Sony Sued For Removal Of Linux Support From PS3 - PS3 News at IGN

Sony Sued For Removal Of Linux Support From PS3

'Other OS' feature the center of a new class action lawsuit.

April 28, 2010 - A class action lawsuit has been filed against Sony Computer Entertainment America for the removal of the 'Other OS' feature from the PlayStation 3.

In March, Sony released firmware v3.21 that disabled the feature, disallowing users from installing the Linux operating system. The update was not mandatory; however those who chose not to download it were cut off from a number of other features, one of which included signing in to PlayStation Network.

The suit, filed on April 27 by Anthony Ventura of California, seeks to redress Sony for the "intentional disablement of the valuable functionality originally advertised as available" for the Playstation 3. The disabling of Linux support is not only in breach of the sales contract between Sony and its customers, the suit says, but also a deceptive business practice "perpetrated on millions of unsuspecting customers."

Senators complain about Facebook privacy changes

Senators complain about Facebook privacy changes

Facebook's latest privacy policy update has once again gotten the company in hot water, this time with four US senators. Senators Al Franken, Charles Schumer, Michael Bennet, and Mark Begich wrote an open letter to Facebook on Tuesday, urging the company to take "swift and productive steps" to make user information more private and warning that the Federal Trade Commission may get involved if certain concerns aren't addressed soon.

Being questioned is Facebook's decision to categorize a user's hometown, current city, "likes," interests, friends, and other info as "public information." Now, even the most private user cannot have a Facebook account to communicate with friends while also keeping this information hidden from public view, and the senators believe this creates a "potential gold mine of data for unsolicited advertisements."

The Easiest way to Prototype a Web Page or User Interface

The Easiest way to Prototype a Web Page or User Interface

Are you still using scraps of paper to sketch the layout for your web pages?  Or maybe you've gone a bit more hi-tech, and are using Post-It notes on your desk?  Or perhaps even a whiteboard and pens?

I don't blame you for not using a computer.  After all, there's just no software app that can compare with pen and paper when it comes to roughing out a page design.  Or at least, there hasn't been until now.

Balsamiq Mockups is a superb program which makes it incredibly easy to draw prototype screen layouts for web page designs, software user interfaces, and more.  It's simple to use, fast, and deliberately shields you from the complexities that are all to tempting to worry about but which really don't need to concern you during the early stages of web site or software app development.

Find out more at www.balsamiq.com.  The desktop app version costs $79, but the great news is that you can use it online completely free.

Free online app can currently be used here: http://www.balsamiq.com/builds/mockups-web-demo/

0to255 lets you select matching colors for CSS, fast

0to255 lets you select matching colors for CSS, fast

0to255

0to255 it a very slick, well-designed tool for quickly finding color variations for borders and color gradients.

You dial in a Hex color code (say, "de40d5") and instantly get a long palette with light-to-dark variations of that particular hue. Every variation has its hex color value written across it, and when you hover over it you get a small swatch showing your original color along with the currently selected color, so you can see at a glance what they look like when paired.

The tool is obviously aimed at CSS-wielding web designers; it's not a substitute for anything Photoshop (or GIMP) can do in the color-matching department, but when you need to find a matching hue in a hurry, it's a very nice solution. If you click the de40d5 link above, you will see that you can provide the initial hue directly via the URL itself (meaning, you append the hue to "0to255.com/"). Slick, simple and effective.

The Complexities to Creating Real Electronic Health Records | Linux Journal

The Complexities to Creating Real Electronic Health Records

If you have been paying attention (even if you do not live in the United States), you know that the U.S. Congress passed a broad, sweeping piece of legislation, purported to reform health care in the United States. What you probably do not know (even if you do live in the United States) is that this is not the first piece of legislation to target the issue of health care. In fact, a number of pieces of legislation, and a fair amount of money, has been thrown at the issue of health care in the United States in the last few years, specifically in the area of electronic health records. But with all of this focus on streamlining and digitally electrifying health records, I began to wonder where did the Open Source community stand and where is its input? There is certainly a lot of money sitting out there for someone who wants to try to build the better mouse trap.

