Under our Skin | An Infectious New Film

I just happened to see this Documenter on PBS and was amazed at how Close the Symptoms and Stories of the People in the film "Under our Skin" are to my own, since 1983! That's when I first started having health problems. I have had a long struggle, trying to get help and a definite diagnosis ever since. For the last couple of years. I was thinking that I might have Parkinson's Disease. I knew about Lyme Disease and was even tested back in the early 80's. But my Lyme Test came up negative. So, I forgot all about Lyme Disease. I was Diagnosed with Seizures (this diagnosis comes and goes with each new Neurologist I see, because it doesn't always show up in an MRI). I was also diagnosed with Diabetes and Hypertension (which I do have for sure). But after over 27 Years! I still have found no help for my worst symptoms. I wont go int them now in detail... But, they are very similar to what these people have in the film. Except, I don't have allot of pain, thank the Lord! Check out "Under our Skin"...

IDSA aims to censor UNDER OUR SKIN TV broadcasts

Open Eye Pictures has recently learned that the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) has been trying to stop the television broadcast of its award-winning documentary on Lyme disease, UNDER OUR SKIN. Working behind the scenes, IDSA officers and members have been contacting the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA), and local PBS stations, calling our film “dangerous for viewers” and full of “conspiracies.”
The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) was created in 1967 to “provide a voice for groups in the community that may otherwise be unheard,” and serve as “a forum for controversy and debate” by broadcasting programs that “help us see America whole, in all its diversity.”
We are heartened that no PBS affiliate station has folded under the pressure. UNDER OUR SKIN is the first televised documentary dedicated to educating the public about the plight of Lyme disease patients, who have been abandoned by the medical establishment, in part, because of the IDSA’s flawed Lyme guidelines development process.

Connecticut Attorney General's Office
Press Release
Attorney General's Investigation Reveals Flawed Lyme Disease Guideline Process, IDSA Agrees To Reassess Guidelines, Install Independent Arbiter
May 1, 2008
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today announced that his antitrust investigation has uncovered serious flaws in the Infectious Diseases Society of America's (IDSA) process for writing its 2006 Lyme disease guidelines and the IDSA has agreed to reassess them with the assistance of an outside arbiter.
The IDSA guidelines have sweeping and significant impacts on Lyme disease medical care. They are commonly applied by insurance companies in restricting coverage for long-term antibiotic treatment or other medical care and also strongly influence physician treatment decisions.
Insurance companies have denied coverage for long-term antibiotic treatment relying on these guidelines as justification. The guidelines are also widely cited for conclusions that chronic Lyme disease is nonexistent.
"This agreement vindicates my investigation -- finding undisclosed financial interests and forcing a reassessment of IDSA guidelines," Blumenthal said. "My office uncovered undisclosed financial interests held by several of the most powerful IDSA panelists. The IDSA's guideline panel improperly ignored or minimized consideration of alternative medical opinion and evidence regarding chronic Lyme disease, potentially raising serious questions about whether the recommendations reflected all relevant science.
"The IDSA's Lyme guideline process lacked important procedural safeguards requiring complete reevaluation of the 2006 Lyme disease guidelines -- in effect a comprehensive reassessment through a new panel. The new panel will accept and analyze all evidence, including divergent opinion. An independent neutral ombudsman -- expert in medical ethics and conflicts of interest, selected by both the IDSA and my office -- will assess the new panel for conflicts of interests and ensure its integrity."
Blumenthal's findings include the following:
  • The IDSA failed to conduct a conflicts of interest review for any of the panelists prior to their appointment to the 2006 Lyme disease guideline panel;
  • Subsequent disclosures demonstrate that several of the 2006 Lyme disease panelists had conflicts of interest;
  • The IDSA failed to follow its own procedures for appointing the 2006 panel chairman and members, enabling the chairman, who held a bias regarding the existence of chronic Lyme, to handpick a like minded panel without scrutiny by or formal approval of the IDSA's oversight committee;
  • The IDSA's 2000 and 2006 Lyme disease panels refused to accept or meaningfully consider information regarding the existence of chronic Lyme disease, once removing a panelist from the 2000 panel who dissented from the group's position on chronic Lyme disease to achieve "consensus";
  • The IDSA blocked appointment of scientists and physicians with divergent views on chronic Lyme who sought to serve on the 2006 guidelines panel by informing them that the panel was fully staffed, even though it was later expanded;
  • The IDSA portrayed another medical association's Lyme disease guidelines as corroborating its own when it knew that the two panels shared several authors, including the chairmen of both groups, and were working on guidelines at the same time. In allowing its panelists to serve on both groups at the same time, IDSA violated its own conflicts of interest policy.

