI, if you don't hit any key, on Boot. After you Boot, one time, with Composite Output. Your Pi, may remember your selection.
Here's the info, from the Raspberry Pi Quick Start Guide
Download the PDF here, http://www.raspberrypi.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/quick-start-guide-v2_1.pdf
Your Pi will now boot into NOOBS and should display a list of operating systems that you can
choose to install. If your display remains blank, you should select the correct output mode for your
display by pressing one of the following number keys on your keyboard;
1. HDMI mode this is the default display mode.
2. HDMI safe mode select this mode if you are using the HDMI connector and cannot see
anything on screen when the Pi has booted.
3. Composite PAL mode select either this mode or composite NTSC mode if you are using
the composite RCA video connector
4. Composite NTSC mode
(Raspberry Pi running Raspbmc and hooked up to a big Composite Cable, going to my TV)
I have been using XBMC on several different Fedora Linux Systems, for the last few years. I now have XBMC on my Fedora 14 and Korora 17 (a Fedora Remix) Systems. I like XBMC for the ease of finding Videos form many different Sites. By the use of the Apps, that are available in XBMC. And I think that this will be a good way for someone, like my Mom. Who is not adept at Searching the Web. To be able to find Video to watch. Without allot of trouble. She, can peruse the menus or use the search in each App to find things to watch. I am very accustomed to just searching in Google for what ever I am looking for. So, depending on what I am searching for. I may find it faster and easier for me to find what I am looking for in a Web Browser. So, I often find and watch video, directly in my Web Browser (my favorite Browser is Firefox). And I use the Thunderbird e-mail Client as a way to keep a list of links to videos that I want to watch later. This works out well for me. Since I too am using an old 1980's TV. I have the Laptop that I mentioned before. Setup to watch video on my TV. It is hard to read Text on the TV. Even with the S-Video Cable. Much less a Composite Cable. There is a small noticeable difference in clarity. Between, reading text coming from S-Video and Composite Cables. S-Video being just a bit clearer and readable on the TV Screen. I can now just look over at the Laptop, when I need to read smaller text. I used a Desktop, set to 1024x768 Video Resolution and the Text Size Enlarged as well, for a couple of years, prior to getting the Laptop. Now, being that the Pi, only had the choice, of either Composite or HDMI Signals. I have to use the Composite Cable with my TV's. And it does make even the rather large Menus in Raspbmc, rather hard to read on the TV Screen. There is no way to enlarge the Text, that I can find in Raspbmc or to Change the Resolution from the one Default size in in Raspbmc. 720x480 I believe, is the Default Resolution in Raspbmc. Which is actually the Correct Resolution for my TV. I just need to be able to make the Text a little Larger. The Blurry Text, is a definite problem for me. As compared to running XBMC on a Desktop or a Laptop Running a full Linux OS. From within the Gnome, Mate etc Desktops. Where you have the options to set, both the Resolution and the Text Size to your needs. I hope, that it will be usable for Mom. Since, she wouldn't be using a Web Browser or anything else but the menus in XBMC. She may be able to see them better on her larger TV in the Living Room. There is a Text Based Web Browsing App in XBMC. But, it is of very little use to me. And it loads pages very slowly, as well. So, I only use it, for basic text searches. When the Apps wont find what I'm looking for. I wish XBMC did have a fully functional Web Browser. Then I could use it for all of my Online Video watching. I could search and find the Network TV Shows Web Sites and watch their Shows, from within XBMC. As it is now. I switch between a Regular Desktop System, like Gnome or Mate and the XBMC Desktop. Yes, I did call XBMC a Desktop. Because, that is really what it is. You can install XBMC on most Linux Distros and Windows OS's, too. In Linux, you can either Boot Directly to the XBMC Desktop, or run XBMC from within Gnome, Mate, KDE etc. I haven't tried out XBMC in Windows, since I seldom use Windows. So, I don't know how it works, there.
