The Conscience of a Hacker (also known as The Hacker Manifesto) is a small essay written January 8, 1986 by a computer security hacker who went by the handle (or pseudonym) of The Mentor (born Loyd Blankenship) - YouTube Video

This video, is a talk, given by. The author of, "The Conscience of a Hacker" (aka "The Hackers Manifesto") by "The Mentor", written in 1986. I found it very interesting. And fun to see the writer, all grown up and talking about it and how it has effected his life and others, as well. I must confess... I never really knew what the "Hackers Manifesto", really was or what it said, in it. I have seen it referenced to, on one of my favorite Web Sites, (http://hackaday.com/). And other places, as well. I don't consider my self, a "Hacker". Although, I've used a Hack Saw, on many occasions. In my day. We, would say... I just Hacked it Together. Thus, the original use of the word "Hacker" (as far as I know). Were referenced to, a Hack Saw. Being used, to cut up something. To make it, into something else. Such as... Not, building something "From Scratch". But, "Hacking", one or several things together. To make something, somewhat new and different. Or for a different Purpose. Also, usually meaning. I didn't go to allot of trouble, on this Project. To make something new, from scratch. I just, "Hacked it Together"... So, when the kids of the 1980's. My, kids. Started referring to doing something on a Computer, as "Hacking". I found it, kind of comical. And I thusly, teased them about the use of this word, "Hacker". In reference to a Computer. Yes, I was late, in becoming interested in Computers. I always, loved. Electronics, Building and Making things. But, the first time, I saw a DOS Based PC, in 1975. The year I graduated High School. At a Career Fair, that the School was putting on. I thought... I could never remember all of those Commands! That you need to run this thing. And I told, the guy, who was demonstrating the PC, as much. He tried to convince me. That the Home Computer - PC. Was the next big thing. And that it was going to change the world. And there would be plenty of High Paying Jobs, available soon, in this Field. If I would just go to the School. He Represented and learn about them. I figured, he might be right. But, then again. That's what they all say... About their new Tech and Coming Trends... Besides, I wanted to become the next, Big Daddy - Don Garlits! I wanted to be a Professional Drag Racer and Hot Rod Builder. No, I didn't make it... Right after High School. I Promptly got Married and began raising kids and working for "The Man". But, a bit later on in life. I did, finally learn a bit about Computers. My first exposure to Windows 3.1, was in 1992. I took right on to the "Windows" interface. No commands that had to be typed, exactly and correctly and remembered. And I learned how to make Address Books and Drew a few Digital Pictures. A while after, that I played around on the Internet, a little bit, on that same Win3.1 PC. But, there was not much that interested me, there, at the time. That's about as far as I went. Until, I got access to a computer Computer, with AOL Dial-Up Internet. That I could use, pretty much any time I wanted. By this time, 1998. The Internet, had grown, to the point. That I could Research most anything, that I was interested in. And my love for music and writing. Could all, done and made on a Computer. I liked to write songs and poems. And had done some Singing and Recording, with some friends who were musicians, over the years. Now, with the advent of .Wav, .MP3 and Real Audio, File Formats. I could both listen to and share my music, Online. By, this time I was Hocked. And I'm still learning and using my Computers, most ever day. To this day. I discovered the Linux OS, in 2005. And have completely immersed my self into Free and Open Source Software, since them. Most anything, you want or need to do, with a Computer. Is Freely Available, with Open Source Software! So, about being a "Hacker". Well, I still can't type accurately enough or remember all those lines of code. So, I'm not a Programmer, Coder or a "Hacker". And I do respect other Peoples Privacy. I have no desire to get in trouble for Snooping into Someone Else's Computer. I do like to try and keep up with Computer and Internet Security. As much as I can. Since, I run a Home Web Server, of my own. With my Web Sites on it. So, that I can share my music, with the World (http://donsongs.com/). And other things, that interest me, (http://bishopco.com/)on this Blog. It's Amazing, how much Information, that there is out there on the Wild Wild Web. And I'm so glad, that it's all there. Tor us (I mean For us) to freely share info and educate with each other....

Saturday, July 13, 2002: 3:00 pm (Area "A"): Probably the most famous single essay about what it's like to be a hacker is "The Conscience of a Hacker" by The Mentor, written in 1986. It's been quoted all over the place, including the movie "Hackers." It remains one of the most inspirational pieces written about the hacker community and it's survived well over time. This year, we're pleased to have The Mentor himself give a reading of it and offer additional insight.

What Is Docker? An open platform for distributed apps

I've been seeing Web Headlines, about Docker, allot more lately. I know, I've read about it in the past. But, it's been a while. So, I decided to look into it, a bit more...

"Docker represents a different model for virtualization than the traditional hypervisor virtual machine (VM) approach that VMware's ESX, Microsoft's Hyper-V, Xen and the open-source Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) technologies employ. With a traditional hypervisor, each VM needs its own operating system. However, with Docker, applications sit inside a container that resides on a single host OS that can serve many containers." Read more at: http://www.eweek.com/virtualization/docker-to-gain-new-ground-in-2015-after-taking-center-stage-in-2014.html

Here's some info I found, on the Docker Web Site...

Docker is an open platform for developers and sysadmins to build, ship, and run distributed applications. Consisting of Docker Engine, a portable, lightweight runtime and packaging tool, and Docker Hub, a cloud service for sharing applications and automating workflows, Docker enables apps to be quickly assembled from components and eliminates the friction between development, QA, and production environments. As a result, IT can ship faster and run the same app, unchanged, on laptops, data center VMs, and any cloud.