Learn About Lyme

Lyme Disease Is No Walk In The Park - You May Have It And Not Know It
Lyme disease is a bacterial spirochete (organism) transmitted by ticks. The name of the particular bacteria is Borrelia Burgdorferi. Many people do not know how widespread the Lyme and other tick-borne disease epidemic is and the high odds that someone they know may be affected. Please take a few moments to read the following facts that demonstrate the seriousness of the disease and how it can be prevented.
Misdiagnosis
Estimates state that only one out of every ten cases of Lyme disease is reported and that many people are misdiagnosed. State health departments reported 28,921 confirmed cases and 6,277 probable cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2008. The number of cases reported annually has increased nearly 25-fold since national surveillance began in 1982.
Lyme disease may be difficult to diagnose because many of its symptoms mimic those of other disorders. In addition, the only distinctive hallmark unique to Lyme disease, the "bulls eye" rash, is absent in almost half of the people who become infected. The inadequacies of today's laboratory tests make proper diagnosis difficult, and it can be extremely troublesome to treat the infection in its later phases.
Lyme and tick-borne diseases can attack virtually any system in the body. Some of the first symptoms may include a flu-like condition, with fever, chills, headache, stiff neck, achiness, and fatigue. Other symptoms can include pain in various joints and muscles, neurological problems, heart involvement, problems with vision or hearing, migraines, low-grade fever or other symptoms. Lyme disease is often mistaken for other illnesses since the symptoms often mirror other medical problems, such as multiple sclerosis, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus or Alzheimer's disease. In some cases, Lyme disease patients can become paralyzed and/or comatose. Lyme disease symptoms may come and go and be replaced by new symptoms. Symptoms may be subtle or pronounced.

Nina Arianda, a Rising Star in ‘Born Yesterday’ - NYTimes.com

I just happened on this Story today and have never seen or heard of this girl before. I watched the Video clip and she is great!:) It seems that the old timey characters, that I grew up watching in the old 30's, 40's and 50's Movies are back in style again. I get a kick out of it! It's kind of neat:)

A Storybook Ascent for One Actress

Michael Appleton for The New York Times
The actress Nina Arianda poses along the East River waterfront on Thursday in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where she lives.
Meeting Nina Arianda in person for the first time is very different from meeting her onstage. Instead of the high-pitched "WHA-A-A-A-T?" with which she announces her entrance as Billie Dawn, the classic dumb blonde she plays in the revival of "Born Yesterday" at the Cort Theater, Ms. Arianda offers a low-key, low-throated pleased-to-meet-you. Her honking version of hello — which Charles Isherwood described in The New York Times as a cross between Jean Harlow and Cyndi Lauper — has helped to turn Ms. Arianda, 26, into Broadway's newest darling and won her a Tony nomination for best actress.

A scene from "Venus in Fur."
But it is also giving her vocal cords a workout. She is finally off steroids (thank goodness), but the overuse of her voice is taking a toll, especially on matinee days, when there are two performances.
"In the morning I steam. Then there's the warming up before the show. And I do stretches at night," she recounted after ordering a cup of hot tea on a recent sunny afternoon near her apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. "It's an Olympic sport."
Her Broadway debut comes just about a year after an even more demanding vocal role Off Broadway as Vanda, an aspiring, domineering actress in "Venus in Fur," which earned this theatrical newcomer nodes on her vocal cords. (Vanda did her yelling in a lower register.) Her astonishing performance in "Venus," written by David Ives, captured the industry's attention.
"It's that moment, you know it when it happens, when the next Meryl Streep walks through the door," said Walter Bobbie, who directed the play. "Nina's performance started a brush fire. The word was you have to see this girl."
He added: "Right out of N.Y.U. she got this job, and five minutes later she booked four films and she's now starring on Broadway. That's not luck."
Woody Allen cast her in his new film, "Midnight in Paris," though she skipped the screening at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month. With pre-Tony Award publicity to manage and the danger of being infected by a stray germ on a long international flight, Ms. Arianda decided to stay put. As she said: "This month is nutso."
Despite the long blond hair and pouty lips, Ms. Arianda does not have classic glamour-girl looks. She can stretch her rubbery features into contorted expressions of manic excitement and disgust. Her rounded face has the uncanny ability to look simultaneously young and old. And at 5 feet 8 inches, with broad, square shoulders and large hands and feet on a thin frame, Ms. Arianda can instantly dominate a stage.
She received an M.F.A. from New York University two years ago, but Ms. Arianda has been hooked on the theater ever since attending an acting class at the age of 4.

