Secure Boot Bootloader for Linux Distributions Available Now

I've been waiting and hoping for this to happen for about a year now. So, this is very good news to me. I've been running Fedora and Debian Linux as my main OS's since 2005. As well as many other Rescue Linux Distros. When I work on Restoring broken Windows Systems and Data Recovery, etc. And I sure didn't want to be stuck using Old Hardware, Forever! Or have to change to a Linux Distro, that I rally don't care for (Ubuntu etc). Fedora has decided to buy keys from Microsoft. So, I'm good there, for now. But, what about all of the other, smaller Linux Distros, that I use??? So, indeed... This is very good news to me!:) I'm a bit behind in finding out. About a month or so. But, that's ok. I'm not quite ready to by that New Hardware yet anyway. Check out and download, mjg59's, Secure Boot bootloader for distributions available now...

Don

mjg59The plan for supporting UEFI Secure Boot in Fedora is still pretty much as originally planned, but it's dependent upon building a binary which has the Fedora key embedded, and then getting that binary signed by Microsoft. Easy enough for us to do, but not necessarily practical for smaller distributions. There's a few possible solutions for them.

  • Require that Secure Boot be disabled

Not ideal. The UI for doing this is going to vary significantly between machines, making it difficult to document. It also means that the security benefits of Secure Boot are lost.

  • Require that the machine be placed in Setup Mode

Clearing the enrolled Platform Key results in the system transitioning into Setup Mode, and from then on new keys can be enrolled into the key database until a new Platform Key is enrolled. Distributions could ship an unsigned bootloader that then writes the distribution keys into the database - James Bottomley has an example here. This means that the distribution can still benefit from Secure Boot, but otherwise has the same downside that the UI for doing this will vary between machines.

  • Ship with a signed bootloader that can add keys to its own database

This is more interesting. Suse's bootloader design involves the bootloader having its own key database, distinct from those provided by the UEFI specification. The bootloader will execute any second stage bootloaders signed with a key in that database. Since the bootloader is in charge of its own key enrolment, the bootloader is free to impose its own policy - including enrolling new keys off a filesystem.

I've taken Suse's code for key management and merged it into my own shim tree with a few changes. The significant difference is a second stage bootloader signed with an untrusted key will cause a UI to appear, rather than simply refusing to boot. This will permit the user to then navigate the available filesystems, choose a key and indicate that they want to enrol it. From then on, the bootloader will trust binaries signed with that key.

mjg59I'm pleased to say that a usable version of shim is now available for download. As I discussed here, this is intended for distributions that want to support secure boot but don't want to deal with Microsoft. To use it, rename shim.efi to bootx64.efi and put it in /EFI/BOOT on your UEFI install media. Drop MokManager.efi in there as well. Finally, make sure your bootloader binary is called grubx64.efi and put it in the same directory.

Now generate a certificate and put the public half as a binary DER file somewhere on your install media. On boot, the end-user will be prompted with a 10-second countdown and a menu. Choose "Enroll key from disk" and then browse the filesystem to select the key and follow the enrolment prompts. Any bootloader signed with that key will then be trusted by shim, so you probably want to make sure that your grubx64.efi image is signed with it.

If you want, you're then free to impose any level of additional signing restrictions - it's entirely possible to use this signing as the basis of a complete chain of trust, including kernel lockdowns and signed module loading. However, since the end-user has explicitly indicated that they trust your code, you're under no obligation to do so. You should make it clear to your users what level of trust they'll be able to place in their system after installing your key, if only to allow them to make an informed decision about whether they want to or not.

To fix or not to fix - EEVblog - Lecroy 9384C Oscilloscope Repair Video

I have an old Oscilloscope in the Garage that wont Power up. It's a Rack Mount Unit and it is allot older than the one in this Video. I bought it in an Audio Video Equipment Auction, 15 years ago, along with some other stuff. A Pro Studio Camera and some 3/4 Video Tape Machines. Most of it worked. But, some didn't. The Oscilloscope, didn't. But, I only paid a few bucks for it. I use to do Audio Video Work and wanted the Oscilloscope for Syncing Video, if it worked, that is. I've kept it, in hopes of fixing it some day. I was excited to see this video from EEVblog today. Cause, I've been wishing that I could fin out how to repair my old Oscilloscope and get some use out of it. I could use it for Electronics Projects too. I don't have another one and can't afford a new one. This is a very interesting video and this guy really knows his Electronics! But, alas, he had to give up on this his Oscilloscope, in the end. Still, just watching this video, alone. Taught me several things about Old Electronics. This is the last video in the series. Check it out...

