Nagios is a powerful monitoring system that enables organizations to identify and resolve IT infrastructure problems - Nagios Overview

I'm trying out a Network Monitoring Tool today. It's an Open Source App, called Nagios. I came across an Article, called How to set up Nagios Remote Plugin Executor (NRPE) in Linux. The name Nagios, sounded familiar to me. I'm sure I have come across it, at some point. Since I started running Linux in 2005. And since I run a Web Server on my Network. I thought I would give it a try. Instead of doing the Command Line Installation, described in the Article. I just went to Package Manager in my Fedora 14 System. And installed, both Nagios and all of the Plugins, by clicking on two boxes in the GUI Package Manager. There's No GUI for Administrating Nagios, that came with these installs, though. So, I opened up a Terminal Window and ran nagios. I don't know any of the commands to work in nagios. And the few examples in the window, were no help to me. I don't like mucking around in the Command Line. When I can just use a nice GUI App to do most anything in Fedora or Debian. And most other Distros that I have tried over the years, as well. I can work, much more quickly and without trying to remember thousands of commands for the various Apps and different Linux Distros, that I use. My memory is not that good, for these types of things... So, then went to the Services GUI App in Fedora. And Enabled and Started it up from there. The How to set up Nagios Remote Plugin Executor (NRPE) in Linux. Shows you how to setup the Config Files for Remote Network Monitoring. "Nagios can monitor the reach-ability of remote hosts, as well as the state of services running on them. However, what if we want to monitor something other than network services for a remote host? For example, we may want to monitor the disk utilization or CPU processor load of a remote host. Nagios Remote Plugin Executor (NRPE) is a tool that can help with doing that. NRPE allows one to execute Nagios plugins installed on remote hosts, and integrate them with an existing Nagios server." So, if your interested in using Nagios. Then the above linked Article, should be a good place to start. I'm going to just let it run on this machine and see what it does on my local network. I don't want to spend allot of time learning how to work with Nagios in the Command Line. So, this may be as far as I go. Still, it looks like a very powerful App for those who don't mind Working and learning the Nagios Commands for the Command Line Administration of Nagios...