What got me thinking about this was an article in the Spring 2010 issue of 2600 that reminded that the issue of record keeping, one of the so called linchpins of reducing a lot of the costs of health care, is not as simple an issue as you might expect. The article cites the break-in and ransom of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Prescription Monitoring program. This is not the first time I have written about it. But for me, it highlighted one of the many issues that need to be considered when we talk about an eHealth record system. To me, this and a couple of other issues need to be highlighted to better understand the full scope of the problem.

Fwd: Linux Today - Florida Hospital Takes Charge of Their Destiny with Drupal

Florida Hospital Takes Charge of Their Destiny with Drupal
Apr 28, 2010, 00 :03 UTC (0 Talkback[s]) (372 reads)

(Other stories by Dee-Ann LeBlanc)

"In August 2007, Florida hospital hired a "rock star" physician. With this hire, a series of events was triggered that would end up with Drupal (news, site) hosting over 125 department and team intranet sites, over 40 externally-facing marketing sites and a growing number of other applications. Want to know more? Read on.

"Florida Hospital

"Florida Hospital is a massive faith-based non-profit with eight campuses in central Florida. They have over 2,000 beds, around 19,000 employees and treat over 1 million patients annually. This is an organization with US$ 3 billion in annual revenue. These folks don't mess around with solutions that aren't solutions.

"The Problem Mounts

"The hospital's Internet strategy is driven by marketing and PR. According to David Oakley, Manager, Online Strategy: Florida Hospital Experience Network, in 2003 a vendor convinced the folks in marketing that it was time to purchase a web server and build their own websites. After purchasing the server, they went to IT and weren't well received. Their new server ended up living elsewhere, outside the official hospital network."

April security fixes for Windows will not install if the user's machine is infected with the Alureon rootkit.

The company's latest security patches, released on April 16, will spot the rootkit if present and refuse to continue with installation. The Alureon rootkit was responsible for crashes in February's security updates, including Blue Screen of Death errors for XP users due to the way it interacted with the KB977165 patch, which required kernel access.

April's security bulletin primarily patches vulnerabilities in the kernel, with the most severe exploit allowing a elevation of privileges if an attacker has logged on locally. The patches include 11 security bulletins that fix 25 vulnerabilities, and can be installed once the infected machines are cleaned.

Alureon causes problems with the way Microsoft's patches interact with the kernel, which has led the company to include a package detection logic that prevents the installation of the security update if the rootkit is present on 32-bit systems, according to the MS10-021 bulletin.

Microsoft's Fix it Center, now in beta, consists of both an online service and downloadable software. It's designed to bring some of the diagnostic capabilities built into Windows 7 to older PCs.

Microsoft is testing a new "Fix it Center"--an online and PC-based tool for helping users solve their Windows technical problems.

While a fair amount of diagnostics are built into Windows 7, the free Fix it Center aims to expand on these and also bring similar capabilities to Windows XP and Windows Vista.

The service, which went into beta on Thursday, consists of both a Windows download and an online service.

"Fix it Center finds and fixes many common PC and device problems automatically," Microsoft said on its Web site. "It also helps prevent new problems by proactively checking for known issues and installing updates. Fix it Center helps to consolidate the many steps of diagnosing and repairing a problem into an automated tool that does the work for you."

While the service has around 300 fixes built-in, Microsoft said it can also be useful even if it can't solve an issue on its own.

"If Fix it Center cannot solve a specific issue, customers can still access phone, email or chat support with a Microsoft Support professional who can access their Fix it Center account and get details about the hardware, the problem, and the solutions they have already tried, to ensure faster problem resolution," Microsoft said.

The service works with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, although for XP it requires customers to be using at least Service Pack 3 (or Service Pack 2 of the 64-bit version of Windows XP Professional). It also works with Windows Server 2003 (with Service Pack 2) and Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft is also aiming to make it attractive for small businesses, by allowing a single account to be used for multiple PCs.

The service builds on the "Fix it" brand that Microsoft established as a means for automating Windows problem-solving tasks. Starting in December 2008, Microsoft launched an option on some of its help desk articles that allowed a user to click on a button and have a series of problem-solving steps taken automatically.