Oil in Shale Sets Off a Boom in Texas - NYTimes.com

Shale Boom in Texas Could Increase U.S. Oil Output

Michael Stravato for The New York Times

CATARINA, Tex. — Until last year, the 17-mile stretch of road between this forsaken South Texas village and the county seat of Carrizo Springs was a patchwork of derelict gasoline stations and rusting warehouses.

A Chesapeake Energy drilling site near Big Wells, Tex. More Photos »

Now the region is in the hottest new oil play in the country, with giant oil terminals and sprawling RV parks replacing fields of mesquite. More than a dozen companies plan to drill up to 3,000 wells around here in the next 12 months.

The Texas field, known as the Eagle Ford, is just one of about 20 new onshore oil fields that advocates say could collectively increase the nation’s oil output by 25 percent within a decade — without the dangers of drilling in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico or the delicate coastal areas off Alaska.

There is only one catch: the oil from the Eagle Ford and similar fields of tightly packed rock can be extracted only by using hydraulic fracturing, a method that uses a high-pressure mix of water, sand and hazardous chemicals to blast through the rocks to release the oil inside.

The technique, also called fracking, has been widely used in the last decade to unlock vast new fields of natural gas, but drillers only recently figured out how to release large quantities of oil, which flows less easily through rock than gas. As evidence mounts that fracking poses risks to water supplies, the federal government and regulators in various states are considering tighter regulations on it.

The oil industry says any environmental concerns are far outweighed by the economic benefits of pumping previously inaccessible oil from fields that could collectively hold two or three times as much oil as Prudhoe Bay, the Alaskan field that was the last great onshore discovery. The companies estimate that the boom will create more than two million new jobs, directly or indirectly, and bring tens of billions of dollars to the states where the fields are located, which include traditional oil sites like Texas and Oklahoma, industrial stalwarts like Ohio and Michigan and even farm states like Kansas.

Great! Or is it??? I live in an area, where that Frakin has been done to get the Natural Gas out of the ground here. And in just a few Short Years, in my area. Much of the Underground Water has been Contaminated and made unusable for human Consumption. What most people don't know is... That Frakin takes allot, I mean A LOT of Water! Water that is no longer usable for Human Consumption. That along with the Ground Water that Frakin Poisons. Takes the very life sustaining water away form the People living in the surrounding areas. People, who depend on Community Water Wells or their own Private Wells, for Water to Drink, Cook With, Bathe... to Live! Then there are the Poisson Gasses that are Routinely Released from Gas Wells. Because they have no Monetary Value to the Oil Companies. They are jus let out into the atmosphere. There are tow Wells, within one mile of my home now and I live in the City Limits of my small TX Town. I own the Mineral Rights on a Small Piece of land in the Country, in an area where Gas Wells are being Drilled right now. And I have been contacted by two Oil Companies about Leasing my Rights. Their offers are so judiciously small, that it amounts to Peanuts for Me! I'm talking about anywhere from about $35 to $1 a month. From what the Contracts I have been given to sign, read. And there is no guarantee that you will be paid anything at all, even on a Producing Well! They are lying, conniving, cheating Companies. These Oil Companies that have contacted me. That put so many one sided (for their interests only) clauses in their Contracts. That there are at least 10 to 20 ways in each Contract, that would allow them to get out of paying a Mineral Rights owner anything at all! So, Leasing your Mineral Rights, may just turn out to be. Nothing but a big head ache for you. And in the end, all you will end up getting is the Big Oil Shaft!:O And... after all is said and done. What are we going to drink, to stay alive? Oil???
