An odd bit of news from the xorg foundation. During some discussion on their mailing list about missing funds it became apparent that PayPal had simply taken $5k of their money because PayPal thought xorg foundation were some sort of scam.

This has lead to more people boycotting paypal and a general unease about the liberty of financial transactions online.

For me it demonstrates a core corruption in the way our governments tackle law enforcement online. Instead of improving the police and the judiciary so that they can effectively cope with online fraud, copyright infringement and illegal computer entry, the governments are instead creating laws which force service providers to be the police, judge and executioner of punishments.

Everything from this PayPal theft to the infamous three strikes internet connectivity laws currently being discussed in Europe. All of it shows the same disregard for impartiality, fair, open courts with a proper objection process. Instead we can replace courts and police with companies who’s job is providing us goods and services we pay for, so they can’t really be impartial.

Everybody Panic: The Coming Housing Shortage

The U.S. has a real estate problem. It appears we don't have enough homes to put a roof over everyone's heads.

Say what?

That's the warning from housing economist David Crowe, who projects that the number of homes now being built – on pace toward 591,000 homes and 87,000 rental apartments in 2010 -- isn't enough to keep up with an ever-rising American population. He says that the nation will need to build 16 million new homes over the next decade, or more than twice as many as are coming online now, to keep up with demand. Crowe hints that he's not alone in his concern: "Economists are beginning to sound the warning that today's extremely low levels of new residential production could lead to significant housing shortages."

Now, take this with a grain of salt. David Crowe is the chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders, so part of his job is to inspire fear in the hearts of Congress and government officials across the land to do what's necessary to support residential construction, including propping up the comatose Wall Street market in real estate finance.


As I reported in Rented Spaces recently, vacancy rates have hit record highs in many cities. This week, the blog Calculated Risk pointed out that "the supply of rental units has been surging" (check out this chart to see just how much). Right now the Census counts more than one in every ten rental units as vacant. Add in empty homes for sale and those that are just sitting there collecting tax bills, and it adds up to 14.2 million vacant homes in all. That's a long way toward the magic 16 million number.

And meanwhile, Crowe is understandably alarmed about the record low number of home sales reported this January.

Money College: One student's losing battle with private student loans

I will try my hardest to not make this piece a "woe is me" story and more on the dangers of taking out private loans (or any student loans for that matter).

I would first like to clarify that I come from a financially unstable household. I was the first person in my family to go to college, I am an immigrant, and my parents did not put aside money for me to go to college. I went to a private university, and besides Stafford loans, I took out private loans from Sallie Mae. I could not get a co-signer, as no one in my family has good credit, and in hindsight, I should have probably gone to a cheaper college or a community college (and gotten a degree in something other than English).

The Sallie Mae Student Signature Loan looked like a good option at the time because I didn't need a co-signer and there was no cap on how much I could borrow. I didn't have anyone to talk to about financial matters and I didn't ask for help, either (not even a quick Google search), another bad decision. Private loans cannot be consolidated, something I did not know, and had I known, I would have changed my education plans entirely.

I moved off campus the first chance I got, and I worked full- or part-time, depending on my class schedule. In total, I borrowed approximately $43,000 from Sallie Mae, with an average interest rate of 9.5%. As of today, I have already accrued $22,525 in interest (on $43,000!), and the estimated total amount to be paid should I follow the monthly payment plans will be $123,350.

Texas Show Car Association

The Texas Show Car Association would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2010 Forth Worth MotoRama featuring Texas finest cars, motorcycles and trucks.  We also have many vendors exhibiting and selling everything from photos, jewelry, shoes, clothing, polish and almost everything car and motorcycle related.

This year's show will be March 5-7, 2010.  Move in will be Wednesday, March 3rd and Thursday, March 4th.

Friday night, “Greg Bell and the Rumble Kings” will be on stage at 7:30. On Saturday “The Last Band Standing” will perform at 1:30pm and again at 7:30pm.  John Roberts, one of our directors, will be doing double duty again this year.  John not only will be performing his show duties but he will also be our DJ playing all your favorite oldies.

Jim Rowlett, our judging director, will have a short church service beginning at 10:30am on the main stage Sunday morning.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  Trophy presentation will begin at 4:30pm on Sunday on the main stage.

