Overview

The ZyX Graphical Rebootless LiveOS Installer will allow you to install a 'live operating system'(LiveOS) to an internal or external system storage volume/disk, just like the standard Fedora LiveOS installer (anaconda/liveinst). However, unlike traditional *nix installers, after installation you will not need to reboot. The same 'live' system, applications, and data that you were using before, during, and after installation, seamlessly transforms into a traditional permanent OS installation on the destination system disk.

This is accomplished by copying the running 'live' root filesystem block for block, while in use, to the destination volume. This is done using a devicemapper 'mirror' device. Once the mirroring completes, the resources for the original LiveOS root filesystem are released, leaving a normally[1] installed system. Thus you could for instance, eject the LiveCD (or remove LiveUSB), insert a blank media, and immediately burn a replicated copy of the LiveOS to give to one person, while another person is already using the freed LiveOS media on another system. All this before shutting down or rebooting the system for the first time.

[1] The only minor difference between the final installed system, and a traditionally installed system, is that until the first reboot, the mounted root filesystem will be accessed through a nearly no-op simple devicemapper linear layer. In other words, until the next boot, a performance hit no worse than any other rootfs-on-lvm installation.

Howto :: Test and Use ZyX-LiveInstaller

Partitioning - You are mostly on your own-

No matter which distribution you are using, you must essentially do your partitioning with whatever native tools are available. Fedora has palimpsest, SoaS has gparted, CentOS has fdisk. zyx-liveinstaller does have a simple button to launch the best external gui partitioning tool it can find, and return you to its installation wizard when you have completed partitioning.

You will need at least one partition/volume for the root filesystem. Additionally you may optionally choose partitions/volumes for a seperate /boot, and swap space.

Note: Just like the Fedora/Anaconda/Liveinst installer, this will necessarily be a destructive install, reformatting the chosen partitions/volumes.

Note: You needn't concern yourself with formatting, or setting the type and bootable flags on the destination partitions, as zyx-liveinstaller will set these appropriately.

Launching in Fedora-11, 12 or rawhide (or derived) LiveCD/USB-

  • From the main menu, select System-> ->Administration-> ->Add/Remove_Software

  • Search for zyx-liveinstaller, and install.

  • From the main menu, launch Applications-> ->SystemTools-> ->Rebootless_LiveOS_Installation

Launching in SugarOnAStick Blueberry

  • ZyX-LiveInstaller is already included in the latest SoaS development releases. Follow the instructions here to download and burn either a Sugar-centric LiveCD or LiveUSB.

  • Launch the terminal activity.

  • type and run 'zyx-liveinstaller'

Launching in CentOS-5.4 LiveCD/USB -

Instructions

Once launched, just read the on-screen instructions and follow the wizard. Basically it boils down to selecting root, boot, and swap destination volumes, confirmation, and then installation progress. Once progress is under way, you can switch to another window, continue work in your live system, and all that work will get installed to the system disk in the background. When installation completes, just go about your business, and reboot when you feel like it, or possibly even never!

FAQ

Q: What distributions are supported?

  • Guitar-ZyX -- of course

  • SugarOnAStick Blueberry

  • Fedora -- Packages are now available in the F11, F12, and rawhide repositories

  • CentOS -- Most recently I added support in 0.1.15 for CentOS-5.4. I havent tested but perhaps CentOS-5.3 and earlier may work as well.

See the quickstart howto section above for more links and instructions on testing and use.

In order for zyx-liveinstaller's technique to be used with debian, ubuntu, and derivatives, tools will need to be written or enhanced to enable the composition of a sufficiently custom devicemapper-based LiveCD/USB spin.

Q: What concerns/risks are there with using this software?

  • First, like all GPL software, there are the usual WARNINGS about NO WARRANTY, not even implied warranties of merchantibility or fitness for a particular purpose.

  • Second, this installation process will OVERWRITE at least one disk partition, AS WELL AS YOUR BOOTLOADER. If you want to boot the resulting computer+disk to any other OS like one currently on it, you will need to manually configure the resulting grub installation to do. The typical ability to automatically detect and configure the most typical dual boot scenarios is on the roadmap for subsequent releases, but not currently present.

  • Finally, as is standard good advise for any OS installation, you should have sufficiently complete and recent backups of all the computer's data, as well as knowledge of how to restore that data should a nasty as yet unknown bug bite you. Though with the SoaS Blueberry testing cycle, ZyX-LiveInstaller did get a vastly greater amount of testing than I had done in the year or two prior.

Q: What doesn't (yet) work?

This is definitely still a rapidly maturing piece of software. Please see the latest documentation located in the online browsable sourcetree. Specifically-

Linux Foundation to World: Get a Job!