(the Raspbmc SD Card in the Raspberry Pi)
(Raspbmc showing on my TV Screen)
Now, back to the XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle, itself. I really like the Wireless keyboard. It has good range. Much better than a regular Remote Control for a TV. And you don't have to Point it at the Wireless Sensor Dongle on the Pi, for it to work. This is a big Plus. The small Mouse Buttons, do take a little getting use to. There are four of them. Two on the left side. I think I would prefer one on each side of the keyboard, though (right and left, like a mouse). And there are two more mouse buttons, right and left, opposite the Touch Pad. These two are small and I have trouble finding them without my glasses. And I don't watch TV with my Dollar Store Glasses on. I had never used a Mini Keyboard of any kind, until this one. So, I can't compare it to other brands. But, this one, is easy to use, over all. It's similar enough to a regular keyboard. That I only had to glance at the tiny little Quick Start Guide, with my Magnifying Glass a couple of times. To figure out, what all of the extra buttons do. I especially like the Shutdown Button. It is much more convenient. Than using the Mouse Pad to move the Cursor to the Shut Down Menu, when you want to shut down your System. I kept accidentally tapping on things, when I was just trying to move to a different Menu. The Touch Pad Tap feature, is very sensitive. Which is probably a good thing. I'm not good at using Mouse Pads. I always hook up a Real Mouse to my Laptop. And... don't forget to use the Shut Down Menu in Raspbmc! I had to shut down my Pi by unplugging the Power Supply Cable, a couple of times. When my experiments with getting my old Analog PC TV Tuner Card to work with this Setup, didn't work out. I did get it working, after finding the one App (Zapping TV) that I had in ArtistX Linux. I have several OS's on all of my Computers, in Duel Boot Mode. Zapping TV would recognize the Composite Signal and tune it in just fine. But, that System only has 512MB of memory and it just couldn't keep up.
(Zapping TV App Recognized my Analog TV Tuner Card)
(Zapping TV, with Raspbmc showing on my 23 inch Monitor, through my Analog TV Tuner Card on an old PC)
I also Tried out Tuning in the Composite Signal, coming from the Pi to the VCR with my USB HDTV Stick. It only works in Windows. So, I keep Win7 on the Laptop for that. It's a Duel Boot System with Win7 and Korora 17 (Fedora Remix). But, no such luck. The HDTV Stick will tune in Analog Channels. There are a few still in Operation in my area. But, it doesn't see the Signal coming via RF, from the VCR to the HDTV Stick...
(trying to Tun in the Signal coming from the VCR, via RF Cable)
I quickly saw that Raspbmc is build on Debian Linux. When I put the SD Card into my Laptop's Card Reader and did some looking around in the File System. I thought it was built on Debian. But, couldn't remember for sure, at the time. Of coarse, it says so, on the Raspbmc Web Site. But, I didn't want to stop playing with my new toy, just to look that up;) I wanted to back up my Raspbmc OS. So, that I could experiment a little with the other Raspberry Pi OS's, that are in the NOOBS.v1.2.1 Multi OS. That I previously downloaded. But, I ran into File Permission Errors and gave up on copying the Raspbmc OS directly from the SD card, to back it up. I also tried it with Parted Magic, the Linux Distro. But, had problems there too. And I do routinely use Parted Magic. So, I think there is some odd File Permission thing going on with the Raspbmc SD cards. I've seen this happen, with Files, that have been given their Permissions in Windows OS's, sometimes. I wonder, how they Formatted these Cards? That was a bit of a pain. Since, I'm not planning on keeping the Pi for my Self. But, intending on making it a Permanent Installation in the Living room, for Mom's TV Watching Pleasure. I don't want to do something like Reformatting the SD Card with Noobs. That could possible break the Raspbmc OS and cause any more delays on this Project. I'm coming up on the Deadline for my Review and Mom's Birthday, for which this is supposed to be her Present, is rabidly approaching, too. I would like to play with the Pi and the other OS's though... Maybe buying more memory for that old PC wouldn't be such a bad idea, after all;)
Update (12-07-13)...