The Christian Classic Cruisers will be our host club again this year.  We can't say enough good things about this great group of men and women.  They do everything at our show, from selling and taking tickets, watching our doors, laying out the building, placing chains and stanchions, etc. You will recognize them in their Christian Classic Cruisers white and maroon logo'd shirts.

Once again we will have the Ft. Worth police as our security.  Police officers will be in the building 24 hours a day from move in until the show closes on Sunday night.

For those of you new to Ft. Worth, the Amon Carter Exhibit Hall of the Will Rogers Complex is located at 3401 W. Lancaster Ave.  From downtown go 2 miles west on Hwy 30 to the University Drive exit.  Go north on University for 1 mile to Lancaster Ave.  The Will Rogers Complex is on the left.

Again, thank you for being part of this great car show.  Without you there would be no show.  See you there!

A month ago, Jason Calacanis went on a rant about why everyone should boycott comScore. He felt they were using sketchy tactics to bully people into their pay-to-play model for measuring web analytics. He also noted that their free competitors like Quantcast, Google, and Compete would soon eat their lunch. Both Quantcast and Google (Analytics) offer direct counting of pageviews (but even these methods can be abused). But you may wonder how exactly Compete gets its numbers? It appears, that some sketchy tactics are (or at least were) employed, as well.

We were recently pointed to this post from last month by Ben Edelman, a Harvard privacy advocate. In it, he details the data the Upromise toolbar collects and sends out. This toolbar is used by college students looking for savings on various items across the web, and can be quite useful. But until a few weeks ago, it appears they were also sending web browsing (and more personal) data to Compete without anyone’s knowledge. Writes Edelman:

How do I connect to a remote Windows 7 desktop from a Linux machine?

Although most administrators do their work within a Windows environment, there are times when an administrator will want to (or have to) connect to a remote Windows machine from within a Linux machine. Now most administrators are used to doing this from within Windows. But from within Linux it is a different story.

There are plenty of Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) tools available for Linux that allow you to connect to just about any platform, but for our purposes, we will be connecting to a Windows 7 desktop from an Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. But we’ll make this a bit more complicated. Since “the cloud” is all the rage, we will make this Linux-to-Windows connection with the Windows 7 instance being served as a virtual machine from a different Ubuntu Server using VirtualBox.

In order to make that connection a little easier to understand, let’s map it out with a diagram (Figure A).

The Windows 7 desktop is served up by the Ubuntu Server via VirtualBox 3.0.

Now that you can see a visual representation, the connection should be easy to figure out.

For the purposes of this document, I am going to assume:

• You have a working Ubuntu Server.
• You have VirtualBox working on your Ubuntu Server.
• You have Windows 7 installed on VirtualBox.
• You have a working Ubuntu desktop.

The above issues are simple to resolve. There are a few others that might not be so obvious, so we’ll discuss those here.

Recently I wrote an article “How Do I Connect to a Remote Windows 7 Desktop from a Linux Machine” and was asked to show how to do the same trick — the other way around. You might assume this trick to be a challenge. You will be surprised how little of a challenge it really is.

But first off, you might be asking yourself “Why would I need this?” The answer is to use a single point of administration. How many times have you scurried around computers to try to resolve a problem only to have to waste time going back and forth. With the previous article, you were given the means to connect from Linux to Windows. Now, with the ability to connect from Windows to Linux, you have all you need to make administrating from a central location much easier. And with that said, let’s get on with the setup.

Google executives convicted by Italian court

In a verdict that is likely to have ramifications for content providers around the world, an Italian court found three Google executives guilty of privacy violations in connection with a video posted on YouTube showing an autistic teenager being bullied.

The three defendants convicted–Peter Fleischer, David Drummond and George De Los Reyes–received suspended six-month sentences.

David Drummond, the chief legal officer at Google and one of the men convicted said,

“If individuals like myself and my Google colleagues who had nothing to do with the harassing incident, its filming or its uploading onto Google Video can be held criminally liable solely by virtue of our position at Google, every employee of any internet hosting service faces similar liability.”

Even though the offending video was removed from YouTube as soon as it was brought to Google’s attention. Legal counsel for Google said that it would be impossible to screen all videos and content and expects the verdict to be overturned on appeal.