Broader training program, new jobs board emphasize need for new Linux talent

January 26, 2010, 08:52 AM —

Jobs have been the collective focus of much of the US population over the past two years. Whether it's keeping the job they have, or finding a new position in a very tight job market, US workers are looking for all the help they can get with employment. It's much the same in the rest of the world, too.

The good news is that, finally, there do seem to be indications that the frozen job market may be thawing, particularly in IT.

That's the indicator from analysts at IDC, who are estimating that the IT sector may see as many as 1 million new jobs in the US over the next four to five years, according to a January 7 story from NPR.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) is a little less optimistic, but the trend is still upwards: in 2008 there were 2,997,000 IT-related jobs, and by 2018, the BLS projects 3,115,000 jobs in the same sector, a 3.9 percent increase.

That may not seem too bright, but there are some jobs that will be more in demand than others. The same BLS report highlights an increase of 34 percent in software development positions over the same period. Several analysts have also pointed to data that Linux and open source professionals will be in high demand in the near future, too, as more businesses look to new solutions to improve their IT bottom lines.

Whether you take the optimistic or pessimistic path, one thing is agreed upon by most analysts: 2010 will be a bumpy start to the inevitable climb in IT jobs, as the US economy struggles to reset itself after a deep recession.

Knowing all of this, the Linux Foundation (LF) is trying to help fill the knowledge gap for Linux and open source workers. Last week, the non-profit group announced a new feature on Linux.com: a Jobs board aimed to help Linux and open source IT workers track down open jobs throughout the world.

Working with the JobThread Network, Linux.com hosts global job listings that job seekers can browse and search through and ideally find the best fit, all free of charge. Employers can post directly to Linux.com or to the entire JobThread Network, take their pick.

Now, this week, the LF is expanding another program: their online and on-site training for Linux professionals. This expansion is primarily in the form of a new free webinar series that will kick off on March 1 with Jon Corbet's "How to Contribute to the Linux Community" seminar. This is not a new presentation, as many attendees of Corbet's programs at various Linux events can attest. What is new is the fact that anyone who signs up for the webinar will be able to watch it free of charge.

This is just the first of a series of seminars that will include:

  • “An Introduction to Git,” by kernel maintainer and TAB chair James Bottomley
  • “Linux System Troubleshooting and Tuning” and “Linux Administration 101,” by Linux author and community manager Joe “Zonker” Brockmeier.
  • “A Linux Filesystem Overview,” by kernel developer Christoph Hellwig.
  • “Btrfs: An Intro and Update” to the new file system for Linux, by project lead and TAB member Chris Mason.
  • “Linux Performance Tuning,” by kernel and ext4 developer Ted Ts’o.

And that's just the icing on the cake. The webinar series is designed to give Linux end users and developers a look at all of the rest of the Linux Foundation's training offerings, now published in a new Winter/Spring 2010 course catalog, which highlights all of the courses the LF is offering for the first half of the year, including sessions co-located at LF events and sessions companies can have delivered on-site.

Much of this fits very neatly with the LF's stated goal of promoting Linux, and these sorts of offerings are certainly timely as IT job growth is predicted to rise moving forward, and Linux job offerings have reportedly already risen as much as 80 percent since 2005

It will take time to see how this program pans out. My hope is that the LF can work with existing certification programs or build its own certificate system that will enable participants to carry even more on their resumes.

Author's disclaimer: Until Jan. 22, I was Community Manager for the Linux Foundation. I was not, however, actively involved in either of these programs.

Wanted: Community Manager | ITworld

Wanted: Community Manager

Novell's Got Some Big Shoes to Fill

January 29, 2010, 02:39 PM —

Today marks the end of the Era of Zonker at Novell, as Joe Brockmeier ends his tenure as Community Manager of openSUSE.

Brockmeier has done a pretty good job while at Novell, coordinating the community and marketing efforts around the popular openSUSE distro. It goes without saying that getting him on board lent a lot of legitimacy to Novell's business deal with Microsoft in 2006. Brockmeier has a lot of respect in the community, so when he calmly explained why Novell hadn't made a deal with the devil, people listened.

I personally did not like Novell's decision to partner with Microsoft--in particular the patent protection agreement that prompted a knee-jerk response from the free software community to change GPL v3 during its draft phase. At the time, I voiced the opinion that if Microsoft wanted to have integration so badly, it could do it without patent cooperation agreements.

I still believe that, and it's something on which Brockmeier and I disagree. But it doesn't change my respect for his work.

After the Deadline grammar, spell check addon for Firefox is a writer's best friend

One more cool reason to get Firefox, if you don't already have it...