Descriptionwarranty
Rescue Tape is a self-fusing silicone repair product with infinite uses. First used by the U.S. Military and now seen at consumer and industrial trade shows across America, this is the most versatile and easy-to-use emergency repair product available. You can repair leaks on plumbing and hoses in a flash, use to insulate electrical wiring or as shrink wrap, wrap tool handles, and much, much more. Dimensions: 1" x 12 ft. roll.
  • Self-fusing—creates a permanent air-tight, water-tight seal in seconds
  • Never gets gummy or sticky like electrical or duct tape — no messy cleanup
  • Resists fuels, oils, acids, solvents, salt water, road salt, and UV rays
  • Extremely versatile with an unbelievably long shelf life
  • Incredible 700 PSI tensile strength
  • Insulates 8,000V per layer
  • Withstands temperatures of 500° F
  • Remains flexible to -85° F (-60° C)

Rescue Tape has infinite uses!
Here are just a few suggestions:
  • Keep it on board vehicles & equipment for emergency hose repair!
  • Seal leaky hoses, pipes, tubing, lines, & fittings
  • Neaten up lines and extension cords in stowage
  • Wrap tools and handles for a GREAT non-slip grip
  • Wrap wiring harnesses and custom split-looming
  • Waterproof electrical connections and terminals
  • Use it as an emergency fan belt!
  • Make emergency O-Rings
  • Wrap hydraulic fittings and other exposed metal connections to help prevent corrosion
  • Works even over wet, dirty, or oily surfaces!
  • Use it as a tourniquet or emergency wrap over bleeding injuries
  • Wrap it around ANYTHING that you want secure, and it will never leave any sticky residue

Rescue Tape Directions

1.) Wrap Rescue Tape around project by stretching and overlapping onto itself. Stretch at least double to ensure a good bond; for high pressure leaks stretch to maximum amount. The tighter Rescue Tape is wrapped, the quicker and stronger the bond.

2.) Continue wrapping Rescue Tape around project by overlapping 50% onto itself so that ½ the width is covered with the next wrap. The first and last wrap should completely overlap onto the previous wrap for a complete bond. Additional layers may be necessary, and the same process should be used over the previous layers. Rescue Tape works on either side.

3.) Repositioning Rescue Tape is only appropriate in the first few seconds after wrapping. Attempting to reposition Rescue Tape after 1 minute or longer is not recommended. Rescue Tape is not reusable; however, additional Rescue Tape can be applied over project at any time in the future.
http://www.rescuetape.com/images/directions-illustration.png

Additional Suggestions:

For high pressure leaks, additional wrapping may be required. Most hose repairs can be repaired with 3-5 layers in thickness, and wrapping 3 to 5 inches in each direction away from the leak; however, additional strength can be added simply by wrapping more Rescue Tape.

Rescue Tape has essentially a "maximum" stretch. It is important to stretch Rescue Tape to its maximum to avoid having the leak create a bubble.

Rescue Tape - Radiator Hose

For electrical wiring, it is not necessary to stretch tightly. In fact, it will be more resilient to abrasion when it is not stretched as tightly.

This product is provided without warranty, either expressed or implied, of fitness for a specific purpose. Because conditions and methods of use are beyond the manufacturer’s control, neither manufacturer nor seller will assume any responsibility for the use or misuse of this product. This includes, but is not limited to, any consequential damages.

SystemRescueCd

This is a good one... I've used it since it was only a Command line version. Now it has a GUI too...

About SystemRescueCd

Description: SystemRescueCd is a Linux system rescue disk available as a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk. It comes with a lot of linux software such as system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, ...) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It requires no installation since you just have to boot on the CD-ROM. It can be used to perform admin tasks on both linux servers, linux desktops or windows boxes. The kernel supports most of the important file systems (ext2/ext3/ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, btrfs, xfs, jfs, vfat, ntfs, iso9660), as well as network filesystems (samba and nfs).

Partimage

About partimage

Partimage is opensource disk backup software. It saves partitions having a supported filesystem on a sector basis to an image file. Although it runs under Linux, Windows and most Linux filesystems are supported. The image file can be compressed to save disk space and transfer time and can be split into multiple files to be copied to CDs or DVDs.

Partitions can be saved across the network using the partimage network support, or using Samba / NFS (Network File Systems). This provides the ability to perform an hard disk partition recovery after a disk crash.

Partimage can be run as part of your normal system or as a stand-alone from the live SystemRescueCd. This is helpful when the operating system cannot be started. SystemRescueCd comes with most of the data recovery software for linux that you may need.

