Take Advantage of New Simplified Cisco Wireless Routers - PCWorld Business Center
By Tony Bradley
Cisco today unveiled two new wireless router lines aimed at simplifying
the process of configuring a wireless network for home, or small and
medium office environments. The new wireless routers attempt to provide
PC users with a wireless experience mirroring Apple's Airport devices.
Cisco is an enterprise-grade company, with enterprise-grade equipment,
and its used to working with enterprise partners. Its consumer offerings
have left a little to be desired. After acquiring Pure Digital
Technologies, makers of the popular Flip digital video cameras, Cisco
has learned some new tricks for designing simplified, dummy-proof,
almost automatic configuration--and it has applied those lessons to its
consumer wireless routers.
The Valet series of devices are aimed primarily at home users, but Cisco
also developed the Linksys E-series wireless routers--combining the
simplicity of the Valet series with some additional configuration
options for more tech savvy customers. The Linksys E-series wireless
routers are available as of today from standard retail outlets...
The Cisco press release says "The new, streamlined product lineup sets a
new precedent for simplicity, power, and performance and makes it easy
for consumers to find the right technology to fit their needs."
Here is a breakdown of the features and suggested price for each of the
four Linksys E-series wireless routers from the Cisco press release:
Read more... Their not cheap, but have some good features, like built in
USB for Hard Drive accessible over the Internet...

How to Get Rid of Fleas Naturally - wikiHow
Ever heard of any of these?
- 4Use yeast as a weapon. Supposedly, fleas don't like the taste of yeast. Although this has not been proven, many people swear by it. Purchase some brewer's or nutritional yeast and rub it onto your pet's skin. You can also sprinkle a small amount onto their wet food and mix it in.
- Feeding your pet garlic is thought to have the same effect, but it can be irritating or even toxic to your pet, so use yeast instead.
- 5Make a citrus spray. Citrus oils allegedly repel fleas, but they may also repel your pets, and irritate them if they ingest them, so use this solution with care. Slice a lemon thinly, add to a pint of water and heat to the boiling point. Let it sit overnight and in the morning, spray it onto areas where you suspect fleas hang out (beware of staining) and rub it over your cat's fur. Don't soak but dampen the fur. Do this once a month to combat fleas. Do not use a lot at first, and keep an eye out for signs of digestive discomfort in your pet.

Lucid Dreams and Death By Techno
26/03/2010 7:02 pm
Marcel Gagné
Hello, everyone. My name is Marcel and I'm a technology addict.
I stand before you today, naked (figuratively speaking, of course), laying my deepest, darkest, secrets out for all to see. You see, I love technology. All kinds of technology. Computers. Televisions. Cars. Smart phones. Computer programs. Airplanes. Linux distributions. Keychains with tiny screens to display family photos. Bluetooth headsets. Satellites. Video games. Coffee makers. Spaceships. Remote controlled toy helicopters. High speed networks. Model rockets. Timepieces. Microwave ovens. You get the idea. I've always felt that the problem isn't too much technology, but too little and insufficiently advanced technology. I'm also a believer that really, really great tech is what's going to save us and propel us to the next stage of human evolution. I love looking at new technology. Touching new technology.
Trying out new technology. I am forced to admit that I may have a problem.

Simple Linux Backup Software
-
The Simple Backup Configuration Program (SBCP). This wizard asks you a few simple questions about what to back up, where to back it up, etc. It records these answers in some configuration files and sets up automatic backups for you.
-
The backup script, bkup. This shell script actually performs the backups based on the options you set in SBCP. It has no user interface – it is meant to be run automatically by the Linux scheduler, cron, or manually from a command line.
You might be wondering, “What’s a script?” It’s just a small program – it just happens to be constructed from (in this case) Bash shell commands.

rdiff-backup: Main
rdiff-backup
A remote incremental backup of all your files could be as easy as
"rdiff-backup / host.net::/target-dir"[disclaimer]
What is it?
rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another, possibly over a network. The target directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs are stored in a special subdirectory of that target directory, so you can still recover files lost some time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an incremental backup. rdiff-backup also preserves subdirectories, hard links, dev files, permissions, uid/gid ownership, modification times, extended attributes, acls, and resource forks. Also, rdiff-backup can operate in a bandwidth efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup and ssh to securely back a hard drive up to a remote location, and only the differences will be transmitted. Finally, rdiff-backup is easy to use and settings have sensical defaults.

