* Date: July 27th, 2009
* Author: Bill Detwiler

When Windows Vista was first released, many early adopters complained of
device driver incompatibilities with older hardware. Since then, most
hardware vendors have released updated, Vista compatible drivers, but
unfortunately even updating your drivers doesn't always put a stop to
erratic driver behavior. In this IT Dojo, I'll show you two handy tools
that can help you solve those pesky Vista driver problems–Driver Query
and DriverView.

Linux Today - Get started with HomeBank

Get started with HomeBank
Jul 30, 2009, 15 :34 UTC (0 Talkback[s]) (413 reads)

"You see, we work hard for our pay cheques - well, some of us work
harder than others - and we spend money on groceries, utilities and,
ahem, fun Fridays. But keeping track of what's coming in, when the bills
are due and how much is left after the recurring monthly expenses is not
something that many of us make the effort to do. It's time-consuming and
boring and there's always that episode of 24 that you'd rather be watching.

"If you take the time to master some good home accounts software -
such as HomeBank or one of the other great apps we featured in our home
finance software group test - you'll find these accounting chores much
less painful. Read on!

"HomeBank is available in the software repositories of most
distributions. If you're running Fedora or Ubuntu, it's only a su -c
"yum install homebank" or sudo apt-get install homebank command away.
You can similarly install it on Debian, OpenSUSE, Mandriva and Arch
Linux using their native package managers."

Free Utility Can Remove Annoying Nag Screens

Free Utility Can Remove Annoying Nag Screens

It's not uncommon for free versions of commercial programs to flash up a nag screen suggesting you upgrade to the paid version.  Well here's a free utility called ClickOff that may kill off some of those annoying nag screens for you.  It won't work in every instance but is sure worth trying.

The program works in several ways:

1. It can simply close a window that you don't want
2. It can press a particular button in a window
3. It can enter text into windows then press a button

Draw Plans and Diagrams Online

Draw Plans and Diagrams Online

Brought to you by the people who created AutoCAD, Project Draw lets you draw, layout or diagram just about anything.

Project Draw can create diagrams, floor plans (home and office), diagram furniture placement - just about anything that you would need a sketch or layout for.
Using Project Draw is fairly easy, with a drag and drop interface, a basic shapes feature, and uncluttered toolbars that can insert images, add text, and add color. You can download and save your creations to your computer, and if you work offline, it has an offline mode.
To save diagrams to your computer, you'll need to use the Export Diagram feature under the File menu. Your diagram is sent briefly to a server, after which a window appears allowing you to save your diagram to your computer in any of these formats: MMD/FMD (editable), JPEG, PNG, SVG, PDF, DWF(alpha) or DWFx (alpha).
Saving diagrams on the Project Draw server requires free registration.

Unbeknownst to many users, Firefox has a whole host of application
settings (called preferences) that aren't found under the regular
Options or Preferences interface. These preferences, both hidden and
not, are stored in a prefs.js file. Prefs.js is a plain text file
located in the Firefox profile folder. You could edit the file using a
text editor, but there's an easier and somewhat safer way. In this IT
Dojo video, I'll show you how to access and modify Firefox's hidden
preferences using the browser's about:config feature.

The 10 most useful Linux commands | 10 Things | TechRepublic.com

Maybe the command line isn't your favorite place to hang out, but to be an effective Linux admin, you need to be able to wield a few essential commands. Jack Wallen says these 10 are guaranteed to simplify your Linux admin life — and he explains why.

I understand that many of you don't want to use the command line in Linux (or in any operating system, for that matter). But the truth is, to be a good administrator, you have to know the command line. Why? Well, with Windows there are times when the command line is the only thing that can save your skin. With Linux, the command line is vast, reliable, flexible, fast… I could go on and on.

And of the 2,119 possible commands from the /usr/bin directory (in Mandriva Spring 2008) and the 388 possible commands from /usr/sbin/, a few are indispensable. Here are 10 of them that might make your Linux admin life — or your introduction to Linux — a whole lot simpler.

I could make this easy and go with the most used commands (cd, ls, rm, etc — okay, etc isn't a command, but you get the point). But instead, I am going to go with the most useful commands, and I'll keep it as distribution-neutral as I can.

Watch out for one of these Comments or E-mails

Watch out for one of these Comments or E-mails coming to your MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter or any of your Social Networking Accounts. It will most likely lead you to a Trojan Virus or something even worse!:O Luckily I was suspicions, when I got one as a MySpace Comment and e-mailed my friend that is was claiming to have come from and he never sent it to me!:) The e-mails below are in reverse order, so the actually scam comment is the last one. But I think you can get the picture from reading them...

