6.3 Earthquake Devastates Christchurch. Would You Know What to Do in an Earthquake? (blog)

The earthquake that just struck New Zealand’s second largest city has killed at least 65 people, with the death toll increasing as the search for survivors continue. More than 100 people are thought to still be trapped.

This catastrophe trails a 7.1 earthquake last year (followed by a mine explosion that killed 29 workers) and a series of aftershocks.

Have you ever been in an earthquake? Would you know what to do to increase your chances of surviving? Here are some tips, please share yours in the comments:

  • Ask an out-of-state family member or friend to serve as a central contact (and maybe you can be their contact too). Make sure everyone memorizes this person’s phone number. Don’t rely on cellular phones or radios for contact. From How to Prepare for an Earthquake
  • Get next to a sturdy piece of furniture. Ignore the common urban belief that standing under a doorway will save you. Also ignore the myth that sheltering under a heavy piece of furniture will save you. Instead, go right next to any sturdy furniture. If a wall falls, it will create a crawl space, also called a void space. It will save you if you are in a collapsed building, and most survivors are found in a void space. If the furniture you’re hiding behind moves during the quake, move with it. From How to Survive an Earthquake
  • If a power line falls on your car, stay inside. A trained professional will need to remove the pole to minimize the chance that you might be electrocuted. Equally, do not attempt to touch or get into a vehicle that has fallen power lines on it. From How to Survive an Earthquake in Your Car