Mumble | Open Source Alternative - osalt.com
Mumble 1.1
Mumble is voice chat software that can be used by any type of group but is tailored for gamers who enjoy chatting while gaming. It has an ingame overlay for DirectX9 and OpenGL based games and shows clearly who is speaking even when using full screen applications. This is a feature that most chatting software lacks and is what gamers have been asking for.Gamers have had concerns about delays with other chat software. This presents a major problem when a gamer is asking advice and needs a quick response. Mumble has a much shorter delay and better implementation of Speex than most other software. In fact, it is based on the new Speex codec that has significantly lower memory needs and much better sound quality. Since it doesn't demand so much memory, gaming is smoother and the chatting process doesn't interfere with the game play.
Mumble comes with plug-in support to positional audio in games and also has a plug-in for Battlefield 2, one of the most recently popular games. The installer has Mumble as the client and the server Murmur. Murmer is the server that insures secure communication and full extensibility. It also has voice preprocessing and low latency that removes noise and improves voice clarity. The Murmur server delivers quality that is superior to many chat applications currently in use.
Mumble supports a number of popular game title including Battlefield 2, Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 2 and 4, and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

LMMS | Open Source Alternative - osalt.com
LMMS 0.4.5
Linux Multimedia Studio (LMMS) is a free DAW (digital audio workstation) created for Linux & Windows. Although it has a rather steep learning curve, there are many tutorials and it includes several sample songs that you can learn from. Users learn the functions pretty quickly once they go through a few of the examples.
LMMS allows the user to create and produce music by synthesizing sounds, arranging samples and playing on a MIDI keyboard. Features include trackers, sequencers, synthesizers and a beat/bassline editor. It also has a song editor to help organize materials into larger forms and a piano-roll window to aid in writing MIDI parts.
This DAW also lets you add effects to pre-existing audio so that you can record something and import it as a sample. You can add filters, distortion or any other effects you like and then make the whole file one track. By creating samples in the same composition program you can save a lot of time that you would normally waste by copying it between multiple programs.
The piano roll previously mentioned allows easy editing by clicking on the right pitch at the right time and clicking to insert the note. The note value can easily be changed by resizing it with the mouse.
One drawback of LMMS is that it has no "undo" function anywhere in the program. That can be quite frustrating but as you learn the program better you probably won't miss it.
LMMS come equipped with four different synthesizers. There is one that allows manipulation of samples by adding filters and a BitInvader plugin that is a wavetable synthesizer, allowing you to create a waveform for your sound. There is a guitar synthesizer and one with three oscillators. Most of LMMS's controls are understandable but you can get guidance by right clicking and selecting the "help" option.

Mind mapping is the new approach to preparing big projects or organizing functions among a group or just helping you get things done in a timely manner. XMind is an open source program that helps generate ideas, visualize concepts and classify ideas. You can use your maps privately or share them online and get input from your colleagues or co-workers.
XMind is easy to use and it has a tabbed interface that lets you open several maps at a time. A sidebar tells you all the details about the map that you select. There are several useful templates or you can create your own concept map. XMind supports notes, images, hyperlinks and files so you can express your concepts clearly and completely. Merely double click to edit topics or create them anywhere on your map. You can organize your topics with moving markers, drag and drop or by adding attachments. Need to research a topic? You can Google it without leaving your work window and even drag images into your map.
XMind is compatible with MindManager and FreeMind, too, so you aren't limited in your communications. You can even use it to make a presentation, filtering all the information with markers and labels. Your audience will be able to focus on a central point or be able to understand and visualize an entire idea. You can even use the audio notes to record voices as separate attachments. Drupal | Open Source Alternative - osalt.com
Drupal 6.2
|
Organizations that need content management will like Drupal's effective security, support infrastructure, scalability, customizable permissions and user roles. Images and other media are supported as are comments. Organizers can easily share ideas, use the preconfigured tools for community management and the self-organizing features.
Small business owners can set up their own site, customize its style and layout and change it as their business grows. Drupal has e-commerce support for shopping carts and paid-content subscriptions. The permissions don't require that each person be authorized; permissions can be assigned to roles which in turn can be assigned to a group, saving time and simplifying collaboration.
Website designers and builders enjoy the ease of creating their own themes and providing client support. Access to designer/developer communities is a real asset. Programmers like the modular system that can be customized and extended, access to developer communities, system and architecture documentation and coding standards.
Drupal has many other unique features, such as a collaborative "book" that others can contribute to. URLs are both user and search engine friendly and online help is available to you on your own site. All content is fully indexed for the built-in search module.