How to Clean a Coffee Maker

43 authors | 171 revisions | Last updated: December 20, 2012

Drip filter coffee makers need to be cleaned monthly to remove hard water deposits (scale), leftover coffee oils that become rancid, and other impurities. Washing the pot just isn't going to cut it: what about the internal components? Follow these steps to clean your coffee maker through and through and you'll taste the difference.

Edit Steps

  1. 1
Make a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water-- enough to fill the pot. For a stronger solution (which might be necessary if this is the first time you've cleaned your coffee maker since you got it three years ago) make a mixture that is half vinegar and half water instead.

    Here are some alternative mixtures:

    • a pot's worth of water and two denture tablets. Remember to dissolve the tablets in a separate container of water and not the coffee maker water reservoir. Undissolved tablets can make the rinsing process lengthy. [1]
    • dissolve 1 oz of citric acid in 4 cups of hot water, then add 4 cups of cold water to the mixture.[2]
    • store-bought coffee maker cleaners
    • straight bleach (for the glass carafe only) will instantly dissolve baked-on coffee. Never mix bleach and vinegar or any acid; the fumes are poisonous.
    • Do not use baking soda and warm water; this mixture can clog and ruin your coffee maker! You can resolve this issue by running white vinegar through the coffee maker with 75% success rate
  2. 2
Put a filter in your coffee maker, as usual.

  3. 3
Pour the mixture into the coffee maker where you would normally add water.

  4. 4
Turn the coffee maker on and let the mixture run completely through.

  5. 5
    Discard the filter and mixture.

  6. 6
Let the coffee maker sit and cool for 15 minutes while it's off.

  7. 7
    Rinse the coffee pot.

  8. 8
Repeat all of the above a second time, but this time with plain cold water. This will make sure all of the vinegar and water solution is completely gone. If short on time, smell the coffee pot and maker after the first rinse. If there is no smell of vinegar left, you can skip the second rinse.

Edit Tips

  • Instead of a pitcher, you can use the sprayer from your sink to fill the coffee maker without spilling!
  • To clean just the pot, do what many restaurants do. Put about two cups of ice, 1/4 cup of rock or table salt, and 1/4 cup of lemon juice (bottled or fresh is fine) and swirl around the pot. Measurements are not that important, just guesstimate. Be sure that the pot is cold before you try this, or you may break the glass pot.
  • Never use the coffee pot to pour water into the reservoir. This will transfer oils and impurities from the pot, and eventually give the coffee a nasty taste. Instead, use a pitcher that is reserved for water only.
  • A microfiber towel (found in automotive departments) will clean better than paper towels.
  • To keep the inside area around basket, filter, lid area clean (from coffee ground spatter) simply place a second filter over the top of the grounds in the first filter. Push second filter down so that spout will clear top of second filter (on many makes of coffee makers) as lid is closed. This keeps interior in pristine condition and doesn't take much time or expense.
  • Mr. Clean Magic Rub Eraser (not the bathroom one) is a handy item to use to clean coffee residue off the inside of a glass coffee carafe.
  • You can put ice cubes and a little water(enough so you can swirl it around) in pot and swirl them around, for harder stains put some table salt in pot and swirl it around for a few minutes and then rinse.
  • Does your pot have hard to reach areas? Use a wooden chopstick with a paper towel to get in there.
  • For tough stains, scrub the pot using a paper towel or clean (not soapy) dish towel. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Clean a brand new coffee pot prior to using it for the first time.
  • Put a glass marble in the water chamber to attract mineral deposits from hard water. Wash it once a week. [3]

Edit Warnings

  • Never wash the coffee pot with soap. This will bind with the oils deposited by the coffee and will leave a taste behind. Do not wash in the dishwasher for the same reason.
  • Some coffee pots are made of tempered glass (i.e. Pyrex brand). This type of glass is stronger than regular glass but can still shatter and cause injury from the pieces. Never move any glass directly from heat to cold.

Edit Things You'll Need

  • Vinegar and water (or one of the other options outlined)
  • Coffee maker
  • Fresh filter

AjaXplorer File Sharing for Web and Local Network (LAN)

AjaXplorer File Sharing for Web and Local Network (LAN). The interface is very similar to OS-native file Explorers. If you have a LAN or Web Server. You may want to give AjaXplorer a try. There is a running Demo on their Site at (http://demo.ajaxplorer.info/) Check it out...

Don

A modern browser is all that's needed to access AjaXplorer : the interface is very similar to OS-native file explorers, and all users can find their way in it. Users can easily share files or folders over the Internet, preview and edit most common file formats directly online, without having to download/upload the files to/from their local computer.

AjaXplorer is another "brick" that you can install on your web server : you may know Wordpress, Joomla! or other "web-based" softwares. It's the same technology (PHP), and AjaXplorer is normally accessed via an URL such as http://yoursite.com/ajaxplorer/.

