I am pleased to announce that GNUN 0.5 is available for download from ftp.gnu.org and its mirrors. GNUnited Nations (or GNUN for short) is a build system for www.gnu.org translations, supposed to make translators' lives easier. The name is a pun of United Nations (and its commonly used acronym UN). GNUN consists of a few makefiles and helper scripts, which convert the gnu.org HTML articles in PO format and vice-versa; it ensures that any changes to the original essays are made prominent to translators (as "fuzzy" or "untranslated" gettext messages). In addition, it includes some facilities to assist translation teams when organizing their work within the team, and a program for HTML validation that can be useful for GNU webmasters. Translators do not need to install GNUN to maintain their translations; an official "build bot" runs at fencepost.gnu.org. This release is the result of more than two years development. However, just like 0.4, it doesn't include all planned features -- an "emergency" release had to be made to support the new gnu.org server templates layout and Multiviews conventions. As the package is of limited interest to the general audience, new releases are announced at the trans-coord-news mailing list. This release is an exception, because it includes support for automatic notification about new translations. Any user can subscribe to trans-coord-news [*] to receive announcements for new gnu.org translations. With the help of GNU Mailman's "topics" feature, they can be filtered by language depending on the subscriber's preference. Introduction to GNUnited Nations
GNUnited Nations (GNUN) is a build system for www.gnu.org translations. It generates a PO template (.pot) for an original HTML article, and merges the changes into all translations, which are maintained as PO (.po) files. Finally, it regenerates the translations in HTML format.
The goal of GNUN is to make maintenance of gnu.org translations easier and to avoid the effect of seriously outdated translations when a particular team becomes inactive.
Currently, GNUN is pretty much tied to the layout and structure of GNU Project's website and is not suitable for other sites.

Downloading GNUN
GNUN can be found on http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gnun/ [via http] and ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gnun/ [via FTP]. It can also be found on one of our FTP mirrors; please use a mirror if possible.

GNUN has one mailing list: <trans-coord-devel@gnu.org>, which is used to discuss all aspects of GNUN. <bug-gnun@gnu.org> is an alias.
Announcements about GNUN releases are being made on <trans-coord-news@gnu.org>. You can use Mailman's “topics” by subscribing to the gnun topic — that way you will not receive other messages which might not be of interest.
To subscribe to these or any GNU mailing lists, please send an empty mail with a Subject: header line of just “subscribe” to the relevant -request list. For example, to subscribe yourself to GNU announcement list, you would send mail to <info-gnu-request@gnu.org> with no body and a Subject: header line of just “subscribe”. The “trans-coord” project is a special organizational project, with the goal to provide infrastructure for easy maintenance of www.gnu.org translations.

For development sources and other information, please see the trans-coord project page at savannah.gnu.org.
Documentation
Documentation for the translation process is available, as is documentation for most GNU software. The two manuals are distributed with the gnun package, so you may read them by running info web-trans or info gnun, provided GNUN is installed on your system.
Mailing Lists/Newsgroups
This project has three mailing lists: <trans-coord-discuss@gnu.org>, <trans-coord-news@gnu.org> and <trans-coord-devel@gnu.org>.
The main discussion list is <trans-coord-discuss@gnu.org>, and is used to discuss all aspects of the translation process. For the time being, this is a private mailing list.
There is a separate list used for announcements of GNUN releases and updates to What's New, <trans-coord-news@gnu.org>.
Development of GNUN happens on <trans-coord-devel@gnu.org>. Logs from the automatic GNUN build jobs are also sent to this list.
