How to Pick the Perfect Essential Circuit Generator

Think about it. Your house is already built.

You already have a customized electrical system installed by a professional electrician.

The main electrical panel is configured with circuit breakers already in place.

Why so many breakers?

Simple. To protect your home from an overload.

If one circuit overloads, the whole house doesn’t shut down -- just the overloaded circuit. Essential circuit standby generators operate the same way.

Since small, air-cooled generators don’t generate enough power to run the entire house, there’s no point in supplying power to your entire electrical panel. Otherwise, you run a good risk of overloading the system.

To make things extremely simple, Generac standby generators come equipped with pre-wired automatic transfer switches.

Each transfer switch has a different number of pre-wired circuits. The number of circuits vary, depending on the size of the generator.

The more powerful the generator -- the more circuits you can power – the more circuits you get.

In addition, the circuits come in different sizes. Some are small 15-Amp (120 volt) breakers. Others are powerful 50-Amp (240 volt) breakers.

Now, Step Away from the Computer?

Selecting your essential circuits is extremely simple if you just get up and look.

Go to your main electrical panel and pick (a) how many circuits you want to power and (b) the size of each circuit.

FIRST: Print Out Our Handout

For example, most refrigerators are pre-wired on their own 15-Amp (120V) circuit. If you want to energize that circuit, label it and check the corresponding box.

Repeat the process until you’ve chosen all of the circuits. When you’re finished, simply go to the next page and fill in the blanks.