Solomon Hykes, Docker's Founder & CTO, gives an overview of Docker in this short video (7:16).

Commands and info, on installing Mate, KDE and Gnome 3 Desktops, in Fedora 21 Linux Server Addition

This page has the commands and info, on installing Mate, KDE and Gnome 3 Desktops, in Fedora 21. More links below, too...

The Mate group install command, (yum groupinstall "MATE Desktop"). Got errors and did not work, on my Fedora 21 Server. When working in the Terminal. Directly on my freshly installed and updated Fedora 21 Server. But, the command listed below, yum install @mate-desktop (after logging in as "root"). Is working, right now. On my New Fedora 21 Server install, (01-05-14).

Update...

But, after the Mate Desktop installation. Upon Reboot. I had no, GUI Login Screen. just the command Prompt. So, tried the command, "startx". But, just got some help info (No GUI). I tried, the command "wizard". Which works on many other Linux Distros. When the X Server Needs to be Setup. But, no joy. So, I got tired of messing with it, for today. I will do some reading and see what else is needed to configure the Mate GUI Desktop, on Fedora 21 Server...

Install Other Desktop Environments

The default desktop interface for Fedora 21 Workstation is Gnome Shell, if you don't like Gnome, you may install any other interface you want.
Fortunately, many famous desktop environments such as Mate, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, etc.. are available for download from the official repositories, to install any of these desktops just run the following command.
Install Mate Desktop
$ sudo yum install @mate-desktop
Install KDE Desktop
$ sudo yum install @kde-desktop
Install XFCE Desktop
$ sudo yum install @xfce-desktop
Install LXDE Desktop
$ sudo yum install @lxde-desktop
Install Cinnamon Desktop
$ sudo yum install @cinnamon-desktop

GNOME

GNOME 3.12

GNOME has been updated to the upstream release 3.12.
The release features improved support for HiDPI across the GNOME Desktop components.
The Totem video player has been renamed to Videos.
The Gedit text editor has been redesigned to feature a more compact interface.
The release also includes new applications, such as:
  • GNOME Logs: A systemd journal viewer.
  • GNOME Sound Recorder: A simple utility for audio recordings.
  • Polari: An IRC client.
Other feature improvements include support for Google Cloud Print, Windows Live email, and a new terminal search provider for GNOME Shell.
For more information about the release, read the GNOME 3.12 Release Notes at https://help.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/3.12/.

GNOME Software

The GNOME Software application installer (the gnome-software package), which was first introduced in Fedora 20, is now more integrated in the system and provides additional functionality. Notable new features include:
  • Installing application add-ons is now supported.
  • High quality metadata, such as screenshots, are now offered with many applications, allowing you to gather more information before installing a package.
  • The installer has been turned into a session service, which allows it to check for available system updates automatically even when the application itself has not been launched by the user. This functionality was previously provided by the gnome-settings-daemon service.
  • The application is now much better integrated into GNOME Shell:
    • Available system updates are now offered in the Power Off dialog.
    • Non-installed packages can now be displayed among search results when using the integrated search function.
    • You can now right-click an application icon in the shell overview and select Show Details from the menu to obtain information about the application.
  • You can now create and customize application folders using the application installer.
  • The tool now starts up much faster and provides a more responsive interface due to the switch from the YUM backend to the one provided by the DNF project.
See the Application Installer Continued wiki page for more information.

Wayland support previewed GNOME

The transition of GNOME to Wayland continues in Fedora 21. In particular, GNOME shell is being changed to run as a Wayland compositor instead of an X11 compositor. Other components of GNOME which currently talk directly to the X server, such as gnome-settings-daemon or gnome-control-center, will be ported to corresponding Wayland interfaces. Most GTK+ applications will continue to work normally using the existing Wayland backend.
Applications that make use of X-specific APIs continue to be supported using the xwayland X server, which is started on demand. gdm supports both Wayland-based sessions and X-based sessions.
Important
Proprietary driver support in Wayland is less complete than under X. Systems that have been configured to use proprietary drivers under X will fall back to using open-source drivers under Wayland. Addionally, support for alternative input devices such as Wacom tablets or joysticks may not be available in time for Fedora 21.
For additional information about Wayland in general, see the official documentation. The Wayland page on the GNOME wiki provides information relating specifically to Wayland in GNOME.
Try out Wayland and GNOME in Fedora 21 by installing the *gnome-session-wayland-session* package and choosing the Wayland session when logging in.

MATE 1.8

The MATE desktop environment in Fedora has been updated to version 1.8. The updated version brings a number of visual and functional changes, such as new applets and extensions and support for UPower 1.0. The default sound mixer has been switched from GStreamer to PulseAudio. MATE now also uses the Yelp help browser, which fixes issues with broken links in help pages.
Many packages which are part of MATE were either renamed or replaced.
A full list of changes is available on the MATE 1.8 wiki page and the MATE 1.8 release announcement.
To install MATE, use the yum groupinstall "MATE Desktop" command, and then select MATE from the menu the next time you log in.

KDE

KDE 4.14 and SDDM

The KDE Applications 4.14, which is the version to be included in Fedora 21, have already been made available to users of Fedora 20 through the Updates repository. However, the KDE spin of Fedora now uses SDDM as its new default display manager. KDM, which was the default display manager on Fedora 20 and earlier, is still available for installation from the Fedora repositories.
To return to using KDM, install the kdm package using the following command:
~]# yum install kdm
Then enable the service using the following command:
~]# systemctl enable --force kdm.service