Partimage will only copy data from the used portions of the partition. (This is why it only works for supported filesystem). For speed and efficiency, free blocks are not written to the image file. This is unlike other commands, which also copy unused blocks. Since the partition is processed on a sequential sector basis disk transfer time is maximized and seek time is minimized ,Partimage also works for very full partitions. For example, a full 1 GB partition may be compressed with d own to 400MB.

ISO Recorder v 2 and CDR Tools 2.0.1

ISO Recorder

Welcome to the ISO Recorder download page. ISO Recorder is a tool (power toy) for Windows XP, 2003 and now Windows Vista, that allows (depending on the Windows version) to burn CD and DVD images (DVD support is only available on Windows Vista), copy disks, make images of the existing data CDs and DVDs and create ISO images from a content of a disk folder.

ISO Recorder has been conceived during Windows XP beta program, when Microsoft for the first time started distributing new OS builds as ISO images. Even though the new OS had CD-burning support (by Roxio), it did not have an ability to record an image. ISO Recorder has filled this need and has been one of the popular Windows downloads ever since.

With an advent of Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 the version 2 of ISO Recorder has been released, which introduced some new features including ISO image creation and support for non-admin user.

Finally, in Windows Vista it became possible to address another long-standing request and provide DVD burning capability.

Since the very beginning ISO Recorder has been a free tool (for personal use). It is recommended by MSDN download site along with Easy CD and Nero and is used by a number of companies around the world.

  • You need to run a Windows 2000 or 2003 Server on a domain, so to enable the RIS Service. You need a DHCP and a DNS servers too (they can be hosted on the Windows 2000/20003 server).
  • No need for a domain at all. No need for a Windows 2000/2003 server: even Windows 98 is enough. You can also use a Linux box. OK, you can also use a Windows 2000/2003 server, if you've got one :)
  • Only the Professional version of Windows can be deployed by RIS, because it has to communicate with Active Directory, thus with a domain.
  • You can deploy Windows XP Home if you like.
  • You've got to prepare a target i386 folder that will be deployed onto your client workstations. Usually, you'd use riprep. So, you need a Windows XP CD.
  • No riprep step needed. Our built-in Generator will prepare the i386 folder for you, fast and easy. If you've got a Windows XP CD, it will be deployed to your client workstations. If you don't have one, no problem ! users will have the possibility to use their own Windows CD -- be XP Pro or Home, be an English CD or another locale flavor.
  • You may need to add network drivers into the i386 folder, according to your workstations' hardware.
  • Our Linux kernel should detect the vast majority of network adapters with no needed intervention.
  • Currently, partition settings cannot be customized in Microsoft's winnt.sif parameters file. Windows will install on the C: drive, but if an old Windows folder is found on C:, Microsoft's setup will either try to install Windows on another partition, either demand the formating of C:.
  • Partition settings can be customized.
  • If you want Windows to be installed on the C: drive, this drive will HAVE to be formated. Even if it's already NTFS. Even if there's no old Windows on it.
  • You don't have to format C:. You can choose wether you want a from-scratch installation, that will format the first drive, or if you want no formating at all. In the former case, old Windows files will be removed to make space and avoid confusion, but everything else will be kept on the disk.
  • Drivers must be added in a $OEM$ folder. Thus, you've got to collect and maintain them up-to-date.
  • Our default distribution files include a large quantity of up-to-date drivers (currently, 1 Go). You can have our software keep them up-to-date. And of course, you can choose to modify the choice, or use your own collection.
  • Service pack and hotfixes must be collected and added manually (means: slip-straming the service pack, and have the hotfixes installed by batch scripts). You've got to maintain the collection.
  • Our default distribution files include an up-to-date collection of hotfixes. Pre-made scripts will install them. Service pack can be slip-streamed automatically, even if the user has to provide a Windows XP CD. And of course, you can remove hotfixes if they conflict with your software or policy.
  • Software must be added manually. This means you have to prepare silent packages, and add batch-like scripts to install them after the Windows installation (runonce scripts).
  • Our Software Repository is always full of MSI-packaged apps. The graphical interface of our Generator makes it easy to choose which ones to include on your distribution. All these apps are open-source or freeware, but of course, you can add your own applications.
  • Many other features make WINNER the best choice for a RIS architecture.
