Linux Mint Debian 201204 RC (MATE/Cinnamon & Xfce) released!

I like the previous versions of Linux Mint Debian. And I'm downloading the new one now. I especially like that the Live OS versions, are ready to us on the Internet (you don't have to manually install Flash and Java to Surf and watch Videos). I Booted up the linuxmint-201204-mate-cinnamon-32bit-rc.iso in VirtualBox, with 512mb of Ram and 64mb of Video Memory to see how it does. It runs quite well, even on these low resources in Vbox. I'm running Vbox on a 1.8ghz Core 2 with 2.5gig of ram and 512mb of Video Memory. Linux Mint Mate - Cinnamon, used from 260 to 290mb of Ram and ran from 50% to 100% of the CPU, when Playing music in a Flash Player in Firefox (see Screenshots). So, it should run great on a Real Hardware System, with more Resources. I have tried out previous versions of Linux Min Debian and I didn't find it any harder to work in than any other Versions of Mint. In fact I much prefer working in a real Debian Based Distro to a Ubuntu Based Distro. Debian has a much more logical way of doing things and you can use 'root' privileges as opposed to "sudo" and that saves me allot of aggravation with "Permission Denied" Errors, when you are trying to get things done. Simple things like changing the Resolution to work with your Video Card and Monitor. And especially when you want to instal some Apps in the Command Line. But, I still much prefer working in Fedora Linux Systems. Mostly because I find Yum Package manager easier to remember the commands when I use it in the Terminal. Such as "yum install package" instead of Debian's, "apt-get install package". This doesn't seem like a big difference, until you get into more complicated commands though. Still, that's just my preference. Not that one is better than the other... If you want a Linux Distro, that is ready to go, right after you Download it. Then I would say, Linux Mint, 201204 Mate - Cinnamon, is a great one to go with!:)

Important links

LMDE in brief

  • Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is a semi-rolling distribution based on Debian Testing.
  • It’s available in both 32 and 64-bit as a live DVD with MATE/Cinnamon or Xfce.
  • The purpose of LMDE is to look identical to the main edition and to provide the same functionality while using Debian as a base.

FAQ

1. Is LMDE compatible with Ubuntu-based Linux Mint editions?
No, it is not. LMDE is compatible with Debian, which isn’t compatible with Ubuntu.
2. Is LMDE fully compatible with Debian?
Yes, 100%. LMDE is compatible with repositories designed for Debian Testing.
3. What is a semi-rolling distribution?
Updates are constantly fed to Debian Testing, where users experience frequent regressions but also frequent bug fixes and improvements. LMDE receives “Update Packs” which are tested snapshots of Debian Testing. Users can experience a more stable system thanks to update packs, or switch their sources to follow Testing, or even Unstable, directly to get more frequent updates.
4. How does LMDE compare to the Ubuntu-based editions?
Pros:
  • You don’t need to ever re-install the system. New versions of software and updates are continuously brought to you.
  • It’s faster and more responsive than Ubuntu-based editions.
Cons:
  • Although it’s using Romeo for unstable packages, LMDE continuously changes as it receives updates and new software. Compared to a frozen version of Linux Mint which changes very little once it’s publicly released, it’s not as stable. Things are likely to break more often but fixes can also come quicker. For this reason, LMDE requires a deeper knowledge and experience with Linux, dpkg and APT.
  • Debian is a less user-friendly/desktop-ready base than Ubuntu. Expect some rough edges.

Additional notes:

  • About the installer: The live installer is developed from scratch with Debian in mind. It’s configurable and it can be re-used by other Debian-based distributions. We noticed a lack in live technologies and in live Debian installers, so we’re happy to take the lead on this. If you’re a developer and you’re interested in using it, have a look at its source repository and don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help you fork it and merge upcoming changes between our two projects.
  • About bugs: Please use this blog to report bugs.
  • About the media: It comes as a liveDVD. Locales work differently in Debian and the package base requires more space.
  • Dedicated chat room: #linuxmint-debian is open to LMDE users on irc.spotchat.org.

LMDE 201204

I’d like to thank all the people who tested the RC release and sent us feedback. We identified 68 bugs in this release and we’re currently down to 19 bugs left.

Amongst the bugs that were fixed, some affected the way we build our ISO images and the ability for the CD or USB stick to properly boot on computers which mount order changes during the boot sequence. Consequently, the final release of LMDE 201204 and future releases of Linux Mint should work on more configurations and systems where they previously failed to boot.

GDM3 also went under review during this RC release. Its lack of configuration and the fact that users couldn’t select their language were identified as important regressions. A discussion is ongoing within the MATE project at the moment to decide whether GDM2 should be forked by MATE or simply re-packaged within Linux Mint, and whether the codebase for it should be version 2.20 (which is feature-rich, graphically configurable and theme-able) or 2.32 (which provides a better interface). We’re also considering replacing GDM3 in LMDE and Linux Mint 13.

Linux Mint 13

Linux Mint 13 will be named “Maya” and should be available at the end of May 2012.

The codename was chosen a long time ago, after my daughter’s name who was named Maya in reference to:

In India, people might also know “Maya” as the “Illusion“.

Note: The choice for this codename has nothing to do with the Mayan Calendar or the notorious cataclysmic interpretations for 2012 (by then we’ll be looking at Linux Mint 14 and a different codename).

Linux Mint 13 should feature separate editions for MATE and Cinnamon. Whether one of these and which of these two editions will be considered the “default” wasn’t decided yet.

