Loud's stealth PR campaign for
Mackie Onyx-i mixers included
boxes such as this, sent to
specific members of the media.
New York (December 14, 2009)—Following months of industry speculation,
Avid has officially licensed Mackie's Onyx-i mixers with work with Avid
Pro Tools M-Powered 8 software.
Last summer, Mackie debuted its Onyx-i line of mixers with a stealth
publicity campaign that indicated it had found a way to circumvent
Avid's hardware protection that links Digidesign/M-Audio systems to
M-Powered DAW software. The resulting software solution--the Mackie
Universal Driver—debuted at AES to great interest, and also worked with
other DAWs, including Apple Logic Pro, Cakewalk Sonar and Steinberg Cubase.
In the wake of the new agreement between Avid and Mackie's parent
company, Loud Technologies, users will need to purchase the Mackie
Universal Driver upgrade ($49.99 USD) at Mackie's website to enable use
of Pro Tools M-Powered 8 with Onyx 820i, 1220i, 1620i and 1640i mixers.