Administrators will like the wizard that allows them to create a site with one of several HTML templates. Typo3 uses Typoscript, a scripting that offers many tools to access data easily and quickly. It also has a tool to make your own extensions called Extension Kickstarter. While it may take awhile to learn all the aspects and uses of Typo3, making a basic site is simple and there are many tutorials available to help. This CMS allows restricting and limiting usage to certain users and groups very easy and is rich in security features.
Content editors can learn to use Typo3 in as little as 30 minutes! It can run on Windows, Linux or Mac and is compatible with most browsers. Text editing is done using familiar Office icons; Typo3 features a rich text editor and WYSIWYG editors as well as the ability to add or remove buttons and styles. There is a spell checker built in and help icons beside most of the functions. Typo3 also displays file management functions in a directory-tree format so that content editors can locate pages and files easily and quickly. The intuitive user interface saves time and aggravation as well.
Typo3 rivals most commercial systems in quality and ease of use. With so many CMSs available, it can be difficult to choose among them but Typo3 will quickly convince you that you've made the right choice.

Google stops censoring in China, creates "China dashboard"
Google stops censoring in China, creates "China dashboard"
by Erez Zukerman (RSS feed) Mar 22nd 2010 at 4:32PM
That's it; the deed is done -- Google stopped censoring results for China. As of this morning, users trying to access google.cn are redirected to google.com.hk, where Google provides uncensored search results. They use geolocation to figure out when a connection is from the mainland, and provide results in simplified Chinese. Users connecting from Hong Kong will keep getting results in traditional Chinese.
Google will still maintain R&D and Sales presence in China, but the size of the sales team will "be partially dependent on the ability of mainland Chinese users to access Google.com.hk".
They have also created a new dashboard page, where the whole world (or human rights activists) can see at a glance which Google services are being blocked by China at any given day. Gutsy indeed.
I don't know about you guys, but this move wins Google major points in my mind. I am all for free speech, and I think it's rare for a company to put its money where its mouth is. Kudos.

2010: Semiconductors In Audio
2010: Semiconductors In Audio
Permanent linkAfter the invention of the transistor in 1947, semiconductors began rapidly supplanting the electron tube for all but the most specialized uses (yes, like in some of your favorite analog gear). Today’s high-powered computing ICs incorporate transistor counts besting a million per square millimeter. Individual transistors and their integrated circuit brethren form the building blocks of most of today’s audio devices, be they analog or digital, simple amplifier stages or processing blocks.
Each year, Pro Sound News queries audio design engineers about their semiconductor usage. This year’s respondents are B.J. Buchalter, VP R&D at Metric Halo; David Eltzroth, President and CEO of ROX Electronics; Tony Gambacurta, Sr. Engineer at Whirlwind Music Distributors; Director of Product Strategy for Focusrite, Rob Jenkins; Patrick Quilter, Senior Audio Designer at QSC Audio Products; David Thibodeau, VP at Daking Audio; and Tonelux Designs President, Paul Wolff.
An abridged version of their replies ran in the March, 2010 issue of Pro Sound News; the unabridged replies follow. Where there’s no reply for a given respondent, the question was either considered not applicable, or, in some cases, the answer would have given away future plans for new products (one respondent requesting we get back to him next year when he’ll tell us what all his company’s new products have inside).

