$99 Parallella supercomputer appears on Kickstarter

Sep. 28, 2012 (8:29 am) By:

The launch of the Raspberry Pi has been a huge success story, and promises to get cheap computers into the hands of kids and hobbyists around the world. But it has also had another effect–it has inspired others to look into alternative methods of developing cheap computing platforms.

One company taking inspiration from the Raspberry Pi Foundation is Adapteva, which focuses on semiconductor technology and has developed a very efficient multicore microprocessor architecture. Now they intend to use that architecture to offer up a $99 supercomputer with the help of Kickstarter.

The project is called Parallella, with the main aim being to make parallel computing open and accessible to everyone at a very cheap price point. Adapteva intends to do this by using its Epiphany RISC processors, which promise up to 45GHz of CPU performance using only 5 Watts and fitting on a board the size of a credit card.

The Parallella computer itself combines the "Epiphany Multicore Accelerator" consisting of 16 or 64 cores, with a dual-core ARM A9 processor, 1GB RAM, MicroSD, USB 2.0, HDMI, Ethernet, and Ubuntu Linux. It's also a completely open platform, meaning everything is open source including the architecture and the SDK.

Surprise at the GoDaddy outage? Vulnerable networks are ticking bombs

Takeaway: Bob Eisenhardt sees the GoDaddy outage as the tip of iceberg for vulnerable networks from banks to infrastructure. His take is pessimistic. Do you disagree?

It was hard to imagine — the total collapse of the GoDaddy service for six hours on September 12, 2012 by an outside attacker (perhaps) — a single hacker associated, (perhaps) with Anonymous. The CEO of GoDaddy promptly indicated it was caused, rather, by a “series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables.” The stories are bad no matter which version you pick. Accompanying this failure was the thousands of small business websites that produce genuine commerce also collapsed. (One customer was out $50,000). With those failures, an untold amount of raw data also was put, potentially, at severe risk of security theft. With theft can easily follow lawsuits and lawyers get rich.

The GoDaddy incident could be viewed as a staggering breach of web-based commerce, and Steve Wozniak has it precisely correct when the guru-savant of Apple predicted the security risks of storing data “in” the cloud. A partner of mine (a certified BCP/DR planner) feels precisely the same way about the inherent dangers of cloud-based storage. The list of consequences is actually endless if you ponder the imponderables of it all.

The precise cause of the GoDaddy attack remains vague for, obviously, the hacker (or as Cliff Stoll might say, a piece of human slime) is not going to reveal his methods or, worse, location, though doubtless the IP security trace is after his data packets. Anonymous rarely takes credit for attacks it does not commit but the stories on the GoDaddy account do not add up under verification. Thus the internal network story gains credibility or at least makes for better PR. It is far better to admit it’s an internal error than an external invasion which frightens everybody away.

This really looks like a True Break Though in Technology!:) And if it takes off any time soon. Notice, this Video was uploaded in 2009. But, it does take time to "Get New Tech to Market". And if it does work well and takes off. Then, I'm sure it will be used for some Great and Not so Great Applications...

Researchers at Tokyo University have come up with a technology that is a first and significant step away from the mouse and keyboard touchable holograms.

[Hiroyuki Shinoda, Professor, Tokyo University]:
"Up until now, holography has been for the eyes only, and if you'd try to touch it, your hand would go right through. But now we have a technology that also adds the sensation of touch to holograms."

The technology consists of software that uses ultrasonic waves to create pressure on the hand of a user touching the projected hologram.

Researchers are using two Wiimotes from Nintendos Wii gaming system to track a users hand.

The technology was introduced at SIGGRAPH, an annual computer graphics conference, and has so far only been tested with relatively simple objects.

But its inventors have big plans for touchable holograms in the future.

[Hiroyuki Shinoda, Professor, Tokyo University]:
"For example, it's been shown that in hospitals, there can be contamination between people due to objects that are touched communally. But if you can change the switches and such into a virtual switch, then you no longer have worry about touch contamination. This is one application that's quite easy to see."

Touchable holograms could be used for a wide variety of things... everything from light switches to books with each appearing when needed, and then disappearing when not.

And holograms could replace the need for making new interfaces for technology, since they could be changed without having to make a new physical product.

Blue LED Helmet - Looks Great! - YouTube Video

My Blue LED Helmet

by Brian Cardellini

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9UPH-8tRQ8Q

From Video Comments...
Yeah, it's for costume only. I built it to wear at Burning Man. For protection you'd be better off wearing no helmet than wearing this. I carved out most of the Styrofoam to fit all the electronics in, and there's a thick metal battery back right behind your skull. And it'd be even worse for street bike use because blue lights are a DOT no-no and it'll distract all the drivers you're hoping don't run into you.

This is a very well done Project and I love the visuals and the editing work in this video too!:) Looks to me like, you could add wireless control and have one of these change colors and turn on certain lights when you hit the breaks on your bike. I know... there would have to be considerable changes to make it safe for Riding...
