Installing with the Debian-Installer

For official Debian 5.0.0 installation media and information, see the lenny page.

If you'd like something newer to help us test a future release of the installer, or because of hardware problems or other issues, try one of these daily built images which contain the latest available version of installer components.

If any of the hardware in your system requires firmware to be loaded with the device driver, you can use one of the tarballs of common firmware packages. Instructions how to use the tarballs and general information about loading firmware during an installation can be found in the Installation Guide (see Documentation below).

Notes

  • Before you download the daily built images, we suggest you check for known issues.
  • An architecture can be (temporarily) omitted from the overview of daily built images if daily builds are not (reliably) available.
  • For CD and DVD images, an MD5SUMS file is available in the same directory as the images.
  • For downloading full CD and DVD images the use of bittorrent or jigdo is recommended.
  • For the less common architectures only a limited number of images from the CD and DVD sets is available as ISO file or via bittorrent. The full sets are only available via jigdo.
  • The multi-arch CD images support i386/amd64/powerpc and alpha/hppa/ia64; the installation is similar to installing from a single architecture netinst image.
  • The multi-arch DVD image supports i386/amd64; the installation is similar to installing from a single architecture full CD image; the DVD also includes the source for all included packages.

After using the Debian-Installer, please send us an installation report, even if there weren't any problems.

We also have an IRC channel, #debian-boot on irc.debian.org. This channel is used mainly for development, but occasionally for support. If you do not receive a response, try the mailing list instead.

Getting Debian

Debian GNU/Linux is distributed freely over the Internet. You can download all of it from any of our mirrors.

If you simply want to install Debian, these are your options:

  • Download a small image file, record it to a CD/DVD/USB disk/floppy, and install using the Internet.

    These small netinst images can be downloaded quickly. These allow you to download only those Debian packages that you actually want, but require an Internet connection on the machine being installed.

  • Download larger CD/DVD image files, record and install using that media only.

    The CD/DVD images can be downloaded using HTTP/FTP, BitTorrent, or Jigdo.

    The large CD and DVD images contain more packages, making it easier to install machines without an Internet connection. However, if you get a whole set of CDs or DVDs, you will get a lot of packages that you won't actually use.

Downloading Debian CD images with BitTorrent

BitTorrent is a peer to peer download system optimised for large numbers of downloaders. It puts minimal load on our servers because BitTorrent clients upload pieces of files to others while downloading, thus spreading the load across the network and making blazing fast downloads possible.

You will need a BitTorrent client to download Debian CD/DVD images this way. The Debian distribution includes Azureus, BitTornado, KTorrent and the original BitTorrent tools. Other operating systems are supported by Azureus, BitTornado and BitTorrent.

The first CD/DVD disk contains all the files necessary to install a standard Debian system.
To avoid needless downloads, please do not download other CD or DVD image files unless you know that you need packages on them.