How To Easily Track Your Website Visitors
By: Dave TaylorMarch 22nd, 2010
I don't have a blog, I don't have a fancy Web site and I don't have a profile on MySpace or Facebook, but I do get people coming to my simple little four-page Web site and I'd like to learn more about them. My sister says I want to run some "analytics" program, but I'm clueless. I can edit HTML, but what do I add?
Dave's Answer:
You are right to be thinking of this stuff. Without some sort of decent analytics it's just about impossible to know who is coming to your site and what they do once they get there. Add one of a number of different free packages, however, and you can extract a surprising amount of information by just poking around when you have the time.
Since you're comfortable with basic HTML, you also have a bit of a proverbial leg up on most folk because you can easily copy and paste the necessary Javascript into the correct spot on your pages without freaking out or breaking things. :-)
So there are a lot of different analytic programs on the market, but what I like is Google Analytics. It's free, it's powerful and it's fast enough loading that there's no performance penalty for your visitors (a big issue in my book). You can sign up for free, but you probably already have a Google account so it's even easier. Find out, go to Google Analytics and sign in / sign up.
Here's what it looks like when you "create new profile"

Popular FF add-on AdBlock Plus blocking "Spread Firefox" images
by Lee Mathews (RSS feed) Mar 21st 2010 at 1:00PM
The Firefox Extension Guru blog noticed that -- for some reason -- updates he was making on his web sites weren't displaying for some reason, at least not in Firefox. When loading pages in Chrome he could see the edits. After a little digging, he found the cause: AdBlock Plus had blacklisted the particular element he was adding -- a "Spread Firefox" banner.
Oh, the irony.
Well, All I can say is... If it weren't for all these "advertisers" putting up so many Blinking, Irritating and Bandwidth Stealing Adds.... Bandwidth that I pay a pretty penny for, I might add! If it weren't for people taking a good thing, Free for the user, Advertising Paid Sites and turning them into nothing but an aggravating eye soar that gives people Seizures! There would never have been a need for things like AdBlock Plus. These "advertising" tactics have never sold me anything. I have just learned to ignore them over the past 12 years. Once upon a time I did click on an interesting add or two, back int the early days... But none of this stuff is anything but aggravating and Bandwidth Thievery now days!:O AdBlock Plus... thanks for being there for us users!:)

Easy (and amazing) Debian for the N900.
By the time you read this my Nokia N900 will be packed up and on its way back to the kind folks who let me test it. As a last hurrah I spent my evening yesterday seeing how far I could push it; the results are fairly spectacular…
I had read previously about installing .deb files using something called “red pill mode“; this is no longer possible, but in its place is a fantastic app called Easy Debian which does exactly what its title would suggest .
Easy Debian is basically a virtual machine for your N900. It doesn’t require a dual-boot like Wubi, and is instead a full Debian desktop OS that runs as an app and won’t interfere with anything else on your device — except for available storage space.
Ok, So... If you're like me. You are thinking, sounds cool. But, what's an M900 and how much does this thing Cost??? Well, the link in this article took me to an Amazon Page with... Nokia N900 Unlocked Phone/Mobile Computer with 3.5-Inch Touchscreen, QWERTY, 5 MP Camera, Maemo Browser, 32 GB--U.S. Version. I was listed for $524.54!:O Now, I don't even have a LapTop yet! So, Ya... that's not the kind of phone I can afford. Must be nice to have money to burn!:O I'm wondering what about all these old Mobile Phones everyone has around. Can't we load some kind of Linux on them and make them good for something again??? DonRead more...

