Re: Great Practices for e-mailing!

Yep, pretty good stuff. Except a few things... Most Spam sending Viruses, access the infected PC's e-mail address book, not the saved e-mails in the machine. If there even are any... Not that there aren't any Viruses like that out there. But that kind of Virus would have to scan the whole computer and all the text in the appropriate files. And break any encryption that most e-mail programs have built in to protect the user's data. This would alert any user with any common sense, because their computer would be busy... ie you could tell by the HD making noise as it is being read for a long period of time... for now apparent reason. Such as, you are not doing anything to cause the drive to be read heavily...

The BCC doesn't hide the recipients e-mail addresses any more in most e-mail applications. It use to back in 1998 - 1999 when I was first learning this stuff. But for some reason, of which I'm not sure now. If I remember right, the defaults were changed in e-mail programs by the makers to help stop Spammers from using this technique to hide the other addresses which the Spam they send is being sent to. If you use BCC the recipients will still show up in the sent mail's headers... Or at lest they did the last time I tried it, a few years ago... I BCC'd this to another e-mail address of mine. Let's see if you can see it...

Oh, and by the way... all e-mails have Headers which show the sender, their IP address and the other addresses being sent to... You just have to change the View of your e-mail window to see this. And a "smart" Spam Virus could easily read all these Headers in a machine. To see the Headers in an e-mail... in Thunderbird, you just select View - Headers All to see the info. But Spammers also know how to fake this info, so tracing this which is also easy with Network Trace Rout and other methods which many programs out there can do for you... is really of little use with a Tech Savvy Spammer. E-mail are really just Open for the World to see, if you have any knowledge and Purpose to get into other peoples business... There is are Encryption Programs out there which can be used to protect your e-mail communication. I have OpenPGP added to my Thunderbird E-mail Application. But, I haven't really used it at all, because the Recipient has to have a program and encryption keys to decrypt the encrypted e-mails I send. It is rather involved to set up and I don't by any means know all bout this technology... I got into it back about 8 years ago, but now one else I wrote to understood it. So I dropped out of trying to use it until recently.
The rest it pretty good advise. I am now trying to always remove the headers in all my forwards. You may have noticed this in the Fwd's I have sent you... But it is a bit of a pain. I have to click on Format - Table - Delete Table in my e-mail program (Thunderbird) after I have selected the header with all the info about the senders address and all the previous recipients as well... I feel like it is worth it for my self as well...

Here's some of your's...
IP address: (Deleteted for Privacy)

Whois info:

Windstream Communications Inc WINDSTREAM (NET-75-88-0-0-1)
DELETED this for Privacy...

# ARIN WHOIS database, last updated 2009-03-23 19:10
# Enter ? for additional hints on searching ARIN's WHOIS database.

That is all I could copy and paste, out of my program. But there is allot more info on the Servers your e-mail went through... Like the name of your ISP or the company that they route their e-mails through. And the city or one close by where your e-mail originated from. It's all pretty complicated and I don't try all that hard to understand it all. But, you can get a general idea of where an e-mail came from pretty easily. Don't worry!:O Your home address isn't available to the www though;) Just to Big Bro!:O

Basically, just don't send anything that you really want to keep Private in an e-mail...

Thanks for the info...

Ha, well that's not very comforting to know that info is out there for anyone to get if they wanted. Yes, deleting all the fwd headers is hard for me as well but I would rather do it if I am going to fwd an email. No, I could not see the Bcc you sent it to. Could you see the people I sent bcc the orig fwd to? Because I sent it to everyone as Bcc only. I can't see the info in which you speak but maybe that is because I use Hotmail or like you said my settings have all that turned off. Others may be able to see the Bcc if they have their settings to able them to see it or using another email program in which it may show up. I donno.... :)

Well, that's good to know that the BCC didn't show up. I can't remember for sure if there are more tricks to see all the addresses an e-mail was sent to. No, I didn't see any of the other e-mail addresses you sent that one to in the header. Actually, I don't think that the ones you sent to ever do show up in the header... even though I think I may have said they do:O Web Mail... Ya, I didn't mention it, but Web Mail is different. I think you may still be able to see the headers if you wan, if they didn't change that function in Hotmail... i wouldn't worry too much about the He adders though. That's the way e-mail has always worked and they do give you a way to track Spammers. At least the unskilled ones... Actually, the Pros can track most any Internet Communications...

Great practices for e-mailing. Seriously, please read and follow them:

A computer expert received the following directly from a system administrator for a corporate system. It is an excellent message that ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send e-mails. Please read the short letter below, even if you're sure you already follow proper procedures.
Do you really know how to forward emails? 50% of us DO NOT. Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail? Help protect everyones privacy! Do you hate it? Every time you forward an e-mail there is information left over from the people who got the message before you, namely their email addresses and names. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every email address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That's right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel!
How do you stop it? Well, there are several easy steps. Try the following if you haven't done it before:
(1) When you forward an email, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That's right, DELETE them._ Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the "Forward" button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don't click on "Forward" first, you won't be able to edit the message at all. (2) Whenever you send an email to more than one person, do NOT Use the To: or Cc: fields for adding email addresses. Always use the BCC: (blind carbon copy) field for listing the email addresses. This is the way the people you send to will only see their own e-mail address. If you don't see your BCC: option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy.. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say "Undisclosed Recipients in the "TO:" field of the people who receive it. (3) Remove any " FW: " in the subject line and or >>>>> in the body. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling. (4) ALWAYS use your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. Ever get those e- mails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By removing>>>>> and forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many emails just to see what you sent. (5) Have you ever gotten an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses. A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein.
DO NOT put your email address of any petition.
If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition. (And don't believe the ones that say that the email is being traced, it just aren't so!)
Some of the other emails to delete and not forward are:
1. The one that says something like, "Send this email to 10 people and you'll see something great run across your screen." Or sometimes they'll just tease you by saying "some thing really cute will happen." IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!!!! (We are still seeing some of the same emails that we waited on 10 years ago!)
2. Don't let the bad luck ones scare you either. Trash them. 3. Before you forward an 'Amber Alert', or a 'Virus Alert', or some of the other emails floating around nowadays, check them out before you forward them. Most of them are junk mail that's been circling the net for YEARS! Just about everything you receive in an email that is in question can be checked out at Snopes and other hoax buster sites. Just go to www.truthorfiction.com (the best hoax buster) http://www.snopes.com/ or http://hoaxbusters.com
It is really easy to find out if it's real or not. If it's not, please don't pass it on. Let's stop the junk mail and the viruses and protect other peoples privacy by removing their names and email addresses..
Finally - Send this to everyone you know AND REMOVE my Email address first, Please & Thank you!. This is something that SHOULD be forwarded following the rules above.