AjaXplorer comes fully equiped with a complete users management system, securing the whole installation at once. It can also be interfaced with existing authentication mechanisms, to implement a "Single-Sign On" system and make users life easier.

AjaXplorer interface adapts itself for small screen devices; there is also a native alternative for iOS devices, as well as one for Android devices.

Check the detailed features page

Cloud storage is a growing trend that allows you to access your data from anywhere, with a simple internet connexion, by storing your files on remote servers. But what if you don’t want to entrust the mainstream storage providers (Google™, Dropbox™, Apple™…) with all your data, or if you simply do want to get free from their storage limits ? AjaXplorer is the solution to set up easily your private cloud-storage server. All you need is a web hosting or a « NAS » (a « Network Attached Storage » unit wired to your home or office network), running PHP. Deploy Ajaxplorer on it and you will be able to access your files from anywhere in the galaxy. AjaXplorer is accessed like any website. The rich interface it provides is supported by all major web browsers and allows you to manage your files exactly like you would on your local computer. And if you’re on the go, AjaXplorer adapts its interface to small screen devices, and there is a dedicated iOS application providing the best user experience on iPhone and iPad (Android coming).

This quick-install guide will cover most common cases : you have an FTP access to a remote server running PHP (>5.1) and accessible through the web. If you can log directly on the server via SSH, you will probably know how to skip some of these steps. There is this tutorial for CentOS users written by Mathieu on Argeo’s wiki, as well as specific upgrade instructions if you are coming from an existing installation. Others, well, follow the steps!

1 Download the latest build of AjaXplorer from the download page, and extract its content (using any zip tool like winzip, 7zip, tar -xzf on linux…) somewhere on your computer.
2 Upload the archive content on the server (via FTP) in a web-accessible folder. Make sure that the « data » sub-folder is writeable by the webserver.
For example put it in /your/web/root/ajaxplorer.

3 Access the installation via the web browser : the AjaXplorer Diagnostic Tool is launched and tries to detect problems.
Review any error or warnings then click on « Continue to AjaXplorer ».
The URL may look like www.domain.tld/ajaxplorer/
4 The  »admin » user is automatically created. Log in with the admin/admin credentials and change the admin password now.
AjaXplorer is up and running!
The « Change Password » menu is accessible by clicking on the « Logged as admin » button.

What’s next? You will probably want to create repositories and users right away, but we recommend you the following readings before :

But if you are confident enough, you can jump directly to the Users, Roles & Repositories section.

FireHero 3

FireHero 3 is finally here! Originally built for a music festival, FireHero 3 was designed from the ground up to focus on putting on an incredible live show. Read on to see more pictures and details of the system!

Thumbs up!

And now for some info about the system itself!
FireHero 3 is rebuilt from the ground up. Some of the new features of this version include:
  • A completely revamped fuel system capable of delivering almost 10 times the peak propane output of the previous versions.
  • A new Silicon Nitride HSI-based ignition system.
  • A custom-designed control system complete with an operator's panel, status displays, custom data exchange protocols, and solid-state switching of the solenoid valves.
  • The increase of the normal five effects to six (to accommodate the guitar interface) and the addition of four 40-foot flame effects to the frame (not shown in the current video)
  • The addition of two free-standing flame cannons, each capable of producing 100 foot flames.

A new control system was designed for FireHero 3, from the ground up. I developed a socket-based Ethernet communications protocol and client/server software using Python to exchange information between the control computer(s) and the Raspberry Pi-powered FireHero server. Commands are sent to a multithreaded server running on the Pi, which then controls an Arduino Mega over a 1,000,000 baud serial connection. Interesting note: I was having HUGE issues with note delay times until I bumped up the baud rate to 1,000,000 bps. The Arduino Mega then sends TTL signals to Solid State Relays (SSR), which in turn fire the solenoid valves on 120VAC. You'll notice that the Arduino Mega is sporting an Ethernet shield, which allows it to send back real-time status data of the system on request. A separate control computer pings the Arduino, which responds with the current status of the FireHero system. This includes effect states, current levels on each HSI, the HSI voltage reading, the pressure readings from the digital pressure transducers, and temperature readings from the main frame. All of this data is displayed on a custom GUI at the operator's panel. This software also performs automatic monitoring of the system, with built-in fail safes to initiate a system shutdown in the event of over-pressure or over-temperature readings, a current reading from an HSI that is below a certain threshold (which means that the HSI is dead or dying and un-ignited propane could soon be venting), and over-or-under voltage readings. Also integrated into the system are N.C. emergency stop perimeter switches, which instantly kill the power to the solenoid valves (which fail closed) and initiates a system-wide shutdown. Another interesting note: the operator's panel is protected by keyswitch and RFID, making it impossible for anyone unauthorized to boot up the system without the proper key and RFID tag.
