Bill Warns Internet Providers To Store Info
Posted on: February 8th, 2007 | CommentRepublicans introduced yesterday a “law and order agenda” under legislation that would require all Internet service providers to track their customers’ online activities to assist police in future investigations. The bill warns Internet providers that if they fail to store that information, they face fines and up to one year in prison.
A 1996 federal law called the Electronic Communication Transactional Records Act requires Internet service providers to retain any “record” in their possession for 90 days upon request of the government. The U-S Department of Justice could confiscate those records forever.
Republican Lamar Smith of Texas described it as an essential anti-cyber crime measure. “The legislation introduced today will give law enforcement the tools it needs to find and prosecute criminals.”