Broadcast Yourself
Around the globe, YouTube has become a metaphor for the democratizing power of the Internet and information. YouTube gives unknown performers, filmmakers, and artists new ways to promote their work to a global audience and rise to worldwide fame; makes it possible for political candidates and elected officials to interact with the public in new ways; enables first-hand reporting from war zones and from inside repressive regimes; and lets students of all ages and backgrounds audit classes at leading universities.
Yet YouTube and sites like it will cease to exist in their current form if Viacom and others have their way in their lawsuits against YouTube.
In their opening briefs in the Viacom vs. YouTube lawsuit (which have been made public today), Viacom and plaintiffs claim that YouTube doesn't do enough to keep their copyrighted material off the site. We ask the judge to rule that the safe harbors in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (the "DMCA") protect YouTube from the plaintiffs' claims. Congress enacted the DMCA to benefit the public by permitting open platforms like YouTube to flourish on the Web. It gives online services protection from copyright liability if they remove unauthorized content once they’re on notice of its existence on the site.
With some minor exceptions, all videos are automatically copyrighted from the moment they are created, regardless of who creates them. This means all videos on YouTube are copyrighted -- from Charlie Bit My Finger, to the video of your cat playing the piano and the video you took at your cousin’s wedding. The issue in this lawsuit is not whether a video is copyrighted, but whether it's authorized to be on the site. The DMCA (and common sense) recognizes that content owners, not service providers like YouTube, are in the best position to know whether a specific video is authorized to be on an Internet hosting service.
Because content owners large and small use YouTube in so many different ways, determining a particular copyright holder’s preference or a particular uploader’s authority over a given video on YouTube is difficult at best. And in this case, it was made even harder by Viacom’s own practices.
For years, Viacom continuously and secretly uploaded its content to YouTube, even while publicly complaining about its presence there. It hired no fewer than 18 different marketing agencies to upload its content to the site. It deliberately "roughed up" the videos to make them look stolen or leaked. It opened YouTube accounts using phony email addresses. It even sent employees to Kinko's to upload clips from computers that couldn't be traced to Viacom. And in an effort to promote its own shows, as a matter of company policy Viacom routinely left up clips from shows that had been uploaded to YouTube by ordinary users. Executives as high up as the president of Comedy Central and the head of MTV Networks felt "very strongly" that clips from shows like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report should remain on YouTube.
Viacom's efforts to disguise its promotional use of YouTube worked so well that even its own employees could not keep track of everything it was posting or leaving up on the site. As a result, on countless occasions Viacom demanded the removal of clips that it had uploaded to YouTube, only to return later to sheepishly ask for their reinstatement. In fact, some of the very clips that Viacom is suing us over were actually uploaded by Viacom itself.
Given Viacom’s own actions, there is no way YouTube could ever have known which Viacom content was and was not authorized to be on the site. But Viacom thinks YouTube should somehow have figured it out. The legal rule that Viacom seeks would require YouTube -- and every Web platform -- to investigate and police all content users upload, and would subject those web sites to crushing liability if they get it wrong.
Viacom’s brief misconstrues isolated lines from a handful of emails produced in this case to try to show that YouTube was founded with bad intentions, and asks the judge to believe that, even though Viacom tried repeatedly to buy YouTube, YouTube is like Napster or Grokster.
Nothing could be further from the truth. YouTube has long been a leader in providing media companies with 21st century tools to control, distribute, and make money from their content online. Working in cooperation with rights holders, our Content ID system scans over 100 years worth of video every day and lets rights holders choose whether to block, leave up, or monetize those videos. Over 1,000 media companies are now using Content ID -- including every major U.S. network broadcaster, movie studio, and record label -- and the majority of those companies choose to make money from user uploaded clips rather than block them. This is a true win-win that reflects our long-standing commitment to working with rights holders to give them the choices they want, while advancing YouTube as a platform for creativity.
We look forward to defending YouTube, and upholding the balance that Congress struck in the DMCA to protect the rights of copyright holders, the progress of technological innovation, and the public interest in free expression.