Don

That's what I was afraid of... I thought it was odd for you to send me an e-mail on MySpace and I have read recently about e-mails and App or Game invites being sent out to FaceBook and Tweeter Members by Hackers claiming to be a friend, but actually leading you to Trojan Viruses!:) So, guess what! Looks like You're MySpace Account has been Hacked!:O You might want to get in touch with their Admin and let them know so they can put a stop to your user name being used for this. Otherwise the next friend of yours who gets one of these may not be so vigilant and may loose some data or money!:)

Where were you when Apollo flew? - Cosmic Log - msnbc.com

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN APOLLO FLEW

On July 20, 1969, I was an Iowa farmboy watching every black-and-white move of a fuzzy-looking, spacesuited figure on our living-room television set. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson was doing pretty much the same thing in New York City (though he was a mere 10 years old, four whole years younger than I was).

Sen. John McCain was sitting in a Hanoi prison - and wouldn't even find out that someone landed on the moon until a year and a half later. But for millions and millions of people around the world, even for McCain's Vietnamese captors, the Apollo 11 landing and that "one small step" on another world was a red-letter day that would be remembered through the decades.

Import bookmarks - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

This page has info on Importing your Favorites (Windows Internet Explorer) or your Bookmarks into Firefox.

From Internet Explorer

On Windows, Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey will automatically import Internet Explorer "Favorites" when first installed and (in Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey 1.x) whenever you create a new profile.

You can manually import your IE Favorites but you have to first use Internet Explorer to export the Favorites to a file, then use the Mozilla Suite SeaMonkey or Firefox Bookmarks Manager to import it.

To export your IE Favorites to a file

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to "File > Import and Export...", then click Next.
  3. Select "Export Favorites", click Next, click Next again (unless you only want to export a subfolder of your Favorites, in which case, select that subfolder now).
  4. Click "Export to a File or Address", click "Browse" to choose a location such as the desktop (or accept the default location) and save the file, which is named "bookmark.htm" by default.
  5. Click Next, then Finish to complete the export.

After you've finished exporting your IE Favorites to a file, use the Mozilla Suite or Firefox Bookmarks Manager and import the file.

What will Google's Chrome OS watch you do? | Webware - CNET

I like the Google Search Engine. But Don't think I'll be  using their New OS!:O Here's Why...

What will Google's Chrome OS watch you do?

Google has a long history of tracking user activity, and the introduction of its Chrome operating system later this year is sure to follow suit. While we know that it's being built off of Linux, one big thing we don't know is how its terms of service will differ from those found in other Google products, and what kinds of user data it will be collecting. Based on the company's track record of watching and monetizing user data, it could be anything from which applications you're using, to all the information that's coming in and out of your computer.

To provide a better picture on what to expect, let's take a look at some of the ways Google is currently monitoring user activity in a handful of its products and how that may trickle down into the OS:

PharmacyChecker.com: About Online Pharmacies

About Online and Mail-Order Pharmacies:
What You Need to Know

 BENEFITS AND RISKS:

Using an online or mail-order pharmacy (referred to below as online pharmacy) can save you a great deal of money and provide other benefits. However, there are also potential risks.

BENEFITS:

  • Lower prices — Lower drug prices in other countries, lower overhead costs compared to bricks and mortar pharmacies, and lower price mark-ups by discount and wholesale pharmacies often result in savings compared to local pharmacy prices. You can quickly shop around for the lowest prices online. Click here to compare prices across online pharmacies.
  • Privacy/Anonymity — You may feel more comfortable purchasing or asking questions online (or by fax or phone) regarding certain medications. However, privacy can be compromised if an online pharmacy uses your information for unauthorized purposes so it is important that the online pharmacy has an appropriate privacy policy; this is one of the things that PharmacyChecker.com checks for you.
  • Access to more generics — Due to differences in patent protection, generic drugs may be available outside the U.S. for drugs only sold as brand name versions in the U.S.
  • Convenience — If you find it physically difficult to make it to the pharmacy, live in a remote rural area, or have a very busy schedule, online and mail-order pharmacies enable you to avoid travel and can save you time.
  • Medical information — Some online pharmacies provide useful information about medications and diseases as well as links to medical resources such as universities, government agencies, and health associations.