After the Deadline grammar, spell check addon for Firefox is a writer's best friend

After the Deadline has been mentioned before here on Download Squad. In September of 2009, Automattic (the company behind WordPress) acquired ATD and promptly integrated it into their wildly popular blogging platform.

If you do any writing anywhere on the web and you're using Firefox, you'll be glad to know that the After the Deadline add-on has hit version 1.0 and should be shedding Mozilla's experimental tag very soon.

In case you're not familiar with it, ATD is a brilliant proofreading tool. It can handle everything from common typos to misused punctuation, redundancies, double negatives, and other grammatical gaffs.

Install the Firefox add-on and you can tap its proofreading powers virtually anywhere you can type. It's well worth adding to your writer's toolbox even if you are a master of the written word -- it never hurts to have backup, after all!

eBay to Make Changes to Seller Fees

Not Everyone Thrilled with New eBay Changes

By Chris Crum
eBay announced  that starting March 30, it will be "lowering the cost of selling for sellers of all sizes," a notion that is heavily disputed. The company claims it will introduce its lowest insertion fees ever, and that may be true for the lowest-priced auctions, but many are claiming prices are higher. Just read through the comments of this article to get a feel for what is being discussed.

Note: Some edits have been made to this article, but it has always said that the price change represents an increase for some sellers (now bolded below).

Here are the new options for sellers, as described in eBay's announcement:

Does the Facebook Application Dashboard Hurt Privacy?

Facebook Providing More Channels for App Communication

By Chris Crum

Update: According to Nick O'Neill at AllFacebook, there is a "slight privacy oversight" (which he also says is "not a minor bug") that lets users view the latest apps that their friends have been using. He notes that Facebook will probably resolve the issue before full launch.

Original Article: Facebook will be launching the Games Dashboard and the Applications Dashboard in the coming weeks. The company says these will make it easier for users to interact with their apps, and will provide new communication channels from the home page.

"Once launched to users, the dashboards will serve as a personalized destination on Facebook for users to interact with their favorite applications, discover news ones and receive application updates related to recent activity," a spokesperson for Facebook tells WebProNews. "For developers, the Applications and Games dashboards will provide new opportunities for communication with users, as well as discoverability of their applications."

On the Facebook Developer Blog, Jordan M. Alperin outlines the following features:

How to Install any Linux on a USB | Hacking Truths

This is an interesting article. But, I do know that there are several Linux Distros that will do this for you fairly easily in a Graphic App, if you just want to copy the Distro you are using to a USB Drive. DSL Linux, Insert Rescue Tool Kit by Inside Security are good Small Footprint Distros that provide this from within. Fedora has an App for that... and I believe Dabain does too. There are several more that I have seen, but I can't remember their names right now. Basically, if you like a Linux Distro and want it to be Portable and like USB better than Carrying around a CD or DVD. The cool thing about using a USB Drive, is that you can save your files and add Apps to your drive easily, as apposed to a Sealed CD or DVD. There are several ways to get your Distro on a USB Drive and run it Live...

How to Install any Linux on a USB

23 January 2010 7 Comments Posted By Ashik

There are so many reasons why having a Linux distribution on a USB drive can come in handy. From having a “rescue” OS on your keyring to being able to install a new distribution on your EeePC, a “thumb drive” Linux has many uses. But getting Linux onto a USB drive can’t be simple. Right? Wrong. There is a tool, UNetbootin, that makes installing Linux
on a USB drive simple.

UNetbootin can be used on either Linux or Windows. In this article, we’ll be illustrating it for Both.

Note: Not all USB installations will work on all machines. This can be an issue with your BIOS or your USB drive. If you install an OS that doesn’t work, try another. But after all that work, you might wind up with a machine that simply won’t boot from a USB drive. You have been warned.

Using UNetbootin with Linux

unNamed App (Updated) | PandaLabs Blog

unNamed App (Updated)

Jan 27

Cybercriminals are always trying to figure out the best way to fool users, and I have to admit that sometimes they do it using some smart approaches. There is an hoax circulating on Facebook right now:

ALERT >>>>> Has your facebook been running slow lately? Go to “Settings” and select “application settings”, change the dropdown box to “added to profile”. If you see one in there called “un named app” delete it… Its an internal spybot. Pass it on. about a minute ago….i checked and it was on mine.

Of course that’s not true. But the most interesting thing is that as you can see, there is no link to click on. A normal user will go to a search engine to find out what this is about… and then he will find that there is a nice BlackHat SEO attack that makes the 1st and 2nd results to lead to a malicious website that forces you to install a rogueware application:

Aged Tires: A Driving Hazard? - ABC News

Aged Tires: A Driving Hazard?

