Tips and Tricks
By default, GNOME presents files and folders in an easy to learn, easy to use manner. There are also a number of useful extra features, for those who want a little more. The most important one of these is Browser Mode, which is discussed in the next section: (((Browser Mode))).
Usually, files are laid out as a field of icons, but you can also get more detailed information, presented in a table. From the View menu, choose View as List.
Some files are hidden, according to naming conventions. Backup files end in a tilde "~", and special system files (such as your web browser bookmarks) start with (or are in folders that start with) a dot ".". You will not normally need to open these files, but if you do, you can view these files by using the View → Show Hidden Files menu item.
Like all other GNOME programs, the Edit → Preferences menu item offers a number of options (organized into a number of tabs). One such option is Single click to activate items under the Behavior tab, which makes the file manager behave like a web page, in that you only click once to open a file or open a link. In which case, you will have to use Ctrl and click to select, or use the drag rectangle method.
If you liked the list view (mentioned above), then you can also make it apply to all folders in the Edit → Preferences dialog.
Root Nautilus
You can use Nautilus as root by hitting Alt+F2, enter
- gksu nautilus
and you can now use file manager as root.