RISKS:

  • Some online pharmacies do not dispense drugs through licensed pharmacies. It is essential that you use pharmacies that are licensed. Licensed pharmacies are inspected on a regular basis and require the presence of licensed pharmacy personnel. Purchasing drugs from an unlicensed pharmacy greatly increases your chances of buying counterfeit and/or substandard products. PharmacyChecker.com verifies that a site is, or fills orders with, a licensed pharmacy.
  • Some online pharmacies do not adequately protect your personal and financial information. It's important for an online pharmacy to include a privacy policy, one that promises not to share your personal information with third parties. Online financial transactions should be secured by the online pharmacy through adequate encryption technology. PharmacyChecker.com's verifies whether privacy is promised and transmittal of financial information is secured.
  • Some online pharmacies do not give their address and/or telephone number. If in the course of purchasing drugs from an online pharmacy you have a problem, question, or complaint, it becomes very important to contact the company using its telephone number or address. PharmacyChecker.com verifies contact information and provides it in the Profile of each online pharmacy listed on this site.
  • Additional fees are typically added to the drug price. There is almost always a shipping fee and there may also be a medical fee, order fees, and/or an account set up fee. PharmacyChecker.com shows you these fees and compares total costs. Compare drug prices at http://www.pharmacychecker.com/ListingAlpha.asp.
  • Prices can change quickly. online pharmacies are continually changing their prices. Lowball prices are common in order to attract new customers, but these prices don't always last. PharmacyChecker.com regularly updates all prices.
  • Some online pharmacies don't adequately safeguard your health. By failing to require a prescription, some online pharmacies might send you medication that could be dangerous to you. PharmacyChecker.com verifies that online pharmacies require a prescription.
  • Some online pharmacies may sell medications that can be extremely dangerous, if not taken under medical supervision. In the U.S., these drugs are known as controlled substances, such as hydrocodone, valium, or xanax. See U.S. laws on importing drugs below for more information about controlled substances. For a list of controlled substances go to http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/scheduling.html . Other drugs, known as restricted distribution drugs, such as such as Accutane, Mifeprex or Thalomidare, while not controlled substances, are also very dangerous if taken without the appropriate medical supervision. For a list of these drugs see: http://www.fda.gov/oc/buyonline/consumeralert120902.html.

To help protect you from risky websites, PharmacyChecker.com checks for you whether online pharmacies are licensed, offer security and privacy of your information, provide an address and phone number, require an original prescription and your medical information. It also finds out whether online pharmacies charge added fees and periodically updates prices to help you can find the lowest drug prices.

In addition, PharmacyChecker.com maintains a list of Rogue Pharmacy Websites; sites that do not follow safe online pharmacy practices and from which we strongly recommend you never order.

Britney

I was driving up to the ski mountain and as the NYC radio stations started to fade to static, I pressed seek in search of something new. I came across a song called "Britney" by Norman Bebo. Call it Christian Rock if you want, but the story of Britney is as compelling as any story of the bible and the lyrics of the song are about as honest as songs get. We let grown men dress up a 15 year old in a Catholic school uniform to sell sex under the guise of innocence. We laughed when the innocence couldn't be sold anymore at the Crossroads. We thrived of tearing her apart as she could not longer make sense of the fishbowl world into which we confined her.

Britney I'm sorry for this cruel cruel world
We sell the beauty but destroy the girl

Backup plan to get NASA to moon cheaper

It won't be as powerful, and its design is a little dated. Think of it as a base-model Ford station wagon instead of a tricked-out Cadillac Escalade.

Officially, the space agency is still on track with a 4-year-old plan to spend $35 billion to build new rockets and return astronauts to the moon in several years. However, a top NASA manager is floating a cut-rate alternative that costs around $6.6 billion.

A message from the Writer / Director / Actor - Solomon D. Rothman

Jathia's Wager is a no-budget Sci-Fi film created by a collaboration of strangers. Copy this film, distribute it, and give it away all you want - it's 100% free and I hope you like it. Most of the people involved (including the actors and the sound designers) only know me through our e-mails and online discussions. They learned about the project entirely online and joined the team, because they love movies and wanted to contribute.

An Open Source Movie?

Like open source software, this film is free, was released with the files used for its creation, was created using a collaboration of strangers, and you're strongly encouraged to modify it, expand it, and use it in your own derivative works.

Everything from the script, to the unedited video footage is available for downloading and using in your own creative endeavors. Fifty percent of the movie was filmed using green screen backgrounds. There are lots of opportunities for continuation of the story and continuing the project. If you really liked this film, you're encouraged to contribute or support it by sharing it with your friends.

Freedom is not Free for Countries nor Computer Users – The ERACC Web Log

Freedom is not Free for Countries nor Computer Users

Do you run GNU/Linux? Participate in our poll.

Today is the day that the United States of America celebrates Independence Day. We declared ourselves free from England's rule and started a Revolution to create a country based on truly revolutionary ideals. The ideal that all people are created equal in the sight of God and no one is above another in God's eyes. The ideal that people have unalienable rights given to them from God, not from government. The ideal that people have the right to abolish an out of control, despotic government to replace it with one more amenable to the people. These unprecedented ideals had never been set forth in writing to form any other nation until the beginning of the United States of America. Yes, we did win our freedom but it was not freely given to us. Men pledged "… to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor." and went to war to win this freedom.