GlobaLeaks - Open Source Whistleblowing Framework

WHAT IS GlobaLeaks? GlobaLeaks is the first open-source whistleblowing framework. It empowers anyone to easily set up and maintain a whistleblowing platform. GlobaLeaks can help many different types of users: media organizations, activist groups, corporations and public agencies.

Why we think transparency is important

GlobaLeaks strives to increase accountability and transparency in our society. When information that affects the public remains hidden, democracy and economies cease to function properly.

We are interested in fulfilling the needs of diverse public interest use cases. From usage by media to public agencies, from corporations to activists. We use the term framework to emphasize the flexibility of the GlobaLeaks platform. For example, the whistleblower will be anonymous by default, but if the whistleblower chooses to disclose their identity, the framework allows them to do so.

We believe the public should demand that governments and companies be more accountable for their actions. And we believe governments and economies that embrace openness will benefit by promoting trust and enabling informed discourse and decision-making.

We use the term “framework” to emphasize the flexibility of GlobaLeaks. For example, the whistleblower will be anonymous by default, but if whistleblowers choose to disclose their identity, the framework allows them to do so. Entities that require whistleblowers to identify themselves can do that as well.

We believe it is important to make an open-source tool because this allows many types of people to use GlobaLeaks and enables the creation of a community that can constantly make contributions to improve the framework.

How we will open society

Organizations that promote whistleblowing and transparency are not a new development. There are people who have been active in this field for decades, and groups such as Public Concern At Work have existed for years. Other organizations such as WikiLeaks have more recently captured the world’s attention. Not all of these groups have the same definition of “whistleblowing,” but many of them have faced similar obstacles.

A key problem is the difficulty of maintaining the privacy of the whistleblower. We at GlobaLeaks come from a strong information security background and have designed our platform to be as secure and privacy-preserving as possible.

The GlobaLeaks suite of software will empower people to stand up anonymously no matter what their definition of “whistleblowing” is. The person or organization running the software will be able to customize the platform to suit their needs. GlobaLeaks is designed with flexibility in mind, while enabling maximal privacy and security by default.

The technologies we use to guarantee the security and anonymity of communications are called Tor Hidden Services. These technologies protect both the computer that is sending the information and the server that receives it. Both the whistleblower and the server that gets the messages are as immune from retaliation attacks as possible.

Possible use cases of GlobaLeaks software

Postal Service Closings: Snail Mail Can’t Compete With Internet | WebProNews

Postal Service Closings: Snail Mail Can't Compete With Internet

New bill introduced to stop closings

With the ushering in of the digital age comes the inevitable decline of long-standing traditions, like going to the post office to send out and receive mail. So many companies do business online now–the offering of bill-pay and e-commerce have certainly been huge components in the decrease of traditional mail–that snail-mail has become all but obsolete, which is bad news for postal workers.

Do you think the U.S.P.S. can survive the digital age? Tell us below.

Not only are people relying more heavily on online bill-paying services now, they are also turning to the web for interaction with others; rather than sending a birthday card or party invitation, they send an email or e-vite, citing social media sites like Facebook and Twitter as major modes of communication. The introduction of media sources like Netflix and Gamefly saw a brief surge in mailroom activity, since millions of DVDs and games were being sent back and forth every day. However, even those companies can't be relied on anymore by mail carriers, because they've conveniently added streaming and downloads to their services. And with more things going digital every day–even books–people are using their computers and digital devices more than ever, seriously decreasing their need for mail service.

The loss of revenue in the postal industry–which is the second-largest civilian employer in the U.S., coming right behind retail giant Wal-Mart– and sorting facilities meant the suggestion of raising stamp prices to 50 cents, but that idea is tempered with the realization that people will just seek services from UPS or FedEx instead. In other words, consumers don't want to lose their mail service, but they don't want to pay to keep it.

But with all the talk of closings and employees being laid off, groups like the Pensacola Area Local of the American Postal Workers Union have pointed out to WebProNews that the U.S.P.S. isn't dependent on taxpayer dollars and that the idea of a taxpayer bailout is ridiculous. They also say that the revenue losses don't stem from mail processing or delivery, but rather from a "2006 congressional mandate that the Postal Service pre-fund future retiree health benefits for the next 75 years", which amounts to $5.5 billion every year to ensure the futures of people who haven't even been born yet. They also propose that Congress grants the Postal Service access to its own money after billions of dollars were overfunded in their pension accounts. In their view, Congress is largely responsible for the issue and is capable of fixing the problem.

On the government's end of the spectrum, President Obama has introduced the Postal Plan, which would eliminate Saturday service, saving as much as $3 billion a year. It seems like a fair idea; most post offices around the country already have limited hours on Saturday anyway.

Space shuttle Discovery placed atop jumbo jet for its last ride

Orbiter set for this week's transfer from Florida to Smithsonian in Virginia

Kim Shiflett  /  AP
Workers attach the space shuttle Discovery to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft in the Mate-Demate Device at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday. Discovery will be transported to the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia on Tuesday.
By Editor, CollectSpace

NASA mounted the space shuttle Discovery on a jumbo jet on Sunday in preparation for the retired orbiter's delivery to the Smithsonian. The paired air- and spacecraft are expected to fly out of Florida for Virginia on Tuesday morning, weather permitting.
Discovery's mating to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, or SCA, NASA's modified Boeing 747 jetliner, came a day later than the space agency had planned. On Saturday, wind gusts at the Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility set the 167,000-pound (75,300-kilogram) Discovery swaying under its lift sling, posing a risk that it could impact the Mate-Demate Device, the gantrylike steel structure used to hoist the shuttle onto the jetliner.