I did end up Re-Formatting the Pi's SD Card with Noobs and then back again with RaspBMC. I had a little problem with the Original File System, that came on the Pre-Formatted Element 14 SD Card, becoming Corrupted. And the System Would Not Boot. I thought at first that this was because. I had to Hard Shut Down the Pi, a couple of times. By Un-Plugging the Power Cord. When I couldn't see the OS in the Monitor. During my Tests on using the Analog TV Card to input the Signal to a Computer. And when the OS Froze up and would Not go to into Shut Down Mode in the GUI. But, Since Reformatting the Card, I have not had this Problem again. Through several Hard Shutdowns, since then. Initially, I used GParted, a GUI Partition Managing App, that I have been using since about 2005 to Repair the File System on the Card. I Put the Card in my Laptop and used GParted to Both Repair and Re-Format the SD Card. So, that I would have a new and clean file system. I did this in Korora 17, a Fedora Linux Remix. I was able to just point and Click, to Repair the File System, in GParted. The OS worked just fine, after the repair. But, by then. I had the Bug and could not Resist, trying out Noobs and several of the OS's included in Noobs. I tried out OpenELEC, RaspBian and the PiDora and maybe one or two more. It was fun to see the Pi Running my Favorite Linux OS's. But, many old PC's can do this. And with the many full Distros of Linux available online. And I have been doing this since 2005, with old and new Computers, that I have. So, it was time to get the Pi, ready for Mom's Pi TV... On my first Re-Format. I Followed the Linux Instructions in the Pi Quick Start Guide, here, http://www.raspberrypi.org/quick-start-guide. Download the PDF here, http://www.raspberrypi.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/quick-start-guide-v2_1.pdf. I wanted to see if there was actually any noticeable difference in Performance of the System. When Formatted in Windows or Linux (Like they say in one of the Manuals). I could not tell any Difference in System Performance, of RaspBMC. When Formatted in Windows or Linux, my self. Note: Although, the Initial SD Card Formatting of the First Partition, is done as the Fat32 File System. The actual installation Process for RaspBMC and most other Modern Linux OS's use the Ext4 File System and some use LVM's too. Which are Developed for Running Linux OS's. There will be another Ext4 File System made on the SD Card, automatically by the installer. For your Actual Linux OS, ie RaspBMC, PiDora, RaspBian etc. And if you Put your Finished SD Card in a Windows System and try to read it. You will not be able to See the Ext4 File System. Because Windows OS's Can't read Ext File Systems. There is an App, that will make Windows able to read Ext2 File Systems, that I use to use. It's called, Ext2 Installable File System For Windows. It works great in WinXP, but not so well in Win7. But, it doesn't work with Ext4. I just did a search for it and also found, Ext2Read. It is supposed to allow you to Read Ext 2 to 4 File Systems. I will try it out later. Here's a couple of Pages with good info on it. http://www.howtogeek.com/112888/ and http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/33387/how-to-browse-your-linux-partition-from-windows/. So, after Re-Formatting again with SD Formatter (PDF Manual) in Windows 7. I stuck with this Method. Since it was easy to Install RaspBMC on the SD Card, with the Windows Installer. Everything has run just fine. No more Corrupted File Systems. After Quite a few Runs and Hard Shut Downs. So, I felt like everything was Ready for Mom to use...
The XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle Keyboard. Would work just fine with most any PC, as well. I did try out the Wireless keyboard on the Laptop and it worked just fine, as expected. It wouldn't be an ideal keyboard for me to use in regular Computer work or even to watch TV. Since I am so accustomed to my Big Keyboard with a Real Volume Knob. Since I am not adept at using the Touch Pad and you would pretty much have to type with your Thumbs. Or else lay it down and type with your fingers, on that tiny little thing. Ya, I tried it all. But, I'm sticking with my Full Size Keyboard and Mouse, for my TV and PCing, for the For See-able Future... But, in the Living Room and for Watching TV. I think that this little Wireless Keyboard is just the thing.
(Raspberry Pi with Raspbmc SD Card, front side)

(File Permission Errors, gave up on copying the Raspbmc OS directly from the SD card, to back it up)
Update (12-07-13)
I finally Finished the Case Mods for Mom's Pi TV. That's what I'm calling it now... Here are a few Pics of it Setup and Running on Mom's TV in the Living Room. She likes it. But, there is a bit of a learning Curve, for her. With the Wireless Keyboard and the XBMC - RaspBMC Menus. The bad thing is... The Menus are almost completely Un-Readable on the TV, using the Composite Video Connection. I can get around in them ok. Since I am acustomed to them. Since I have used XBMC on Desktops and now my Laptop for the last Couple of years. So, Mom decided to buy an new LCD TV. That's Progress in Action;)
I ended up making 70 Plus Videos of the Whole Project. Now, all I have to do, is Edit them down and Upload them. I will work on the video editing, as I can. And then I will either Update this Review or Post it in a Separate Blog Post. Which ever works best, at the time.
That was a couple of years ago. I have had to Reformat my SD Card twice since then. Initially, I used GParted, a Free and Open Source GUI Partition Managing App, that I have been using since about 2005 to Repair the File System on the Card. I Put the Card in my Laptop and used GParted to Both Repair and Re-Format the SD Card. So, that I would have a new and clean file system. You may also want to try out, BerryBoot v2.0 - bootloader / universal operating system installer. I ran RaspBMC (XBMC Media Player for the Pi) on my Pi Model B. With 512MB of Ram. From 2013, till 2015. But, after all of the Updates. The System Slowed down to a crawl. And couldn't play most Videos. So, I went in search of a lighter weight OS for my Pi, a couple of months ago. I ended up using Berry Boot to install OpenELEC. Another XBMC Remix, that is very light weight and uses less resources. It is working much better now. There are several other OS's that come with BerryBoot, that may be interesting to you too. That may run better on your Model A Pi.
All in all, there were no real problems with the XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle. It all worked very well and I am very glad that I got the chance to Review and to have this Great Kit!:)...
Thanks Again, Element14!:)