To remain free we in the USA still must be ever watchful of government, maintain a standing military and keep up with advancing military practices and hardware. We must all be educated in the ideals laid out by our country's founders. We must all learn how our government should work and make sure it does not fall into fascism or despotism. We must make certain that our Constitution is not diluted and sullied by those who loathe it for the restrictions it places on their ambitions of power and control. Thus our freedom comes at a price and these are the costs of having that freedom.

Is it correct to compare the freedom of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) to the freedom gained from the Revolution of the States? In some ways it is not. No one has yet had to die in a war to win freedom to use FOSS. As far as I know God does not guarantee any unalienable rights for free software. But in other ways the comparison is appropriate. Some people have to give their time, talent, and in some cases money to create free software for everyone to use. These people are the founders, the statesmen and the warriors that give us all the opportunity to have and to use FOSS. This is one cost of FOSS. Then there are "we the people" the users of free software. These users must take the time to study, learn to use and share their knowledge of the FOSS that is so generously created and given by others. This is the cost of having FOSS for the end-user.

True freedom requires one to make an effort to be liberated and to stay liberated. Therefore freedom is not free. Even though freedom has a cost it is always worth the price in this author's humble opinion.

YouTube - Sarah Palin's Resignation Press Conference

Here's a video of just her News Conference announcing her Resignation.
That's sad... I haven't heard any of that stuff. I'll try and see what
I can find, probably tomorrow... I remember looking up her church and
seeing her in a video there. She was revisiting for an anniversary
celebration. That's when I realized that she was a real Christian and
seemed to have a great heart. I doubt that she has converted to a
Cult!:O But you never know what people might end up doing in life... She
has been hit so hard by the Devil-Media and so many lies have been told
about her and her family. I think we need to keep praying for all of
them...

Zumastor Linux Storage Project

Zumastor Linux Storage Project

Zumastor Logo Zumastor is Free software that adds enterprise storage features (primarily improved snapshots and remote replication) to Linux.

You can read all about it in the Zumastor Howto. The current release is 0.8, which adds several bugfixes (in particular, replication between x86 and x86_64 hosts now works) and experimental native Hardy packages.

Prebuilt Debian/Ubuntu packages are available at zumastor.org/downloads/releases.

Zumastor development is hosted at zumastor.googlecode.com.

Other documents

Kernel Patches

Zumastor requires a few kernel patches. These are online at http://zumastor.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ddsnap/patches/ and http://zumastor.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/zumastor/patches/. The most interesting patches are:
  • Dan Phillips' bio throttling patch, part of how we prevent deadlock during memory pressure. See lkml discussion from 6 Dec 2007 and coverage at LWN.NET.
  • Dan Phillips' PR_SET_MEMALLOC/PR_SET_LESS_THROTTLE patch, other part of how we prevent deadlock during memory pressure. (Any user app that's in the block writeout path needs to be written very carefully to avoid memory recursion deadlock; in particular, it should probably use mlockall, never allocate any memory while handling a write request (modulo a few KB of Heisenslop), and it should set PF_LESS_THROTTLE|PF_MEMALLOC using prctl, as provided for by this patch.) (Mixed in with the ddsnap stuff for now, sorry; ignore everything but the changes to include/linux/prctl.h and kernel/sys.c.)
  • NFS suspend patch, part of how we make new snapshots available via the NFS server as they arrive from remote sites

Linux Today - Editor's Note: Freedom is Not Embarrassing

Editor's Note: Freedom is Not Embarrassing
Jul 3, 2009, 00 :04 UTC (4 Talkback[s]) (418 reads)

(Other stories by Carla Schroder)

by Carla Schroder
Managing Editor

This Saturday is Independence Day in the US, celebrating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which was the colonies' farewell to King George III and British rule.

Those were more dramatic times than now, with people risking their lives and taking other great risks for the cause of independence. But one thing has not changed, and that is the eternal fight between freedom and tyranny. The contemporary version is much less bloody, and more sneaky and insidious. It's big businesses invading our personal privacy in every way they can get away with, and buying and selling our personal data with no oversight or accountability. We don't even get a cut of the swag. It's the erosion of our civil liberties, aided and abetted enthusiastically by business in pursuit of profits, no matter how unethical. It's the manipulation and ruination of the courts, for example the insane unchecked litigation by the RIAA that has brought ruin to so many people, and the never-ending SCO saga. It is absurd that these weiners should have so much power for destruction and obstruction. In a sane world their top executives would spend their weekends in the stocks in the public square, being mocked and pelted with offal.
