Re: What I would really like to do is get a tape deck and hook it up to my PC.

Well, I would suggest starting with, Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
I have used it and it is allot like the Old Gold Wave Freeware Version, but a little more powerful I think...

But there are more good Open Source projects coming out all the time.
Here's what cam up on Google...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=open+source+audio+software&btnG=Search

Here's a good site that I found in my Google RSS Feeds from  my Google Home Page... I see allot of good looking articles on there... Gizmo's Best-ever Freeware
http://www.techsupportalert.com/

I would either save the recorded files as .wav of .MP3 on my computer and then Burn them to the CD's as a Standard CD format, like .cda if possible. If your Burning software can't do that... then you could use MP3 which should play in most newer CD Players or I have a Nero Express Install CD you can Borrow. I think it is on my Server too...

As far as the Tape Deck... I'm guessing you mean a Cassette Deck, not a Real to Real or A-Dat or VCR;) Which would all be viable music storage options... The only big difference in Cassette Deck Performance as a Copy From Deck, that I have noticed in the last 10 years. Is that the cheaper Decks don't usually go down to the bottom of the sound frequency spectrum that Cassettes are capable of... like 30hertz or so... So, if you wan to get the full sound off the original Factory Cassette. The you will want to use a fairly decent Cassette Deck. That doesn't mean that you will need a TEAC WR-600 like mine... I actually used a Battery Powered Portable Walk Man Style Cassette Player to Transfer my DonSongs Album Music to my old 486PC, when I made my first Master CD for DonSongs 002. Not by choice, but because I didn't have the money to even buy the TEAC that I have now... Basically an new mid grade Cassette Player will do the Job. Just look at the Specs and make sure it will Reproduce the Frequency's you want to hear and that the Distortion Rating is not too high. I can't ever remember the good and bad of all that. I just compare the best to the worst and then go form there when I'm shopping... It can get pretty time consuming transferring Tapes or Albums to PC in Real time. But it's worth it, if you like the music well enough, to spend the time. Back in the day, when I was Mixing for Bands... I had a full Mackie VLZ and a 32 band EQ in a Rolling Rig that a friend let me bring home for a while... I hooked up my old 70's Turn Table and Restored and Re-EQ'd my old Christmas Albums from the 30's, 40's and 50's. I still have that Cassette somewhere! With Bing Crosby, Perry Como and  cool old Artists Like that, all on one long Cassette:)

What I would really like to do is get a tape deck and hook it up to my pc.  Place my tapes in the deck and transfer it to my hard drive and then burn it to a CD.  I know how to hook it up to my pc.  Out from Deck inline on pc.  Now what software would I use?

What format would a tape be considered?  MP3 or WMA?  I would want it to play on my cd player in my car.

What type of Tape deck should I look for??

Ya, pretty cool, for a DJ Scratcher... Kind of expensive though. I think for that money, I would buy a Laptop and use some Open Source Software such as Hydrogen (actually mostly a Drum Machine) and others like it...

open source dj software - Google Search
I haven't tried these, but looks like plenty out there... and for Windows too...