ABC News went undercover and found retailers selling aged tires as brand new.
11/02/2009

WOW!:O I didn't know that there were so many old-new tires being sold in the US. I would have figured 2 maybe 3 year old were sold as new. But 6 to 14!!! That is criminal!!! I always wondered what those extra numbers were for on the tires. I knew of course with my love for old Autos, that tires age while setting. Especially outside in the weather, on a vehicle. And used tire shops even have to follow rules on Selling Old Tires. The Azle Tire Shop where I bought the used tires for my Blazer, told me all about that when I got the ones I have now. They couldn't even send my old ones in for Re-Treading. because of their age. I did think that only Re-Treads Peeled apart like that. I didn't know that New-Old Tires could do that too!:O

Facebook Users Targeted By Fake Virus Alert

Facebook Users Targeted By Fake Virus Alert

Mike Sachoff
Staff Writer
2010-01-28

PandaLabs said today it has detected the massive spread of a fake virus alert that targets Facebook users.

The company said it is another attempt by cybercriminals to infect users with fake antivirus programs.

The fake warning is being distributed by email and users are forwarding it or publishing it on Facebook walls, further spreading the hoax.

The text of the fake warning reads:

ALERT >>>>> Has your facebook been running slow lately? Go to "Settings" and select "application settings", change the dropdown box to "added to profile". If you see one in there called "un named app" delete it Its an internal spybot. Pass it on. about a minute ago.i checked and it was on mine.

PandaLabs says there is no associated link, but if users search the Internet for more information, they will come across a number of malicious websites designed to download fake antiviruses.

The fake antivirus used in the virus alert is called LivePcCare.

LED TV vs LCD TV : LCD TV Buying Guide covers LED vs LCD

LED TV vs. LCD TV

Reviewer: Phil Connor

LED TVs are technically a member of the LCD TV family. The display screen on a LED is a liquid crystal display the same as it is on any other LCD TV. The main difference between the two lies with different backlighting techniques which may change the picture quality characteristics dramatically.

Traditional LCDs have used some form of flourescent lighting from tubes to much more advanced flat arrays of lights. LED TVs use Light Emitting Diodes to light the LCD panel. Just as there are different styles of flourescent lights in traditional LCDs there are also different styles of LED backlighting. There are LED TVs like the Sony KDL-55XBR8 (see review) that have a panel of LED lights behind the LCD panel. In the Sony the LEDs are tri-colored and can be controlled in banks for an effect called "local dimming". This allows darker areas of the picture to have the backlighting dimmed behind them resulting in better contrast and black levels. In the Luxia line of Samsung LED TVs, the LED lights are surrounding the edge of the panel and this arrangement allows for the very slim depth of those models. Without the ability to do local dimming these are functionally similar to traditional LCDs so in this article we will be comparing local dimming LED TV to traditional LCD TV.

Best Free Rootkit Scanner/Remover

Best Free Rootkit Scanner/Remover

In a Hurry?
Go straight to the Quick Selection Guide
Introduction

When your computer gets a virus, that virus tries to spread, and eventually it will damage the host making it much easier to detect. A rootkit on the other hand is designed to hide certain elements such as files, processes, registry entries, or network connections, from the user and other programs thus making it very difficult to detect. This technology can be used for good as well as malicious purposes so it  is important to be familiar with your computer to avoid deleting these legitimate objects. Within Windows rootkits are used to hide malware so that their execution goes unnoticed by your security applications. So imagine that a rootkit has been installed on your computer and that its purpose is to hide a virus, thus giving the malware time to complete its goal, steal your data, and damage your system all the while going undetected. Unfortunately, rootkits are extremely effective at this, which means that even though you may believe your PC to be totally clean, some of you could be infected right now.

Most of the anti-virus vendors have integrated anti-rootkit technology into their more recent products. However, this is not a fool proof solution against rootkits because just as the AV companies improve their products detection abilities, so the malware creators find new ways to avoid detection. So as security conscious users we must rely on third party tools to help us, and there are several free applications which specialize in the detection and removal of rootkits. Keep in mind that none of these products will detect every single problem, so it is always a good idea to keep more than one of them to hand.

Screenpresso is the zen master of screenshot apps

Screenpresso is the zen master of screenshot apps

When it comes to screenshot applications, I am not easy to please. As a technical writer, screenshots are my bread and butter. I've used SnagIt, ZScreen, and even the Windows 7 Snipping Tool. Yet nothing comes close to the convenience of Screenpresso.

Screenpresso is tiny. I have no idea what it's written in -- maybe some newfangled .NET thing, but it sure doesn't feel like the standard fare Windows application. The UI is all custom-looking and the app feels very lightweight.