Biggest 747 ever built takes its maiden flight
The biggest plane ever built in the U.S. has taken to the air. This Boeing 747-8 freighter prototype flew its maiden test flight, proving that a plane that's even longer than that huge Airbus A380 can actually fly.
After Boeing cranks out a few cargo versions, this plane that weighs about as much as 5,100 fat American guys will be built in a passenger version. Those lucky enough to have a window seat will be able to peer out of peepholes that are 8% larger than those on today's 747s.
President Obama might soon be flying in one too. Boeing is urging the Air Force to get rid of its old 747 VC25s and instead use one of these behemoths as Air Force One.

Internet Explorer 9 adds HTML5, drops Windows XP | DVICE
Internet Explorer 9 adds HTML5, drops Windows XP
Good news for fans of Microsoft's in-house browser (but bad news for folks who still use XP): the next iteration of Internet Explorer adds a slew of attractive features, and gets ready for a more attractive web overall.
The good news: Internet Explorer 9 will add support for HTML5, which really is a no-brainer considering it'll be one of the new standards on the net, and allow for the browser to run more complicated video and graphical elements. IE9 is also getting hardware acceleration, meaning more resources to work with for a speedier browser overall. A new JavaScript engine will do the same, making sites such as Gmail more responsive.
The bad news: XP users are going to be left behind, as Microsoft has made it official that IE9 will not support Windows XP.
You can try out an early test build of IE9 for yourself here.

Unfolding briefcase-laptop is perfect for secret agents
We may not get the name — "Playing By Heart" — but we're definitely down with the concept. Zhang Shouze's svelte laptop folds into a briefcase when you're in transit, and unpacks into a laptop when you need to use it. Unfolded, its legs even act as a stand, a thing a lot of people use these days to improve laptop ventilation. You also benefit from not having to lug a laptop bag around if you don't want to, as this thing turns into its own case.
Again, don't get too excited: this thing's just a concept — and that's definitely a bummer.

Kaboom! Large Hadron Collider triples its own world record | DVICE
Kaboom! Large Hadron Collider triples its own world record
The only thing better than claiming a world record is utterly smashing it, and that's exactly what the Large Hadron Collider did this morning in Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC previously managed to reach an energy of 1.18 TeV. I guess I should be embarrassed I ever reported that as news, because that was apparently small potatoes: the LHC has pretty much tripled that previous benchmark and is now circulating beams at a whopping 3.5 TeV.
"Getting the beams to 3.5 TeV is testimony to the soundness of the LHC's overall design, and the improvements we've made since the breakdown in September 2008," CERN's director for accelerators and technology, Steve Myers, said in a statement.
So not only is the Large Hadron Collider the world's most powerful particle accelerator, but now it claims that crown several times over. This probably isn't the accelerator's peak, either, as when it first started up before that fateful, catastrophic leak it was capable of pushing into the 5 TeV spectrum.

Cardboard package magically morphs into record player
Sound engineering company GGRP wanted to show off its audio and cleverness chops, so it went primitive, taking a leap of creativity with this cardboard packaging that turns into a record player.
Embedded in one of the box's edges is a needle, and when you place the enclosed record on the embedded spindle, it's a simple matter of inserting a pencil into a hole in the middle of the record and turning it.
There you have it — scratchy sound just like in the Victrola days, and a successful promotion that you won't soon forget. Brilliant.

Lawn Mower Scooter makes weekend chores more fun
Mowing the lawn is the biggest downside to having a lawn. It's a tedious, sweaty affair, one that takes valuable time away from relaxing. But what if you combined lawn mowing with something fun, like riding around on a scooter? Brilliant.
Sure, this thing is just a concept right now, and it's basically a more cutesy version of a riding lawnmower that is probably far less effective at actually cutting the grass than a more traditional model, but come on! It's a scooter that cuts grass!

When we first heard about Airship Ventures, a company that's resurrected the Zeppelin for air tours of San Francisco and other locations, we said: Sign us up! Well, the company took us seriously, giving us a free ride on one of their airships for a quick flight around the Bay Area (such a ride typically costs about $500). The result: some top-notch sightseeing, and the only flight we've ever taken when it was okay to open a window on the aircraft. It's all caught by our trusty camcorder — experience airship travel via the video and continue reading for the full story on the Zeppelin.
